The baseball season is up and coming, and the power rankings for the 2006-2007 are here. Take a sneak peak of the new baseball rankings as we head into the new season. Where will your team end up?
Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn, locks for the Hall of Fame, were officially announced as the only elected nominees for this year. This generation of players is the one that brought baseball back from the disastrous strike. While Ripken and Gwynn may be viewed as perfect citizens, Mark McGwire did more to bring the sport back than anybody else on the planet, and his record is just as clean.
Reviewing the AP Top 25
Now that the NCAA football season is over, it’s time to take a final look at the AP “top 25” teams in the country. “Top 25” is in quotes because one must remember that this poll is a popularity contest and nothing more. Forget preseason rankings, and even rankings up to this point. We’ll examine each top team individually to see if their ranking is justified.
The Hall’s Blunder
The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown is the biggest disgrace to the game.
Never, not even in refusing to induct Pete Rose, has the Hall proven to be as flawed as it did today.
Casting My Ballot
Let’s just say, for sake of argument, that the Baseball Writers Association of America ignored the fact that I am not actually a member of the BBWAA, although I pretend to be. And let’s just say, for sake of argument, that the BBWAA were willing to overlook the 10-year rule, in order for a member to become eligible to cast a ballot for the Hall of Fame voting.
I don’t know why they would bend these cornerstone rules for me, of all people, but let’s just say they did.
Then consider this my official ballot.

There is question in Boston Bruins fans’ minds right now, “Have the Bruins recovered from their New Years hangovers?” They have lost their first 2 games since the New Year began, both against the Toronto Maples Leafs, and lost the second game against the Leafs 10-2. It seems like the only thing coach Dave Lewis has done right in the past 2 games was not letting the Bruins players talk to the press after the horrid 10-2 loss. In this article, I will break down what the Bruins have to do to make 2007 a successful year.
NHL Power Rankings for Jan 8 2007
The top of the power rankings has seen the same four teams almost every week this season. Meanwhile, Martin Broudeur has become a one-man team in New Jersey willing the Devils near the top five for the first time this season. The Canucks find themselves in the top ten for the first time all season, while the Hurricanes have slipped a little, sending them down to thirteen this week.
Meanwhile, the middle of the pack sees all but the aforementioned Canucks in the northwest division. The Islanders had a tough week, as they proved their quick start is just a fluke. Phoenix has found their highest point of the season, just as “The Great One’s” fire sale begins. Where did your team end up?
Mention Notre Dame football, and a few things come to mind. You either love them or hate them. They do not belong to a conference. They aren’t the team they used to be. The Irish have been through Bob Davie and Ty Willingham without the great success the Irish was once familiar with. In 2005, in walks the “offensive guru”, the man with five Super Bowl rings. Charlie Weis takes over the football program in South Bend. OK, now Notre Dame is headed for the national title within the first three to five years. Some publications thought he would have the Irish in the big game in his second year. Two completed seasons down. What has Weis done with the golden domers?
You’re On Your Own
In this day and age, being a head coach for a major college program, or professional team can be demanding. And as most coaches eventually find out, lonely. Now since it is in season, this article highlights NCAA football, and the NFL. But just like football, it can hold true in basketball, and baseball as well.
So, Nick Saban’s at Alabama. People might call him a liar, a cheater, and everything else under the sun. I’m not going to rip on him, because his college coaching record, at 48-16, isn’t bad at all. He’s also won a National Championship in the toughest conference in the country, but now he’s going to a program still suffering from crippling NCAA recruiting sanctions only recently back to full strength.
So what can Saban can do to improve a program that’s doing its best to make Bear Bryant a distant memory?
