I Can’t Buy a Jet Jersey

Laverneus Coles is back, back from the dead that is the Washington Redskins. While I am happy to have LC back, I am definitely a little upset to see Santana Moss go. The guy has been nothing but a first class guy in the locker room and when healthy, a spark to an offense that sometimes in Herman Edwards terms is, “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Although Moss was hampered by a hamstring injury he provided two of the biggest plays of the Jets’ postseason. Against the Chargers he caught the 47 yard touchdown pass from Pennington, and against the Steelers Moss returned a punt for a touchdown that would have been the spark to lead the Jets to the AFC championship if the Jets didn’t blow it. Moss has provided many sparks just like the one’s previously mentioned and he will definitely be missed. I will miss Moss and I will enjoy seeing Coles back in a Jet uniform, the real thing that upsets me about this trade is that I have a Santana Moss jersey that is now useless. Last summer I asked for a Santana Moss jersey for my birthday present. You have to love his electricity and the way he can turn around a game with one simple 76 yard punt return for a touchdown. I could have asked for a Pennington, Martin, or Chrebet jersey but every Jet fan in Giants Stadium is wearing one of those three jerseys. I don’t want to sound like I am too cool for the other 76,000 in Giants Stadium on a fall Sunday, but I am.

My first Jet jersey was a Vinny Testaverde jersey. I got it for Christmas during the 1998 season when the Jets lost in the AFC Championship. Do you remember what happened the first game of the 1999 season? That’s right, against the Patriots Vinny ruptured his achilles and the Jets season was over in the first game. I remember being in my dorm room with a blanket over my face saying, ” They’re cursed, I’m cursed, now I know what its like to be a Boston Red Sox fan.”

After that season I decided to trade my Testaverde jersey for my fathers Keyshawn Johnson jersey. I mean, this guy loved playing for Parcells and Parcells loved him, so he isn’t going anywhere. Right? Well, I cursed yet another player. That off-season Parcells traded Johnson to the Buccaneers for 2 first round picks. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE EFFING KIDDING ME!!! Seriously, does this happen to every fan or just me? I was thrilled that the Jets had four first round picks, but what jersey was I going to wear? I didn’t want to jinx Testaverde again and now Keyshawn was gone.

Well, I decided not to get another Jet jersey until last summer.

I proudly wore my Santana Moss #83 jersey to every Jet game this year. To all the Jet fans out there, don’t blame Santana for his off year. I am solely to blame. I got the Jersey and what happened? Well, I will put it to you this way — Last year Moss tallied over 1,000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. This year, Moss had only 46 receptions for 800+ yards and only 5 touchdowns. Babe Ruth ain’t got S*&t on me!

So lets do a little recap. 1999: I get a Vinny Testaverde Jersey. Result: Vinny ruptures his achilles, Jets finish 8-8. 2000: I trade my father for his Keyshawn Johnson jersey. Result: Johnson gets traded. 2004: I get the Santana Moss jersey for my birthday. Result: Moss has a drop off from last year and gets traded. Is all this a coincidence? I think not.

Now this year I have a dilemma. Should I get a new jersey or just wear my Santana Moss jersey with the hope that I won’t jinx any of the Jets? Here is the problem with that, I believe wearing a jersey of a player that is on another team is the ultimate jinx.

Right now I am thinking of getting a Jonathan Vilma #51 jersey. I have three reasons for this. 1.) He is not going anywhere. Vilma is the future of the Jets defense and Linebacking core. 2.) For some odd reason I think I have to buy a player’s jersey who went to The “U.” Vinny, Moss, and Vilma — Coincidence? I think not. 3.) I feel like the only way you can jinx a defensive player is with injuries and I don’t think I have that kind of power. Ooops, nevermind, I forgot about Testaverde.

So here is where I am at. I think I should wear some kind of Jet apparel. Sweatshirt, headband, hat, jacket, anything that doesn’t ruin one players chances of helping the Jets to the Super Bowl. But wait, if I buy just general Jet apparel doesn’t that mean I will jinx the whole team? Damn, is there no end to this madness?

Wait, I’ve got it! Next year I will wear a Tom Brady jersey to every Jet game in the hopes that I jinx his season. That should open the door for the Jets to win the division. The length of my life in section 128 will be shortened considerably, but that’s what kind of fan I am. Maybe that will also cause Brady to break up with Bridget Moynihan, opening the door for me…Oh yes, I finally have the master plan.

nice story keep up the good work.

Hopefully we don’t have to put up with any more garbage with SportsScribe taking our progressive criticism negatively.

Look up BostonMac and his article about almost buying a Yankees hat. You’d like it.

great work Great story, really enjoyed reading it. Even though Tom Brady has destroyed the Jets in the past, as a Patriots fan, I would request that because of your jinx, please don’t buy a Brady jersey. I am begging you.

Yankee hat Thanks for the comments, I read the Yankee hat article. Good stuff, you have to love the animosity between Boston sports fans and New York Sports fans.

Uh oh, I smell my Brady jersey already Thanks for your compliments, I appreciate it.

As for me buying a Brady jersey, you should have left out that you are a Pats fan. Now, I am more motivated to buy my enemy’s jersey.  Seriously, Brady gives me nightmares. This is otherwise known as the 2 times a year when the Jets play the Pats, or the 2 years it has been since the Jets have beaten the Pats.

Thanks again!

Steve
