Buh Bye Eddie

Is anyone surprised that Eddie George is no longer a Titan? No? Didn’t think so.

As I said before, this is Eddie’s chance to get out of the NFL with some dignity. This is his “year too early”. But that isn’t going to happen. What might happen – at least if there is any Reason in the universe?

Lakers’ reign of terror over

5 years, 4 Finals appearances, 3 rings–the Lakers are living a dream. But with every great dream there is a painful shot of reality. And the Lakers received their vaccination after their disappointing loss to the Pistons in the NBA Finals.

One head coach and one childish 300 lb. superstar later the Los Angeles Lakers are left with a disgruntled rising star on trial for rape and the Los Angeles fan base breathing down their necks. The Lakers for the past 5 years have been the team to beat in the NBA, but now that two of their key components have fled the coop, what is left for the Lakers to cling to?

I’ll analyze the trades, departures, and divorces made by the Lakers this off-season and what it means to the teams involved.

Texas Hold ‘Em: The Real World

On Tuesday I ventured down to the Wonder of It All, Foxwoods Resort Casino in lovely southeastern Connecticut.  (I pledge that that is the last time I will ever use the words “lovely” and “Connecticut” in the same sentence.)  As a former high school teacher and future graduate student, you can imagine I have a lot of time on my hands this summer.  And, as I so aptly rationalized, what better way to spend said free time than in a smoky, tacky, leech-filled poker room 70 miles away?

Even with Shaq- there’s still not enough Heat in Miami

By Jeff Bartl

It is about time that I set the record straight and bring the remaining 16 NBA die-hards back to earth about the Shaquille O’Neal-to-Miami trade.

Bloom Getting Nipped in the Bud

If you’ve read any of my earlier work, you may have surmised that I am rather displeased with several recent actions of the NCAA as it concerns college football. This is completely true. My latest regularly scheduled rant is on the ruling of the NCAA that Jeremy Bloom, a Colorado wide receiver and world-champion skier, cannot collect endorsement money, thus forcing him to choose between football and skiing. Here we go…

My Super Bowl Catharsis

I feel for the fans of the Carolina Panthers.  They watched their team lose on the greatest stage in all of sports.  Hopefully they can cope with their teams loss much better than I have.  I am still coming to grips with my Oakland Raiders losing Super Bowl XXXVII.  Maybe putting my experience on paper will help me finally overcome my grief…maybe not.  What follows is my personal reflection on losing the big game.

Nate’s Preseason Top 25

It may be extremely early but it is important to take an early look at the top 30 college basketball teams for this upcoming season.

And trust me, the number one team is not going to be Duke.

Miami’s New King Arrives

The Miami Heat’s salvation arrived today in the form of the seven foot funny man known as Shaquille O’Neal.  Shaq joked his way through the media session, but also made his mission clear.  Bring a title to South Beach.  Everyone seems to have won with the MDE (Most Dominant Ever) moving to Miami.  Well besides the team clad in purple and gold that is.

A Tale of Two Seasons

A 20-win run one August/September. Four consecutive playoff appearances. Cory Lidle. Ted Lilly. Scott Hatteberg. The Oakland Athletics have, for the last few years at least, been a team of the Second Half. A Post-All-Star Break juggernaut. Guys who would spend the spring and early summer months hitting .240 or tossing 4.50 and an even record will go on batting tears or start tossing sub-3 ball while winning decision after decision. Every year there’s someone on the A’s squad that destroys the expectations on them and lifts the team into the playoffs. And this year?

This year there’s Rich Harden.

Longball not a solution for Cubs

Homeruns are great. Whack, crack, boom, pow. They’re big. The Cubs are good at doing so with 117 of them, second most in the National League. Great.

With a few exceptions, nobody tries to hit more homeruns than Sammy Sosa. He is the master of putting balls on Waveland Avenue, which would explain why fans love him. He’s so powerful that not only can he hit homers to the opposite field, but he once missed 30 games because a sneeze caused severe muscle strains in his back.
