Juxtaposition

Intellectuals often complain about the double standard athletes are granted in society. Professional players lose their distinction as citizens, American Royalty. However, many never stop to consider the treacherous position this circumstance drops our sports stars into. An individual can become easily entrapped in celebrity, and those who maintain their character in our cutthroat culture deserve to be commended for their courage, and conviction.

Baseball’s Saddest Clown

There is a perpetual circus performing in Major League Baseball.  Every so often, between the lion tamers (Clemens, Pujols) and the trapeze artists (Ichiro, Eckstein), a clown emerges and steals the show.  This clown is very different from others in two respects: 1)his head—not his shoes—are clownish in size, and 2)he makes fans cry instead of laugh.  That’s right, its Bondzo the Clown!

You’re On Your Own

In this day and age, being a head coach for a major college program, or professional team can be demanding.  And as most coaches eventually find out, lonely.  Now since it is in season, this article highlights NCAA football, and the NFL.  But just like football, it can hold true in basketball, and baseball as well.

Video Games and Sports

It has come to my attention over the past couple of years.  Video games are starting to take the place of real sports.  These games have brought new meaning to the words, Virtual Reality.

"NBA Salary Report or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and accept the Bombs"

The NBA salary report for the 2006-2007 season was announced recently. If viewed beyond the sports realm, it can be seen as depressing social depth chart, which leaves me practially unrankable, in the moderately to below moderately compensated writer’s assistant category. At least I got a bonus this year. Last year I was Christmas downsized.

How the NFL dropped the ball.

In the NFL, there is a serious disease affecting every player and every team.  The symptoms of the disease become apparent at the worst possible times, when the game is on the line.  It affects everybody, even the game’s best.  The most terrifying thing is that no cure exists now or in the future.  This disease affects a person’s ability to catch a ball also known as, “the drop.”

Why no one cares about the NBA

No one can really debate that the NBA’s popularity has been very low since they returned from the 1999 lockout. Many speculate as to why, but one reason stands out above all others to me, and somehow is rarely mentioned in these discussions.

The NBA has absolutely NO parity.

The Writer Formerly Known As JDWC

Turkey Day: The Cowboys are destroying Tampa Bay and I’ve already made the mashed potatoes for my mom. I have two options right now as I await my Thanksgiving feast.

1. Try to converse with relatives I hardly know
2. Reminisce about recent sports news

Hmm…tough choice. So what am I thankful for on this cranberry sauce-filled holiday? Besides the monumental feast, I am thankful for the opportunity to sit here and write about whatever I want.

USC Loses game and possible chance at the national title in Corvallis

Somebody tell me, because I am really not sure, but did USC lose this weekend? Of course I am being sarcastic. I have seen headlines such as “Leave it to Beavers” (ESPN) and other witty headlines all weekend. They lost and really did anyone not see this coming? Of course losing to Oregon State nobody could have predicted, but you knew this team was going to lose a game.

Hey- We Like NFL guys!

The NFL, and football in general, still gets away with anything in the public’s forgiving eyes; but other sports, namely baseball, are held to far more scrupulous standards, especially by the media.
