The Perfect BCS Playoff System

Why has the most controversial topic in sports today, next to steroid testing, for some reason, gone unsolved when the perfect BCS playoff format is at the countries fingertips?  Most of the things that make a BCS playoff, supposedly impossible, are all dealt with in my perfect plan to make over 80% of college football fans, including myself, happy.  This is not a crazy plan with 64 teams, or impossible lengths of playing time to be finished by the beginning of January, as the college season always has.

Getting Back Into the Spring of Things

Now that the NCAA Basketball Tournament has ended, this means that it is time for die-hard collegiate sports fans to sway their attention toward another sport.  That sport would be, of course, football-for any of you whom haven’t caught on to the sports drift.  With only the college football season ending last January, it is never too early to start asking questions about the next upcoming season.  The one question all fans will have this year, is of course, who’s the BCS going to get this year?

Another year- another national champion?

After USC defeated Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl, the Trojans were crowned champions of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), but the team that finished No. 1 in the BCS may not be the best college football team in the country. Though they won the tough SEC with an undefeated record, Auburn was denied a chance to play for a national championship.

The BCS was created to determine a single champion by pitting the top two computer- and poll-generated teams against each other. But this bowl season, like the last, has created more doubt than certainty.

Trojan Wars: The Best Player Won’t Win the Heisman

By Sean Quinn

“Citizen Kane” was snubbed an Oscar back in 1941.  It lost to “How Green Was My Valley.”  Marshall Faulk was snubbed the Heisman Trophy in 1992.  He lost to Gino Toretta.  Orson Welles’ classic film went on to be called the greatest film of all time by the American Film Institute.  Marshall Faulk will probably be in the Hall of Fame someday.  I was snubbed, regrettably yet again, by the folks at People Magazine and their list of the “50 Most Beautiful People.”  All I’m shooting for is to be remembered for something, but that is neither here nor there.  Reggie Bush will probably be snubbed the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, perhaps to his teammate Matt Leinart.  Leinart will no doubt have a better career than Toretta did in the NFL.  Heck, Ryan Leaf had a more productive stint in the NFL than did Toretta.  And by no means is anyone sculpting a bronze bust in Canton for the sophomore USC running back just yet, but if the Heisman Trophy is designated for the best player in college football, Leinart’s backfield buddy should be holding some type of bronze hardware Saturday night.

No Fight Left in the Irish

By Sean Quinn

Tyrone Willingham was not the problem with Notre Dame football.  Whoever puts on the headset next in South Bend will have the same difficulties Willingham did.  The problem isn’t the coaching.  The problem is that Notre Dame’s allure has melted away faster than Joan Rivers’ face.

A new record

But now there is even a more embarrassing situation for an SEC coach. No, it is not an affair. No, it is not a false hiring. No, it isn’t even an NCAA rules violation.

The Wrong Decision

I am writing today because I am having major issues with the whole Clemson-SC football fight that so many people label a brawl.  The decision to not accept a bowl bid by Clemson University was one that isn’t the right thing to do and was more of a pressure type decision that stems from the media.
