Week 6 2008 NFL Picks and Podcast

Week 5 of the NFL season was pretty rough.  Ryan continues to lead both the picks straight up and against the spread while RJ continue his streak of anti-locks.  We’re eagerly awaiting this week’s lock so we can bet against it.  He’s nothing if not consistent.  The featured games this week are Ravens @ Colts, Jaguars @ Broncos, Cowboys @ Cardinals, and Giants @ Browns,  which we pick against the spread.  Good luck in your office pools.

Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. The person with the most money at the end of the year in Locks betting takes home all the money. Disclaimer: The amounts discussed are for illustrative and entertainment purposes only. Vegas Vinny: Despite being in last place in the NFC South, the Saints aren’t a terrible team. They do manage to have the #1 passing offense in the league and can put up some points on people (27.6 ppg to be exact). The Raiders are the exact opposite. They can barely pass the ball but they have a #3 ranked rushing offense. Both defenses give up roughly the same amount of points per game. The difference is that the Raiders can’t keep up with the Saints offense, especially in the Superdome.

As a second factor, you probably know that Al Davis fired Kiffin before their bye week. Now, sometimes a team will respond to a firing by performing really well for their new head coach, especially when it’s a shake up and they hated their old coach. The word out of Oaktown is that they players liked Kiffin and think Al Davis has lost his marble. (Well, they already suspected the latter when he threw all that guaranteed money at Javon Walker.) In any case, the Raiders are already looking for a tee time and have no motivation to fly across the country and compete. Saints should blow them out. $110 on the Saints (-7) to win $100. (Balance= $935)

BostonMac: As Trevor would say, the Atlanta Falcons are “frisky.” Whoda thunk it? The Falcons are coming off a nice win on the road against Green Bay, and their offense is putting up some big numbers with both Matt Ryan and Michael Turner becoming solid fantasy starters at their respective positions. I agree with what Vin said on the podcast: Kyle Orton might be playing well, but I can’t see this going on for much longer. I think the Bears score some points but the Falcons end up on top and go to a surprising 4-2. I’ll put $55 to win $50 on ATLANTA (+3) getting the points, and to win at home.

(Balance = $1050)

Trevor F: I love home dogs and when I see a team like Atlanta getting 3 points at
home, I jump in. This Falcon team is gaining confidence as Michael Turner
and Roddy White have been looking great to start the season. Matt Ryan is
quietly turning in a very effective rookie season as well. Take the
points and the ATL to not only cover but win this game. I’ll put $55 on the Falcons (+3) to
win $50. (Balance = $1205)

RJ: I know this sounds Bill Simmons-y, but I’m the proud founder of the Bobby Shaw Hall Of Fame. Bobby Shaw is a former NFL receiver who spent six years with the Steelers, Jags, Bills and Chargers. In one game late in 1999, the 4-8 Steelers were trailing the Chiefs 35-13 late in the fourth quarter, when Mike Tomczak found Shaw in the endzone with 30 seconds left. So happy was Shaw with his accomplishment that he made it a point to tear off his jersey and shoulder pads to reveal a Superman shirt underneath. So, the main criteria to enter this sacred club is to celebrate yourself so ridiculously for doing something completely meaningless. Not only am I the founder, I’m also a member. I haven’t picked a goddam game right this year, but as soon as I do, I’m going to pound my chest so hard it’ll be louder than my dog barking on the podcast. I think I got it this week with the Jets (-5.5) at home against the Bengals. Carson Palmer isn’t playing, Brett Favre is, the Bengals can’t stop anybody. Get ready for the hubris, bitches! $110.

Postscript: Shaw dropped the two-point conversion pass. (Balance = $615)
