Futile No More

by Matt Wells

There was a time, not too long ago, where we were laughing at the futile efforts that sports teams (of the four major sports) were putting forth on a yearly or even daily basis.  We still laugh at some of those teams: the Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Devils Rays, Atlanta Hawks, and Houston Texans are just some of the futile teams that come to mind.

In the past decade, we’ve seen some previously futile teams become championship contenders, even if it has been for just a few seasons.  The New England Patriots, St. Louis Rams, and Indianapolis Colts (among others) have reached football respectability (the Rams have since fallen off).  Baseball has had the turnarounds of the Minnesota Twins (after a poor mid-1990s) and the Chicago White Sox.  Hockey has seen teams like the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Calgary Flames, and Tampa Bay Lightning rise to higher ranks.  Finally, basketball has seen the Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets climb out of the cellar.

Why Charlie Got Hustled: The Long Overdue Call From the Hall

“Playing baseball for a living is like having a license to steal.” – Pete Rose

Major League Baseball has committed a sin; an absolute crime. They have robbed a man of his lifelong dream; of the ultimate accomplishment in the game that he loves more than anything in the world. He was robbed of this achievement, which he rightfully earned, and perhaps deserved more than any other player in the history of the game. Pete Rose was cruelly robbed of his place as a baseball immortal.

The ESPY’s: A Show Not About Sports

Before my religious viewing of Fox’s Sunday night programming, I flipped the channel to watch the ESPY awards. In days of yore, it would be a no-brainer whether or not to watch the show. I watched Kobe effortlessly climb up the Laker ladder of history, and I watched Vince Young single-handedly run his team to victory. Reliving those moments is simply a Youtube search away. However, being a college kid, I left home and had something of a long distance relationship with the boob tube (too much homework). As a result, I made a vehement effort to catch the sports highlights I missed this year while not sacrificing an extravagant amount of Simpsons, Family Guy, and (dare I say it) American Dad content.

Unrecognized Deja Vu

2006 Tigers Record through 92 games: 62-30
World Champion 2005 White Sox Record through 92 games: 62-30

So why are the Tigers still considered the underdog while the White Sox were hailed as favorites? I’m not sure, but I hope I can change your mind.

Tigers or White Sox–Who’s got the edge?

In past years, the AL East owned the most interesting divisional race in baseball. And while the Yankees and Red Sox are at it again this year, they won’t be the race to watch. The AL Central race is simply fascinating, as the Tigers and the White Sox have the top two records in the majors and will battle until the end. But which team will emerge as the divisional champions? And which has the better shot at walking away with the title? Both are excellent, but one team has the edge.

A Different Look At The Headbutt Heard Round The World

by Trevor Freeman

It was a Thursday night affair against a nationally ranked Princeton squad.  While unranked, we had hung tough and were down only two midway through the third quarter.  Beating Princeton at Princeton would have been a huge feather in the cap of Fordham water polo.  A win there and perhaps our name starts getting mentioned as a top twenty caliber ballclub.

AFC South Breakdown

Training camps are about to start, fantasy leagues are being set up, and everyone’s starting to get football fever.  This is the best time of the year… if you don’t count the 21 weeks when football is actually being played.  So, what could be better than the third part of this series, as we take a look at the AFC South?

"Rule 5": The Golden Rule

by Matt Wells

Thanks to the All-Star game this past Tuesday, the name of Florida Marlin second baseman Dan Uggla was thrown around a lot.  Uggla joined a list of numerous players over the years to be chosen via the Rule 5 draft.  He became the first Rule 5 draft selection to become an All-Star in his first big-league season.

The success of Uggla, the Rule 5 castoff taken from the Diamondbacks, has had people scratching their heads.  They’re not scratching their heads at Uggla’s success; they’re scratching their heads about the draft rule.

What is the Rule 5 draft?  Read on…
