Another NBA Season is Upon Us

Last season there were the usual suspects for the crown of NBA Champion — the Spurs, Mavs, Pistons, and Suns… but one man (and an officiating crew) took the trophy to South Beach.  The “New Breed” of NBA talent is and may have already taken over the league.  D-Wade, LeBron, Melo, Chris Bosh, and Dwight Howard are going to get some of that superstar attention, and it’s well deserved.  Those guys are the real deal.  Some mainstays, like Kobe, AI, K-G, and Paul Pierce are going to whittle away on sub-par teams.  Meanwhile the Spurs and Mavs will plug away victory after victory, and the Suns will…run.

The Champion comes from the East, but the competition is in the West.  I get the inkling that 7 of the top 10 teams in the league are west of the Mississippi.  I don’t have many big predictions, or bold statements to make, because I think they are all futile given no one has played a game yet.  For all I know, the two teams I like to play in June could be in the lottery, that is how fragile some teams’ hopes are.  This is just an average man’s take on what might happen in the 06-07 NBA season.  Good luck fellas.

Red Auerbach- the Last of a Generation

By C. Eric Lincoln

My first impression of Red Auerbach will be my lasting impression of Red Auerbach. Red Auerbach was a New York guy who grew up on tough New York streets, a guy who might well have been a character created by Damon Runyon. Red would have been a Runyon race track guy with a racing form rolled up in his pocket and a dead cigar in hand, always looking for angles — always looking for a winning edge. And for the better part of his 89 years Red Auerbach always found a winning edge.

A Power Shift in the East

There is absolutely no reason I should be sitting here talking or, rather yet, thinking about basketball, especially since the NFL is about two weeks away from kicking off. Yet, here I am, with no choice.

There has been such a flurry of activity, especially in the East, that I have no choice but to sit back and try to make sense of any of what has happened.

So, with a long way until the start of the season, I give you: My Eastern Conference Playoff Scenario.

Fizzled Firework

There is this weird feeling that I felt when I heard that Ben Wallace was going to sign with the Chicago Bulls this off-season instead of the Detroit Pistons.  It is hard to explain, I wasn’t upset or happy.  I’m not a fan of either team, but I don’t dislike either of them like the team that wears purple and gold.  I enjoy watching the Pistons because they are one of three or four teams that still play defense, and the Bulls are that team of young guys who shoot pretty well and are a player away from being really good.  This off-season might see an Iverson trade, or a KG trade, and some definite shake-ups in New York, but one thing was supposed to be A-B-C, Ben Wallace re-signing with the Pistons.  So when the news leaked that he was Windy City bound, I really felt “blah” about it.

The Balkman and Bailey Circus

By David J. Cohen

The NBA draft has hit the 2 hour mark. So far the proceedings have been chaotic, with everyone trading picks all over the place. Portland makes a trade every 20 minutes. Villanova G Randy Foye has already been on 3 NBA teams. Shane Battier is a Rocket. And somehow UConn PG Marcus Williams is still on the board. The Kings take Quincy Douby, and as the next coming of Jason Kidd lies in wait with his momma the New York Knicks are on the clock.

Breaking Down The NBA Draft

by Trevor Freeman

I don’t know what it is about the NBA Draft, but it always lends to great moments.  From Steve Francis crying in disgust after being drafted by Vancouver to Priest Lauderdale storming out of the crowd to shake David Stern’s hand after being picked, the Draft is always top-notch.  However this year’s version reached epic proportions on Wednesday night.  For last night after the Knicks picked Mardy Collins, ESPN decided to send Mark Jones into the crowd to interview a Knicks fan.  The fan (who was clearly lubricated) ripped Isiah Thomas on national television in what was an outstanding Brooklyn accent.  I can only imagine what the producers of the draft were screaming in Mark Jones microphone when he cut the fan off.  Outstanding comedy.  Outstanding Draft.
