College Football Week 11 Thoughts

Why not Rutgers?
Before the their upset over Louisville there was talk that the Cardinals, after beating West Virginia the week before, would be in the BCS championship game if they got past Rutgers and ran the table.

So now that the Scarlet Knights are the Big East’s only undefeated team why are people saying that the conference’s chances of a national championship have died? Rutgers knocked-off Louisville and if they run the table they could throw a huge monkey wrench into the BCS.

If you are a BCS hater then you need to become a Scarlet Knights fan.

A Look Ahead

As we honor Patrick Roy, Herb Brooks, Dick Duff, and Harley Hotchkiss for their lifelong achievements in hockey, some can’t help but to wonder who will go in as the class of 2007. There are still some major names, like Mike Richter, Steve Larmer, and more that are still out there. Then there are the guys, like Al MacInnis, Pavel Bure, Ron Francis, and Mark Messier, who should be going into the Hall on their first try. Here now, is how the 2007 Hall class is handicapped.

2006 NFL Week 11 Picks

Tough week 10 for us here at Sportscolumn. Trevor went 9-7 but everyone else went 7-9. For the first time in a long time, we lost to the ESPN experts who had 59% correct. Somehow, despite a 7-9 week, Vegas Vinny still maintains the overall lead amongst all experts posting their picks on the web. If you want to see how we stack up against all the experts, check out a very nifty expert picks compilation spreadsheet by our buddy Tokar.

The featured games this week are Seattle @ San Francisco, Indianapolis @ Dallas, San Diego @ Denver, and NY Giants @ Jacksonville. You can download the podcast directly (running time 32 mins) or subscribe to the feed.

If you use iTunes, just click here and then click subscribe and iTunes will take care of the rest.

Taking in a game in the lion’s den

Back in August my sister’s boyfriend, now fiancée bought me tickets for the Jets-Patriots game in Foxboro. At first I thought to myself, why would I want to drive over three hours to see the helpless Jets get shellacked by New England IN THEIR STADIUM?

2006 NFL Power Rankings for Week 11

It certainly took us long enough but here are Sportscolumn’s first NFL Power Rankings this season. This is really a tough season to do them. Outside of the Top 5, the next 10 or so can be interchangeable. You can make a very good argument for any of the teams ranked 6-15 in any order. In any case, let’s hear your questions, comments, and of course, gripes.

Baseball Can Be A Dangerous Game

I was thumbing through a recent addition to my baseball library — The Baseball Anthology: 125 Years, edited by Joseph Wallace — and came across a couple of pages devoted to the tragic death of Ray Chapman in 1920. A common misconception is that Chapman was killed right there on the field of play. David Nemec and Peter Palmer in 1001 Fascinating Baseball Facts claim he was “the only on-field fatality in major league history.” According to at least one eyewitness, though, he died not on the field but in a hospital several hours after the event. And I can think of several ballplayers who died in similar fashion. James Creighton, the 19th-century pitching phenom, comes immediately to mind.

NHL Power Rankings for Nov 13 2006

Anahiem has been a busy team, making three trades this week. Stanislav Chistov went to Boston, Todd Fedoruk is back with the Flyers, and Colorado got a second round pick from the Ducks. The moves were done after they vaulted to number one in this weeks rankings, while the Sabres stand pat at number two. At the bottom, the Coyotes and Flyers still bring up the rear. Where does your team rank?

Honestly- the Big 12 is just awful

I’m sorry, but the Big 12 is just awful.

Alright, the conference has never been great, but after years of mediocrity, not even the conference’s biggest proponents can muster up a defense.

What a Saturday…

In the 2006 college football season, this weekend was pretty much written off as a weekend where we had one or two big games, but nothing that should have shocked the pollsters.
But by God, it did.
