The gates are open and the final run is on. It’s going to be a close race, a photo finish, right down to the wire, but however it turns out, the Yankees won’t even be close.

Take your pick: Chad or Vick
Two playoff contending teams, two young quarterbacks, two legacies to prove. Chad Pennington and Mike Vick are a duo of fiery youngsters with unlimited potential and boundless jubilance. Both men started their careers illustriously as Pennington led the Jets past the first round of the playoffs in 2002, and Vick revolutionized the definition of a playmaker, while earning his spot as the poster boy for the Madden cover.
Both quarterbacks also suffered the horrific fate that all rookie stars dread, injury. Having fully recovered from injuries that had them sidelined for most of last season, these young superstars are out to show the world they belong in football.
Two vastly different players with the same goal in mind, to win. The only question now: whom would you take, Pennington or Vick?
Alex’s preseason NFL rankings
The climactic finale to the 2004 Super Bowl marked the start of a whirlwind of controversy, bruised egos, loud-mouthed superstars, and dope smoking running backs that made this off-season one to remember.
I’ll briefly analyze and rank all the divisions in the NFL, all the best players in the NFL, and tell you who I think will win it all in 2005.
Early NFC nod: Seahawks or Eagles
The NFC has improved dramatically during the 2004 off-season thus far. A conference loaded with premiere coaches, especially in the East, has propelled the NFC to the top of the football world. Two teams in particular have raised the bar of excellence and will battle it out for the coveted bid to the 2005 Super Bowl.
These two teams are the Seattle Seahawks, and the Philadelphia Eagles. Seattle was a first round exit last year losing in overtime to the Green Bay Packers. Philly came so close but for the third straight year, couldn’t quite get over the hump in the NFC. Both teams will be seeking a vengeance and you can bet they’ll be ready for round two.
Ricky finds his euphoria
So, Ricky, are you happy now? You had one hell of a career, a great city to play for, and millions of adoring fans screaming your name. And now you have nothing. You left behind your great career, your great city, and your great fans all for some addictive and deadly grass you dope heads smoke because you have nothing better to do with your lives. Go ahead Ricky, smoke your weed, connect with your true self, and leave everything behind that you worked so hard to achieve. Just don’t come crying back to us when you realize that your misconceived sense of euphoria has left you because you ran out of dope to burn.
Yankees will flop in October
Winning a World Championship in baseball requires an incredible amount of focus, determination, courage, and heart. The New York Yankees are what baseball is all about. They represent the integrity of the game and have an uncanny desire to win. This year’s Yankee club is no different. They have the determination, the willpower to succeed, and the Yankee legacy on their side. One important component the Yankees lack is pitching. The Yanks have always possessed the intangibles, but this year they are missing that very important piece of the puzzle. In order to succeed in Major League Baseball every team must rely on starting pitching to help grind out the playoff games in October. The legacy of Mantle and Ruth can’t help NY now, but Clemens could’ve.
Lakers’ reign of terror over
5 years, 4 Finals appearances, 3 rings–the Lakers are living a dream. But with every great dream there is a painful shot of reality. And the Lakers received their vaccination after their disappointing loss to the Pistons in the NBA Finals.
One head coach and one childish 300 lb. superstar later the Los Angeles Lakers are left with a disgruntled rising star on trial for rape and the Los Angeles fan base breathing down their necks. The Lakers for the past 5 years have been the team to beat in the NBA, but now that two of their key components have fled the coop, what is left for the Lakers to cling to?
I’ll analyze the trades, departures, and divorces made by the Lakers this off-season and what it means to the teams involved.
The baseball off-season is a time for rebuilding, revitalizing, and reenergizing your ball club. By the end of the first half of play in baseball most clubs have an idea of where their teams’ are headed. The 2004 baseball season has been anything but anticlimactic consisting of comeback stories, rising superstars, battles through injury, and underachieving, overpaid loudmouths. Some clubs have performed much to the expectation of critics, and others have not performed as expected. I’ll examine which off-season deals were helpful and which were devastating to the clubs during the first half of play.
Ah, summer time rolls around again and the 2004 baseball All-Star game from Minute Maid Park has concluded. Another year of the greatest accumulation of players who have put up fantastic numbers in the first half of the season. You got I-Rod catching; he leads the majors in average. You got the Hall of Fame outfield for the NL (until Griffey got injured), Clemens making the start for the NL team, and good old Jason Giambi making the start at first for the AL. All is well, or is it?
An ode to Griffey
A player seemingly blessed with unlimited potential has struggled and persevered through his entire career. Battling the injury bug he climbed his way to the top list of baseball’s elite smacking his 500th home run of his lustrous career with the Cincinnati Reds. A journey through pain, suffering, losing, and winning has brought him this far, and he thought it was finally over. Not yet.
