MLB Power Rankings for August 31st- 2006

Another old and crafty left-hander has been shipped from a pretender to a contender, but does the three-time All-Star, two-time Cy Young candidate, one-time 20 game winner, still have anything left in the tank?

Will Ryan Howard chase after the Ruth/Maris homerun mark in his first full major league season?

Will Delmon Young’s work with the bat in his hand be enough to erase the memory of his classless act of throwing one?

And how about those Marlins? Their entire team should just be awarded one huge Rookie of the Year Award to share, but will they have enough talent to keep them close in the Wild Card race? I can guarantee that if they make it to the postseason, they’ll be the number one team nobody wants to face.

And, oh, yeah, I almost forgot, we have new top dog.

Is It Time For Baseball Rule-Changing?

by Matt Wells

There are some rules in the current game of baseball that are etched in stone.  For every homerun hit, you travel around four bases.  Four balls equals a walk, three strikes equals an out, and three outs means that the other team must come up to bat.  There are nine innings in a regular game that is not shortened by rain or lengthened by extra innings.

Other baseball rules, though not necessarily permanent, have helped shaped the game to what it is today.  A five-inning game is an official one in tomorrow’s boxscores.  A batter can run to first on a swinging third strike if there was a wild pitch or passed ball on that third strike (remember A.J. Pierzynski in last year’s playoffs?).

MLB Power Rankings for August 24th- 2006

The Detroit Tigers seem to have lost their stranglehold on the #1 slot, but keep it because they were able to win two games against the division rival White Sox. Perhaps I’m just an optimist in thinking that National League teams have as much chance at winning a World Series as American League teams, but the New York Mets still hold the #2 slot. The Yankees looked primed to make the upward jump after sweeping the Red Sox in a critical five-game series, but then go and lose two of three to the pathetic Seattle Mariners. As they say, I guess that’s why they play the games.

On a more individual note, two veterans changed teams this week: Jamie Moyer brought his 200 career wins to the City of Brotherly Love and Shawn Green takes his 300 career homeruns to the Big Apple. Two other players had significantly different outcomes with non-baseball related ailments: Tom Glavine avoided surgery on a possible blood-clot, while Chan Ho Park went under the knife, hoping to solve internal bleeding.

Ten Starting Pitchers Who Failed in the AL- but Didn’t in the NL

By Matt Barone
The American League has a designated hitter. Their lineups are stacked from top to bottom, with power hitters like David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Jason Giambi, and Jim Thome, just to name a few. It’s a lot harder to pitch in the American League. Ask these American League Failures:

MLB Power Rankings for August 17th- 2006

At this point in the season, we’re starting to separate the playoff contenders from the pretenders. The contenders are mostly the usual suspects, with the addition of the recently red-hot Dodgers, the Twins, who remain within striking distance, and the Reds, if they can maintain at least their wild card lead after an important set with the division leading Cardinals. The pretenders, on the other hand include a mix of the usual suspects and some teams that normally don’t fall into that category. The pretenders: Seattle, who has lost 17 divisional games in a row; Toronto, who continues to firesell its expendable players despite being only 6.5 games out; Atlanta, whose pitching looks worthless for the first time in 15 years; and Houston, who despite only being 6.5 games out, doesn’t look to have any ability of making a late-season run and will probably finish the year well under .500.

Diamonds Aren’t for Reading

Everyone has something they don’t like. Whether it be cancer, sewer rats, conservatives, etc. each person has something that they avoid whenever possible. Unfortunately for most Major League Baseball players, that poison of existence happens to be reading.

MLB Power Rankings for August 10th- 2006

The first football game of the season has been played, which means less and less people are paying attention to baseball. However, the playoff races are still tight. The Dodgers remain a complete enigma, always seeming to be somewhere in the middle of either a winning or losing streak. The A’s have gotten hot and they appear to be on the verge of playing .800 ball for the rest of the season. And the Red Sox have relinquished their lead in the AL East, and the Yankees don’t appear ready to give it back up.

For the news on the rest of the league, keep on reading.

The Hall of Fame Question: Pitchers

As Bruce Sutter and his 13-year wait for the Hall of Fame just proved, it’s hard to make it in to the Hall. You could even be the all-time saves leader (like Lee Smith is) and not make it to Cooperstown. While some active pitchers will be having their busts carved out in the near future, the vast majority need more work. Which pitchers will make it to the Hall? Here’s my analysis.

Unconditional Love: A Short Baseball Story

The sun sprayed vibrant beams off Monty’s shades and he smiled, tapping the bat lightly against his cleats. He briefly surveyed his surroundings, knowing that this minor lapse in concentration was well worth the view. The crowd was monumental, swaying and weaving, a summer splashed collage, all sweat and vigor, humming with anticipation.

Walk Out Music

Two weeks ago my friend and I were at the Mets game. On the way into the stadium my friend looked at me and said, “I hope that either Julio Franco is starting or pinch hits at some point in the game.”

I looked at him with the same face Matt Leinart had when Tagliabue announced the Jets selected D’Brickashaw and said, “What?”
