Preseason Top 25

by Trevor Freeman

Drinking beer………tossing the football around………grilling up cheeseburgers….going to places named “The Big House” and “Death Valley”…..  Can you smell it?  College football season is about to kickoff.  This year should provide the most wide open national title race in a long time as there is no one team that stands out as being dominant.  Moreso than any other year, you have to evaluate each team’s schedule in making a futures bet…….I mean evaluating the national title contenders.  After painstaking research by myself and my staff, we have dissected the teams and put together our preseason top 25 which is as follows:

NFC North Breakdown

Ah, the NFC Norris division.  Often made fun of last year because of their lack of any skill, this is a division that could be on the upswing.  The Bears have the best defense in football and could even make a playoff push, while the Vikings and Lions could be simply a year or two away from the playoffs.  Learn a little more about the teams in our sixth divisional preview…

MLB Power Rankings for August 10th- 2006

The first football game of the season has been played, which means less and less people are paying attention to baseball. However, the playoff races are still tight. The Dodgers remain a complete enigma, always seeming to be somewhere in the middle of either a winning or losing streak. The A’s have gotten hot and they appear to be on the verge of playing .800 ball for the rest of the season. And the Red Sox have relinquished their lead in the AL East, and the Yankees don’t appear ready to give it back up.

For the news on the rest of the league, keep on reading.

Mr. Paul’s Escape

The sun is about to set on the NFL commissioner’s reign.

For the National Football League, an era is quickly ending. And for the commissioner, Paul Tagliabue, retirement can’t come soon enough. While he managed to avoid any strikes over 18 seasons (or do they prefer ‘work stoppage’), there were still plenty of lawsuits, subpoenas and various other legal headaches to keep even the biggest law firms busy.

A Midsummer’s Day Dream

It’s amazing how few articles there are worth writing anymore.

I’ve spent the last two hours blazing through sports sections, checking out college websites, doing obscure Google searches, but I’ve found nothing.

English Premier League 2006-07

It is time for a football preview! Ok, so the American version doesn’t come for another 2 weeks or so, but this is the European version. As I vowed after the World Cup, my columns will continue to cover soccer. This is the first article covering the English Premier League.

Offseason Report Card: Dallas Mavericks

Close but no cigar is a very good description of the Dallas Mavericks’ season. After taking a dominant 2-0 lead against the Miami Heat, the Mavericks faltered losing 2-4 in a complete team collapse. Though they can blame the refs, the team ultimately has to blame themselves for playing scared in the waning moments of the final four games. Josh Howard and Devin Harris lost their nerves in critical moments that contributed to crucial losses.

Marc Cuban is no stranger to the offseason. In the last five years, many big names, such as Antawn Jamison, Antoine Walker, Nick Van Exel, and Steve Nash, offered their services at some point in their careers. Cuban’s array of moves is probably the sole reason the team has always be a very successful team and naturally a shoo-in for the playoffs. Cuban continues the trend as he has been very adamant in acquiring playoff savvy and experienced veterans to instill the degree of poise necessary to battle pressure and finish games.

NFC East Breakdown

After a two-week hiatus, we’re back to bring you the best football knowledge money can buy.  What better way to get you back into the swing of things than with the best division in football, the NFC East?  Some guys have come (Vanderjagt, Randle El, Archuleta), some guys have gone (La’Roi Glover, Keyshawn, Ramsey) and some guys just can’t get enough of the East (T.O., LaVar Arrington).  While we aren’t sure how these changes will pan out in the long run, we do know one thing: it’s gonna be fun to watch.
