Which Sports Fan are you?

This past Tuesday, I had the extreme pleasure of watching my Philadelphia Flyers, in a Philadelphia sports bar, end their season the “right way,” by losing 7-1 to Buffalo. As I sat watching the game, with my hands clenched and my face red, I had time (in between cursing the Flyers during the seven Buffalo goals) to get in some good “people” watching. I know you have heard of “people” watching. It’s the sport of watching people, who watch sports. A sports fan, especially a Philadelphia sports fan, is an interesting person to watch because there are many different categories that the person can fit into.

The Kentucky Derby: A Worthwhile Watch

by Frank M. Henkel

There was a time in these United States, perhaps a generation ago or more,
when sports resided in A.M. radio, and in the hearts of those who listened. Back
then; when the call was as important as the moment, the Kentucky Derby was one
of the most anticipated events of the year. That time may have passed, so does
that mean that we should scrap the Derby altogether?  Absolutely not!

When Will It Get Here

I can’t wait until this NFL season gets kicked off.  I can’t wait to see Chad Johnson’s next genious dance or for how T.O. will respond to Bill Parcell’s dictatorship.  I can’t wait until I wake up on Sunday morning, go to church, come home, and watch some football with some hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill.  I can’t wait to see which teams or rookies show up and step up to the challenge and who disappoints us all.  I can’t wait to see the underdogs pull out the victory with under two minutes left in the game.  I can’t wait to see the next record broken.  I can’t wait to see who spent the off-season wisely and who just goofed off and enjoyed the break.  To tell you the truth, I just can’t wait until the NFL season gets started once again.

To Go Forward- Or Rewind?

With the new season well underway, the Chicago White Sox are the reigning champs. However, due to umpire miscues, they did not get to the World Series without help.  Major League Baseball must stop ignoring the problem of their umpires’ inability to be perfect.  After all, what team wants to be considered lucky rather than great?

The Agony of Defeat- Again

How does one describe agony exactly?  As Philadelphia fans, we should have that description on the tip of our collective tongues.  But, alas, all good things must come to an end.  Was there any real good that came from this past Flyers season though?  Nothing that can fill up this article.

Someone Give the Pac-10 Some Love

Ever since I returned to New York after graduating from Arizona State, I have been trying to convince people to start watching the Pac-10. Pac-10 games are rarely on TV on the east coast and when they are they are on later in the evening – nonetheless the conference is worth watching when the games are aired.

MLB Power Rankings for May 5- 2006

Week three of the MLB Power Rankings and neither the Reds or the Tigers have fallen out of the sky. And, to think, Sparky Anderson is nowhere to be seen.

Modified Playoff System Needed in NBA- NHL- & MLB

With the playoffs having at last arrived for the NHL and the NBA, it is again time to speculate how meaningful the regular season has been when more than half of all teams qualify for the playoffs.  True, at least the very worst of teams have now been exiled from our viewing landscape.  Beyond this welcome respite, however, the whole point of the regular season seems unclear.  Suppose that, instead of the current system, all teams qualified for the playoffs.  The odds in Vegas would still be very high against any team beyond the top eight in a conference winning the championship anyway.  So, again, what then really was the point of these lengthy 82-game seasons?

Of course, having a better record entitles a playoff team to have home court/ice advantage in a playoff series.  But even this relatively minor perk can be largely removed by the opposing team merely being the first to win a road game.  With a view to making the regular season much more meaningful, I propose a simple but radical change in the way in which playoff match-ups are arranged: Let teams choose their own opponents.

Welcome Home!!!!……Now Get Out!

by Matt Wells

With the days of free agency and money-chasing upon us, we expect players in all four of the major sports to eventually depart to different clubs.  It seems inevitable nowadays.

However, don’t you think fans of the players’ former teams should forgive and forget if a player ends up going to a different team?  Don’t you think the players should be forgiven for leaving if they were successful for their previous teams?

Well, tell that to baseball fans.
