The Most Important Player In Basketball

by Trevor Freeman

“I can’t even explain him.  He’s scary.”
-Armando Surratt, point guard, University of San Francisco

I remember the first time I heard his name.  Dick Vitale was hyping him up to be the next Larry Bird.  This was before he was about to take the court at Madison Square Garden for the first game of his collegiate career.  Imagine the pressure he must have felt.  Imagine knowing that from now on, the only person you would ever be compared with is “The Hick from French Lick.”  The fact that this eighteen-year-old kid didn’t seem fazed by it was the first sign of his future greatness.

Dear Chris Mullin-

Dear Chris Mullin,

Congratulations!  The Golden State Warriors are 17-16 and have a real shot to make the playoffs for the first time since 1992.  From McClymonds to St. Joseph’s and from USF to UC-Berkeley, the Bay Area had always been a haven for high school and college basketball.  However for the first time in years, the Golden State Warriors are stealing the front page in winter.  Not since you paired with Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond has the phrase, “I doubt we can get tickets, that game is definitely sold out” been uttered.

Welcome to "Dirty December"

by Trevor Freeman

Well it took years of debate, but finally “Dirty December” has come to fruition.  Perhaps it was the realization that massive amounts of money were being left on the table (i.e. $300 million dollar BCS contract with Fox versus $6 billion dollar NCAA Tournament package).  However, the reasons don’t matter.  To the rejoice of college football fans and the gambling public, let’s breakdown our first 16-team national title tournament.

The Road to March is About to Begin

by Trevor Freeman

Ahhhhh…..it is finally creeping closer.  Midnight Madness.  Rivalry Week.  March.  That’s right…..college basketball season is right around the corner.  From Sporting News to Blue Ribbon, college hoops previews are beginning to flood the coffee tables of houses across a nation.  The terms “Sleeper” and “Diaper Dandy” have begun to invade the everyday vocabulary as hope always springs eternal at the start of each campaign.  This year is particularly big for me as the boys from Fordham University have a legitimate shot at the postseason for the first time in years.

Help Wanted

by Trevor Freeman

Not sure if you caught this? Actually I’m pretty sure nobody has. USA Water Polo is advertising the opening for the position of Men’s National Team Head Coach/Director on the front page of their website (www.usawaterpolo.com). This position became available when Ratko Rudic, the legendary Yugoslavian head coach who took over the United States Olympic Team, resigned in December of 2004 to take over his native Croatia.

"Who Dey"

by Trevor Freeman

As background, I need to let everybody watching at home know how I spend my NFL Sundays.  My typical Sunday involves pitchers of beer and platters of wings at my local bar, McCann’s, which has the NFL Sunday Ticket.  Some may call this bar the United Nations of NFL fans as each team is represented.  From the Steelers to the Cowboys to the Bengals to the 49ers, the chants fly.

The Ten Best Rivalries in Sports

by Trevor Freeman

Inspired by seven beers and a raucous Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins tilt on Monday night, I decided to have some fun and list the ten best rivalries in sports.  After crunching the keyboard and getting some sage advice from fellow sports fans, I arrived at this list.  Enjoy………

A Better Human Being Than Wide Receiver

by Trevor Freeman

I will never forget the time I met Jerry Rice.  My third grade Parks & Recreation basketball team, the Our Lady of Loretto Panthers was going to face off with the Loma Verde Jammers at halftime of the Golden State Warriors game.  Prior to our scheduled duel, my teammate Gary Swett decided to purchase a hot dog.  While walking and eating it at the same time he ran smack dab into Jerry Rice.  Immediately Gary came charging back to all of us and informed us that Jerry Rice was sitting not too far from our seats.  This led all of us to walk over and stare at Jerry Rice (and Jeff Fuller as an added bonus).  Jerry Rice could have had security remove all of us, but instead he graciously signed autographs and let every single member of our team try on his Super Bowl ring.

Cincinnati Gets Rid of Huggy Bear

By Trevor Freeman

I think it was Bobby Knight that once remarked 20,000 people don’t pay to watch somebody doing chemistry experiments.
