I think the proper way to get this blog started off is to explain my name: WaitingForAChampionship. Therefore, because I cannot think of anything else to write, this first entry will be devoted to describing the misery I have endured for 19 years.

It’s not easy living being a Philadelphia sports fan. Sure, there have been glory years in the past, but unfortunately for me, they occurred before December 17th, 1986-a date which according to me, is probably the most important day in the last century, beating out D-Day by an impressive margin. My father raised me as an all Philadelphia sports fan- that meant rooting for the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers. God forbid I was a Celtics or Braves fan.  My mother’s contribution to my love of sports? The Kansas Jayhawks, the only team that has provided me with a championship (more on that later). As my father always says, I’m doomed to be disappointed.

It’s getting closer to that time of the year again, when NBA fans(whose numbers are dwindling as we speak) get to play the “NBA GM game.”  For those of you unfamiliar with the game, its kind of like Dungeons and Dragons for hoop fans.  In this game, I will pretend to be an NBA general manager, and try to conceive a trade that would help my team improve.  Unfortunately, given the absurdities of the NBA salary cap, this game is coming dangerously close to requiring an MBA to participate.  

And so with great fanfare I present to you a deal whose time has come: Earl Watson (Denver Nuggets) for Ricky Davis (Celtics).  This is the proverbial deal that helps both sides.

Each April, most of us are guaranteed three things-Rain, taxes and Mel Kiper Jr. Yes folks, I’m talking about the NFL Draft. This season’s Heisman race has already sparked some debate about what may happen come April 29th, and I’m offering my opinion on who is taken with the first pick.

   Larry Brown said after a practice last Thursday that “this was much harder than I thought it would be” concerning his pitiful 6-16 New York Knicks. Brown, who last year was sitting pretty with this years most dominant team the Detroit Pistons, decided that even though he had told reporters and interviewees numerous times that Detroit was his last head coaching job that he would change his mind and “stab” Detroit fans in the back.

This week finally brings the Colts up against a legitamate oppenent, along with matching up the Minnesota Vikings that actually has a winning record. This week is also crucial to so many teams chances to attain a Playoff Berth; here is how I see them ending up.

Note: Do not use the spreads if you wouldnt like to.

With proponents and opponents continuing to argue back and forth, the NBA dress code debate refuses to go away.  Recently more gas was poured on the firestorm as news of the NBA players’ union filing a grievance objecting to 13 players being fined for wearing their shorts too long went public.  Enough is enough.  It is time for honesty to reign.  David Stern is a smart man.  Being a smart man, he surely knows the only way to fix the NBA’s “image” crisis is to give the fans he seeks what they want.  Everything else is akin to placing a band-aid over a broken bone.

The Houston Texans will be 10-6 and finally make the playoffs.  The Minnesota Vikings will be the champions of the NFC.  The Baltimore Ravens will finish 10-6 and make it to the AFC championship.  The Philadelphia Eagles will make it to their fifth consecutive NFC championship game.  The Detroit Lions will finally break out of their shell and make the playoffs.  The New York Jets finally put it all together and make it to the Super Bowl and bring some respect to the “other” New York team.  The Arizona Cardinals will win the NFC west with a 10-6 record and bring an end to the playoff drought.  These are just a few preseason projections that fans across the country saved in their `Told ya so’ rants for December and January.  But like every NFL season, there are the teams that make the ever-so-common `My predictions will be right on this season’ fan look like an English professor trying to teach French.

Imagine this for a minute.  Imagine sitting down and watching all the NFL games played so far, but with a twist.  Imagine that prior to this season you have never watched any football in your life.  You’re completely new to the sport and evaluating people just as you see it.  With no bias from previous seasons or accomplishments from 7 years ago jading your judgment.
