It began at 10:00 on a Saturday morning. It was poorly advertised and unfortunatly fell on the beginning of the fourth of July weekend. Because of all of these reasons, I am guessing (haven’t seen any ratings) that not many people tooned in to see the Wimbledon woman’s final between Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams. For all those who did, you know it was an amazing match that contained all the intangibles that true sports fans look for in championship matches.
Baseball has seemed so desperate over the past few years in the attempt of trying to have fans watch their all-star game. It doesn’t make much sense that the sport, which is America’s Pastime, would try so hard at attempting to attract viewers. Well, Major League Baseball has made so many adjustments over the years to the “Midsummer Classic” that it isn’t even funny, and now many of these changes have not fared too well for the game of baseball. The one thing Major League Baseball wants its fans to remember from now on when they watch the gathering of the league’s all-stars is that “This Time It Counts”.
If anything irritates sports nabobs, it’s athletes who abuse the press and somehow still come out on top. That’s the story today about Texas Rangers LHP Kenny Rogers getting the All-Star nod.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ Jeremy Roenick voiced his frustrations recently with both the players and the owners of the league saying how it’s critical that “they” get back on the ice as soon as possible. Roenick ripped everyone imaginable who had any sort of relation with the current hockey mess. However, Roenick didn’t know that he would soon be ripping members of the media. For some reason Roenick felt as though his comments about the art of fans kissing his backside were taken way out of context. Roenick’s comments weren’t necessarily taken out of context, but one thing for sure was- the importance of the NHL to America.
With the #2 pick in the NBA Draft, The Atlanta Hawks select, Marvin Williams forward from the University of North Carolina. A massive draft mistake, Williams proved in one year of college that he had potential. Potential is the killer of many young athletes, forcing teenagers to try to live up to the hype. Williams may have talent but he may be one of the most overrated players to hit the NBA in since Shawn Bradley.
The Boston Red Sox started the year pretty quiet. Their Ace in their staff, Curt Schilling, was put on the DL with his infamous ankle bruise. Their record was overshadowed by the Orioles impressive start and Boston’s average one. Some people were a little too quick to count the defending World Champions out.
