Double Digit Losses Again- What Should The Lions Do?

The Detroit Lions finished 5-11 this year. They are 21-59 over the past 5 seasons. They have four offensive players who were drafted in the top ten of the first round who have produced little or nothing. They have a clueless owner, and an in-over-his-head general manager. They don’t have a permanent head coach, and will soon be without a starting or backup quarterback.

Although it would seem that their options are limitless, the truth is the Lions have but one or two choices to make to solidify the direction, or misdirection, of the franchise for the next 5 seasons.

Leap of Faith by Matt Waters

Matthew 20:16 — "So, the last will be first, and the first will be last"

Because the colors.

The years blur together. Speed past one of many haunted avenues. Fullback Leon Johnson has a decision to make. While galloping along the rock hard turf surfacing Detroit’s Super Dome, he can either break forward past a line of scrimmage for the temporary salvation of a broken play, or he can pass, play the hero of circumstance, and prove one of Bill Parcells’ worst game deciding hunches correct. A berth in the playoffs is in the balance. A season after finishing 1-15, the New York Jets, official punch line for the A.F.C., are a single decision away from a previously unthinkable wild card invitation to the Post Season. The clock is ticking. Lion defenders, also fighting with vigor for their Playoff lives, viciously close in on Johnson. A touchdown pass would have won it.

An interception lost it.

The Jets go home.

Week 17 NFL Picks Jan 1 2006

Last week was a tough week and this week doesn’t look to be any easier. Who knows how well the second stringers of teams who have already clinched playoff seeding will come out and play against the dregs of the league. Colts? Seahawks? Bears? They’re just looking to rest their starters. Then there’s the dreaded scoreboard watching that could quickly deflate a team. Bettor beware. But, here we go with the week 17 picks.

Note that there is no podcast this week but we’ll be back next week with our playoff predictions podcast.

Fix Vick- Quick

Michael Vick is a quarterback that possesses a combination of skills that is extremely rare. He can run with the best, he completes passes few others can make, and his arm strength is almost incomparable. And, even though his completion percentage leaves much to be desired, it doesn’t reflect his decision making. In his 3 full years as a starter, the most interceptions he’s thrown in a season are 12. I always say the most difficult aspect of the game for young quarterbacks is learning to not turn the ball over. Making plays will come, just cut down on the interceptions. Vick’s done that, so what’s the problem?

NFL Power Rankings Week 16 – December 27 2005

Only 3 NFC teams make the top 10 this week. The conference is there for the Seahawks to lose. And the AFC is tightening up with the sudden rise of the Patriots and the inconsistent play of the Bengals. Here are the week 17 Power Rankings.

Bidding for Bush

By Alex Fitzsimmons, email [email protected]

It doesn’t have playoff implications. It’s not Marino vs. Montana. In fact, this game is about as meaningful as the NHL. But it’s the game I’ll be watching Week 17.

If Brett Favre Doesn’t Retire…

Will Brett Favre retire? Should Brett Favre retire? Are the team and management letting Brett Favre down? Is Brett Favre letting them down? Who hasn’t asked these questions about the most beloved player, by media and fans, in football today? For weeks now, questions about Favre’s future have been as persistent as any other subject, including the Colts run towards perfection.

Most football analysts claim that Favre, at age 36, still has plenty of gas left in the tank. According to the analysts, the Packers are 3-11 because Favre has a weak supporting cast. They say he has no running game, a porous offensive line, and no playmaking receiver. To them, Favre’s play is never the culprit when the team fails to perform adequately. However, any astute analysis will show that it’s Favre who hasn’t performed adequately – for years.

NFL Week 16 Picks – December 25 2005

Is there any better early Christmas present than a whole slate of football games on Christmas Eve? What a great schedule.

Last week was a good week as most of us went 13-3 and only Trevor went 10-6. We’re looking to repeat that strong performance this week. Here we go with the Week 16 NFL picks.

NFL Power Rankings Week 15 – December 20 2005

There’s one thing the Colts and Texans have in common, they’re both consistent. The Colts have been riding the top spot since week 2 and the Texans have been in the cellar since week 5. One loss and one win shouldn’t change this.

I know it’s Christmas week but I couldn’t resist a couple of shots at Michael Vick. Perhaps it’s just my way of countering the slobbering by Joe Theisman on Sunday night.

Colts- media have to get back on the horse

By Sean Quinn

The San Diego Chargers, not the New England Patriots, not Tom Brady, not the apparent next Messiah Tedy Bruschi, handed the Indianapolis Colts their first loss of the season Sunday.  The Colts showed imperfections in their offense and severe blemishes in their secondary that would be difficult for Proactiv Solution to even attempt to clean up in time for the playoffs.  The Colts, though, are still the frontrunners for the Super Bowl title and should be afraid of the dark before they are frightened by the New England Patriots.
