Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. Vegas Vinny: You know who the best corner back in the league is? Champ Bailey. You know who the second best corner in the league is? Well, it’s not Darrent Williams. And while Champ Bailey locks up Chad Johnson, Williams will have to deal with TJ Houshmanzadeh who is every bit as good as Chad this year. And while the Bengals secondary was embarassed by Manning and Harrison on Monday Night, the Broncos passing game isn’t nearly as good, especially with Javon Walker playing through a separated shoulder he sustained last week. The Broncos will have to win this game with their run game and the Bengals run D isn’t that bad. They rank 13th in the league. The Broncos defensive hole? That’s right, pass defense, ranked 22nd vs the pass. Finally, Carson Palmer doesn’t have two bad weeks in a row. The last time he played a game as bad as he did on Monday Night, it was against the Ravens in week 9. Well, in week 10, he came out and threw for 440 yards against San Diego, who aren’t exactly a bad defense. Expect to see lots of replays of Bengals WRs running down the field to the end zone. All this adds up to me taking the Bengals (+3) and putting $165 on it. (Balance = $1050)

BostonMac: I don’t love any of the lines this week, so I’m going to have to go with the team with the second-best record in the AFC, Baltimore, getting three points against a very mediocre Steelers team. Granted, the game is at Heinz Field, but Steve McNair and the Ravens are going to win the game outright. McNair is 9-4 against the Steelers in his career, and currently has the longest active streak of consecutive passes without an INT. (I hope I didn’t just jinx him.) Even though he was a little banged up last week, he’ll be back this week, will be well-rested, and will be ready to battle for that first-round bye. Even though the Steelers are still mathematically in the playoff hunt, the Ravens are hungry for the bye and that second-round home game. After hitting on my $200 Buffalo lock last week, I’m going to scale this one back to $55 to win $50 and look to take home the title in Week 17. Let’s go with BALTIMORE (+3). (Balance = $1100)

Trevor F: There’s an old phrase that goes…..if ain’t broke don’t fix it. Well I have been riding the Tennessee Titans the last three weeks and apparently Las Vegas hasn’t picked up on it. The Titans have won five straight games (including their last two roadies) and they haven’t been over crap teams. Their list of scalps include Philly, the New York Giants, Indy and Jacksonville. Ever since Vince Young has taken over the Titans have looked like a completely different team. Why do I bring this up? Because Tennessee is currently getting four and a half points in Buffalo. I know that it is cold in Buffalo but I think the Titans are on too big of a roll and can overcome the weather to win outright. Worst case scenario……. the four and a half points buys you an easy backdoor cover as well. I lost a little ground by going with my Marty Schottenheimeresque $55 wager. This week we are going to up the ante and go $110 on the Titans (+4.5). (Balance = $1225)

RJ Warner: I don’t want to play this game anymore! I’m taking my ball and going home! You guys didn’t play fair! Oh sure, spit at the fat kid! It may have been a disasterous season on locks, but I think I have a Can’t Miss one here in the bag in week 16. Green Bay at home in what will probably Brett Favre’s last home game at Lambeau Field. Remember last season when the 13-2 Seahawks lost to the 3-12 Packers at Lambeau because the NFL thought it might be Brett Favre’s last game? Well, this is Favre’s last game at Lambeau this year. While nobody will see it because it’s on a Thursday, do you think the NFL is going to let the Green Bay faithful go home disappointed? Whatever I have left on Green Bay Thursday night. (Balance = $130)
