A Little Reunion in L.A.

There is a reunion in Los Angeles and the Dodgers are quietly forming into a contender. After hiring former Red Sox manager Grady Little to fill their skipper role and replace Jim Tracy, the Los Angeles Dodgers already looked better on paper.

Little, with a record of 188-136 in two seasons with the Red Sox, is a players’ manager, a guy that keeps things on course and consistently rights a bobbing ship. Upon arrival in Los Angeles, Grady Little saw the reasons the Dodgers struggled so much last year: injuries and lack of experience.

C’est La `D’!

By: Jon Morrill

In the past two weeks, the Chicago Cubs have acquired two speedy defensive stalwarts with French-sounding names in Juan Pierre and Jacque Jones to help battle Le White Sox, Le Cardinals, Le Wind, Le Ivy, and Le Curse of Le Goat. Of course, both Jones and Pierre are American as apple pie and… well, French fries; with Jacque Jones being a native San Diegan and Juan Pierre from Alabama. But it’s a still fun angle to play.

What’s In A Closer?

Indeed the hot stove of Major League Baseball is piping hot with signings, arbitration and trades galore.  We see teams overpaying for players usually considered above average, but nothing great.  Teams create havoc for their budget in the future when they sign 27-year-olds to five-year deals that never work out.  Ah, the smell of free agency in the off-season.

Damon Signing No Blow to Sox Fans

By Ryan McGowan

My warmest regards for the holidays to all SportsColumn readers.  After a long hiatus, BostonMac has emerged from his cocoon of semi-retirement to comment on the Yankees’ signing of Johnny Damon.

The Empire Strikes at the Heart of Boston

The holidays are here and everyone is eager to go out and buy their loved ones gifts that they will enjoy.  People go out to the malls in both Boston and New York looking to get the baseball fan in the family a nice new jersey.  In New York hot sellers are a nice Derek Jeter jersey or maybe an Alex Rodriguez one.  For people in Boston they probably go out and buy a nice David Ortiz jersey or Johnny Damon one.  Oh wait! This just in, the Johnny Damon jersey’s are coming off the shelves today, and new ones are being put up on New York shelves.  Why do you ask? Well the New York Yankees are proud to offer their beloved fans a new gift idea, a new blue and white pinstripe Johnny Damon jersey!

Two Heads are Really Better than One?

Ben Cherington and Jed Hoyer, Co-GM’s of the Boston Red Sox, have fans along Yawkey Way wondering why they woke this morning to find that the Grinch(es) had stolen Christmas.  By allowing the Yankees to swipe Johnny Damon out from negotiations once controlled by Boston, these GM’s have crippled the team for 2006 leaving fans confused as to the direction this team is taking for the near future.

After dealing prospects for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell and adding, through another trade, a 34 year-old second baseman (Mark Loretta), it seemed that the Red Sox were bolstering their team for immediate impact in 2006.  Then management dealt Edgar Renteria to Atlanta for top prospect Andy Marte.  Though Renteria never got comfortable in Boston, this move weakens the team for the next few years.  Because of the money sent to Atlanta in the deal, the Red Sox are effectively paying Marte $4 million a year as a back-up plan if Mike Lowell further declines.  Finally, by remaining firm on their original 4 years for $40 million they allowed the Yankees to hang around in the Johnny Damon bidding long enough to lure him away for an extra $12 million, the Red Sox, barring a holiday miracle, have taken a big stride backwards from contention in 2006.

The Lukewarm Stove

    Manny Ramirez?  Still in Boston.

Johnny Damon?  Still a free agent, waiting for the right offer.

Nomar Garciaparra?  Agreed to a one-year deal in L.A., while Rafael Furcal signed the contract Nomar once appeared destined to receive.

Kenji WHO?

A week ago the Seattle Mariners made their first big splash in the Free Agent Market, by signing Kenji Johjima to a 3-year deal for 16.5 million dollars. The 29 year-old Japanese catcher will become teammates with fellow country man Ichiro. Now on the outside looking in, Kenji looks like a great sign with a lot of positives. But will the Mariners risk in signing him end up flopping? Let’s take a closer look.

Controversy-Rod

By: Jon Morrill

The Gajillion dollar contract. The fight with Varitek. The Ball Slap. Not being a “true” Yankee. His Image. The signing yet not really with Boston, then ending up in New York. The A-Rod Curse. Controversy and brouhaha has seemed to follow Alex Rodriguez around the past 5 years like stink on a dog.

So… You’re Still A Dodger Fan

By Jon Morrill

Dear Dodger Fans,

Rejoice! Your ball club, led by newly appointed GM Ned Coletti, has taken two big steps towards getting back in the ring for the rematch against your cross-town brethren, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, whom you once had stuck in a headlock for so, so long. Not only have your beloved boys in blue signed one of the most underrated free agents on the market this off-season (how A.J. Burnett all of a sudden became the savior of baseball is beyond me) in 2003 AL Batting Champ 3B Bill Mueller; but you also picked up the first real leadoff threat to come to DodgerTown since Brett Butler in SS Rafael Furcal. So not only have you added some real pop to your lineup with the switch hitting antics of Mueller and the dynamic Furcal, but you’ve also upgraded the left side of your infield considerably. Add that to the fact that once Cesar Izturis comes back from Tommy John elbow surgery after the All-Star Break, he’ll probably take over at second base, shuffling Jeff Kent over to first; you’ll have 4 All-Star caliber players patrolling your infield. In addition to all of that going on, the Dodgers are also said to be in the running for landing Nomar Garciaparra, who apparently now can play any position on the baseball diamond–any position but shortstop.
