MAY DAY

The Yankees are a mess.

This news, of course, is about as breaking as Britney’s bun in the oven. But what IS stop-the-presses noteworthy is that the fans- who have thusfar been desperately clinging to a battle cry of “The season’s young!”- are beginning to slowly and listlessly accept this immobilizing truth. That our team, our revered immortal pinstripes, the apple of the eye of the Big Apple, the essence of my being and the blood running through my veins…is a mess.

Half and Half

If Kevin Millar were looking for a product sponsorship deal, maybe he should look to a local dairy company like Garelick Farms to be the pitchman for their Half and Half or eBay company, half.com. Nobody knows more than Millar about how valuable a half can be.

The Green Monster Strikes Back

Without any apparent provocation, another sequal to a movie over ten years old has been made.  But what does this have to do with one of America’s most beloved stories of 2004?  Plus, more “Star Wars” references than people who liked “Attack of the Clones”

Worst Case Scenario

When you plan for every contingency, you always need to consider the worst case scenario. If that worst case scenario comes to fruition, things aren’t going to look pretty even with your best contingency in action.

Welcome to the 2005 Boston Red Sox rotation.

When Theo Epstein planned out his “post Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez” starting rotation, he knew his options were limited. With a limited free agent pool that saw the two pitchers leaving town at the top of the free agent list and the artful dealer Billy Beane holding three pocket aces in Oakland looking for young major league ready pitching prospects in return, Theo set out to fill out a rotation that would work out over the course of 162 games.

The smell of peanuts and Cracker-Jack, the roar of the crowd, the crack of the bat, and the smell of the grass.  Attention all of you in the District of Columbia area; these images are for you.  But for how long?

Depths of a Season – Matt Waters

” The river has many depths…. Let it wash over you.”

An insightful tagline from a great movie [Mystic River] actually holds some credence for baseball fans nation wide. For if you substitute the word “season” in place of river in this particular quote, one gets a perfect summation for what is the grind of a 162 game marathon. Baseball needs to be watched as it is played, with a cool head and balanced intensity. In other more precise words, baseball can’t be viewed in a football frame of mind. After one game in the NFL season, a fan could get a decent idea about where his team is heading. After one game in the Major League epic, a fan could get a decent idea about well…. Absolutely nothing.

The Yankees suck: And this year- they do….

“Yankees suck!” is a popular chant around Major League Baseball stadiums for years. And for 1996-2004, you’d probably be able to argue. But in 2005, your writer, a true, die-hard Yankee fan, would be inclined to agree…..

A Plea for a Breather

My boss is in the process of buying a new apartment, so he says to me, “A study once reported, the 3 most stressful things to do in life are switch jobs, move, or get a divorce.” (Yeah, I think this is just how people in the pharmaceutical business talk. No claim can be made without a clinical trial to support it, I guess.) Then he goes on, “But I’m thinking for you the most stressful things involve a player getting traded, away games, and the playoffs.”

He’s not too far from the truth. As if the trials and tribulations of post-college life weren’t taxing enough, baseball is officially making my head spin.
