NHL Power Rankings for Dec 26 2006

In the middle of the holiday festivities, and the hockey couldn’t be hotter. The Northwest division boasts a three-way tie, while other divisional races are heating up. The Christmas break is over, and now it’s a fight to the next break, during All-Star weekend. There was no change at the top, with the top eight staying right where they are. Meanwhile, Tim Thomas helps Boston jump an amazing nine spots this week. On the other side of the spectrum, the Orcas out of Vancouver drop three important games, and nine spots this week. Where did your team end up?

The Bottom Of The Pile

The NFL playoff race is shaping up as the season comes to a close. However, the teams that won’t be in the postseason made some news-worthy actions this week as well.

Proposed Realignment in NHL

The NHL has announced a plan to go back into the future by bringing back four team divisions based on their time zones. For example, Colorado, Calgary, and Los Angels would all be in the same division because they are Mountain and Pacific Time zones. There would still be eight teams per conference making the playoffs, with the top two divisional finishers per division getting the top four seeds, and the other four seeds given to “wild card” teams. How would the playoffs look this year?

I Spit In Your Face

When you watch ESPN after anything happens with Terrell Owens, you get a sense of hypocrisy.  Let’s take this latest incident where he spit in DeAngelo Hall’s face.  Wait this is the same DeAngelo Hall that took a cheap shot at Rudi Johnson’s knees in week 8.  At least getting spit on doesn’t injure you.  ESPN talks about Tank Johnson and his off the field issues by simply stating what happened.  They don’t dig deep into his character and talk about him being a problem for his team.   I know T.O. has done a lot in his tenure as an NFL receiver do deserve attention, but maybe everyone should just state the facts and move on.  Is it really necessary to talk every week about how he’s such a problem and how something needs to be done before it blows up in their face.  Well, based on what they’ve said from the beginning, the Cowboys should be feeling the backlash by now.  You don’t have to like T.O. because of all the things he’s done, but you sure can ignore it.  My god it’s the only way Cowboys fans can continue to like their team.  This isn’t a defense of Terrell Owens, but rather a story about the focus of the people at ESPN.

NBA Power Rankings for Dec 21 2006

After a week break, the NBA Power Rankings are back with a brawl and a blockbuster. It was an interesting week for the Nuggets, who came out anything but Golden. However, through all the blundering of two weeks, the Knicks cannot be denied their post.

What’s Next?

The verdict was handed down, and the jury said no. Mario Lemeiux and company is back to square one with the Penguins. Isle of Capri was not granted a gaming license, which would have signaled that the Penguins future in Pittsburgh was secure. This comes on top of the news that Jim Bastille has severed ties with the Penguins ownership after the NHL’s Board of Governors blocked the sale over concerns that he would move the team.

The Propaganda Files: Stavring for Another Season?

By Rob LaBrie

A flash comes across the screen, “Breaking News!” it reads in immortal ESPN text.  It’s midnight and you just realize you’ve been dozing off on the couch.  You see the screen and you decide it’s worth wiping the drool off the side of your face and sitting up to see what the news is before hitting the sack.  Naturally, John Clayton pops up on the screen.  “I’ve just received big news out of Green Bay.  It seems Brett Favre may have played his last game in the NFL.  Sources close to Favre say the legendary quarterback is leaning toward retirement.  Of course, this is not set in stone, but we are one step closer to seeing Favre hang it up [pushes glasses up higher on his nose and sniffles].”  You put your pants back on to hear this?  Well, at least it must mean pitchers and catchers will be reporting pretty soon…

Good to be Green… for now

By Rob LaBrie

Five games ago, they were the worst team in the worst division in sports, a broken franchise with no hope of being fixed.  Their young players were absolutely terrible, their coach had absolutely no idea, their GM was an absolute failure, and their only star was playing with absolutely no help.
