Week 5 2007 NFL Picks and Podcast

First of all, let me apologize for our very poor showing last week. I don’t know how anyone could have picked the sheer number of upsets that happened. We expect there to be a major correction this week with the favorites winning most of the games. Hopefully, we’ll average at leat 75% right and you guys will trust us with your office pools again.

It ain’t over ’til it’s over

Woo-hoo! I love this time of year. The Yankees are in the playoffs, the Hurricanes start tonight against the Canadiens and the Giants are finally showing signs of life! In my return from a long hiatus from Sportscolumn, I will be discussing the Big Blue. They didn’t play great in the opening two games, but against the Redskins and Eagles they came alive and high hopes for the season are back.

2007 Postseason Predictions and Awards

The other day, a friend of mine in my dorm bet me five dollars that the Cubs would advance farther than the Indians in this year’s playoffs. Naturally, I took the bet, for two reasons. First, he has no clue what he’s talking about, and secondly, well, I do. After thinking about it though, I realized I may have made a terrible mistake. Because looking at the matchups this year, I can not remember an October I’m looking forward to more in terms of the talent and storylines of each and every match-up. It’s hard to pick winners in a postseason when almost every series can go either way. But here goes anyway; JDWC’s predictions and analysis for the 2007 MLB postseason playoffs and awards.

Team U.S.A. – Choose Your Sport

In the U.S. where basketball, baseball and American football rule, the performance of our national teams in other competitions is sometimes overlooked.  Considering the importance placed on sports in our society and the money and resources available you are left to wonder how we cannot be more competitive in sports outside of our “comfort zone”.  

The Rugby World Cup ended for Team U.S.A. today following a thrashing at the hands of South Africa.  This was hardly a big surprise.  The United States is not exactly a rugby nation while South Africa won the World Cup in 1995 and is a contender whenever it steps on the pitch.

Flashes of Night

There was Carl Pavano, the supposed anchor turned albatross, battling on Opening Day of the 2007 season, searching futility for a strikeout pitch. He appears out of place in Yankee pinstripes, assuming a secondary skin, awkwardly wrenching arm overhead, seeking the pristine mechanics and precise command that bought him to the doorstep of stardom. Yes, seems too long ago, when Pavano, young, healthy, and fearless, owned the consensus as the top pitcher within 05’s hot stove menu. Matt Clement was deemed erratic, Pedro Martinez dubbed weathered. He was the one.
