A Sports Medley

by Trevor Freeman

Once again I was the guy wandering the nightclub looking around for stray “tail”.  Following “Poor Man’s PTI”, I sat down and tried to compose an article on a variety of topics.  First paragraphs were easy on Big Ben, J.J., D-Wade, and the NBA Draft.  However, I ran into a brick wall every time I tried to add some meat to the story.  Yes, writer’s block was affecting me and there was only one way to snap out of it.  Without further ado……..here are ten thoughts on the world of Sports.

Reds Soaring to the Top

Recent events in Cincinnati have brought back life into a once subjugated Reds baseball team.  Dare I say, the Reds are winning – and, no, it isn’t the beginning of the season.  The past couple of weeks, everything has gone right for the Reds, even the injury to St. Louis Cardinals phenom Albert Pujols.  Below you will find everything that has gone right for the Reds at this point of the season.

My Worst Nightmares

This is what I was afraid of.

Even before the teams for the NBA Finals had been decided, I could see Miami working past the teams in the East. It was no big deal because in my eyes, Detroit should have been beat by last year’s Heat team.

The worries came when I saw Dallas unearth the San Antonio Spurs.

As much as I like watching the Mavs, I was scared of what they could do to the Heat.

The only problem is, I had no idea…

U.S. Enters World Cup With High Expectations

By: Adam Bielamowicz

In 1990 when the United States qualified for the World Cup for the first time in forty years, they were just happy to be there.  So was the case in 1994 and 1998 as well.  In three World Cups in the 1990s the Americans went 1-8-1 in ten matches.

Fantasy Football Preview – Quarterbacks

Fantasy football is just around the corner and the hundreds of thousands of people who play every year can smell it.  For everyone, this is going to be the year.  This year, you’re going to take the trophy back from Bill in accounting.  However, in order for these early title dreams to come true in January, you need to be prepared.  If you aren’t ready for curveballs, you may find yourself calling out “Chad Pennington!” with your first pick amongst the confusion.

There are so many areas you need to be prepared for, but none is more important than quarterback.  Many experts may say that running backs are more important, but in most leagues, it’s the quarterback that typically scores the most points in a given week.  Also, in most leagues, you only use one quarterback, whereas you use two running backs.  This gives you two chances for success in the back field, but only one shot at a good signal caller.  Hopefully, a little categorization of the ample amount of quarterbacks in the field will help ease some pain come draft day.

Our Bloody Sunday by Matt Waters

Imagine for a moment, the monumental ramifications of such a vile announcement, such a heinous proclamation, the utter outrage, the swell of revolted humanity, imagine it all, if Barry Bonds were to be sued by a young woman for the purposeful infection of a sexually transmitted disease.

Rule Number 76: Play Like a Warrior!

Tell them it wasn’t easy.
When they look back on their 16 wins, tell them we never took a single one for granted.
Teach them about our passion and our patience.
If they ask who was our star, give them 20 names.
If you forget our names, just tell them we were Warriors.
And in the season of our lives, we became a team.
A team that made people believe that baseball could be magic.
And men could be perfect.

MLB Power Rankings for June 9th 2006

This week’s focus is on the injuries across the league. Pujols injury proves he’s human. In New York, Sheffield joins his buddy Godzilla on the DL, while out in California both Gagne and Harden return, only to get cold feet and jump right back to being injured. And finally, after months and months of suspense and waiting… Rocco Baldelli has finally returned, just in time for the Devil Rays’ playoff push.

The clueless soccer fan’s guide to watching the World Cup

Remember comedian Jay Mohr’s talk show on ESPN back in 2002? Of course you don’t. It lasted only 16 seconds, but that was long enough for him to get in the one line that pretty much captured how the good ol’ U.S of A. has felt about the rest of the world’s favorite quadrennial sporting event:

“So, I hear the World Cup started this week. In a related story, my stones itch.”

It’s not enough that we simply ignore the beautiful game, we go out of our way to abhor it, to knock it, to dis it every chance we get. Not only do we dislike the sport, but we’re pretty damn proud of it.
