As 20, 000 plus Eagles fans gather to watch a team with great expectations go through training camp everyday, their star free-agent, Terrell Owens, knows that he must play a crucial role in fulfilling those expectations. The Eagles fans are aware of this, as they shout out choruses of “T.O.” chants frequently during practices. They are aware of this as they camp out overnight to get Owens’ autograph. They are aware of this as they buy out the Eagles tickets for the entire season, in a matter of 20 minutes.
Jennie Finch vs Maria Sharapova

As the Olympic Games begin, there are two events we are focused on. #1 is the Men’s basketball team and whether they’ll be able to bring home the gold. #2 is, simply, Jennie Finch. Not USA Womens Softball. Just Jennie Finch.
Call me shallow but when it comes to womens sports, the first thing I want to know is, “is she hot?”… quickly followed by “is she hotter than the last flavor of the month”. (Terrell Owens has never said “If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat” about me.)
The last hot athlete we had on SC was Maria Sharapova. So the obvious question is this: Jennie Or Maria?
James Parks presents a pre-season look at 5 players from each conference that will be in the running for conference player of the year.
Florida was good to me
In my first months writing for this website I was praying for a good story. I’d wake up, turn on sportscenter, check the local paper, check magazines and find that nothing was going on in the sports world. Oh sure, there was little things. I wrote on The Bobcats first draft (wow, that was memorable), on Steve Nash to Phoenix, On Denver attracting superstar talent, and Coach K dissing the Lakers. BUT WHERE WAS THE BIG STORY?!?!?!? It seemed the sports world had gone on vacation. So i joined it.

Can US Basketball Recover?
The one thing about college football is, with the exception of Jason White, you only get to see your favorite players play for 4 or 5 years tops. And sometimes not even that long. Great, legendary players come around a lot, but it seems they leave quicker then they came.
2004 will be no different, especially after the flood of great players to the NFL this season. This leaves a huge void on the teams, but now we’ll take a look at the players who will try to continue the magic.
It’s The Salary Cap- Stupid!
Not Everyone Understands Why the Celtics Traded for Gary Payton
Does anyone remember the obscure Saturday Night Live sketch that showed the New York Times pressroom the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor? The Times’ editors were trying to determine what the next day’s front page story should be, while an increasingly crazed newsman (played by the late Phil Hartman) attempts in vain to convince his colleagues that the attack is the only story that should be considered. Although I can’t recall the exact wording in the sketch, the other editors do their best to calm Phil down, telling him something like “we’re just trying to cover all our bases.” In the end, the headline the following morning turns out to be “Local Reporter Commits Suicide,” whereas the report about Pearl Harbor was a tiny blurb on one of the back pages. I’m starting to understand what he was going through.
Last season, as many Denver fans would tell you, a travesty occurred in the Denver sports area. No, I am not talking about the underacheiving of the Avalanche (that’s the Colorado hockey team for the 99% who do not watch this sport), or the whuppin’ by the Colts on the Broncos, 41-10. I am instead talking about the NBA Rookie of the Year voting.
Carmelo Anthony, hot off a NCAA championship to go along with a Most Outstanding Player in the tourney better known as March Madness helped lead a Nuggets team to 26 more victories (17 in ’02-’03 to 43 in ’03-’04) and a playoff berth in the Western Conference. But then the votes for RoY were cast, and the winner was…LeBron James?

MINI-TAKES – August 9- 2004

Quite a few topics that merit mentioning have arisen in the past week, but I don’t think any of them are worthy of an entire column, so I have decided to sell out and write a condensed "short takes" column. If I like it, maybe I’ll turn this into a weekly or semi-weekly feature here on SportsColumn, the Revolution in Sports Journalism. Hey, if it works for Bill Simmons and Bill Reynolds of the Providence Journal, then why can’t it work for me, right?
