Tony Gwynn’s Legacy Could Have Profound Impact

By Diane M. Grassi

This Major League Baseball (MLB) post-season, a direct plea was made by Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ6) to the managements of MLB, the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants.

He requested, in a letter dated October 25, 2010, to “Ban the use of tobacco products during the World Series.” Congressman Pallone was specifically making reference to the use of smokeless tobacco products and the impact upon youth who see MLB players routinely using the product during MLB games.

Reinstate the Red!

By Ryan McGowan

Bob Rafter was there at the beginning, and it wasn’t pretty.

“I was at the first preseason game with Elvis,” Rafter, 28, of Phoenix, but a Franklin (Mass.) native, said, referring to the current Patriots logo, which debuted in 1993 to replace the original “Pat Patriot”, the beloved icon that adorned the team’s helmets since the franchise’s first season as a charter member of the AFL in 1960.  “There were literally planes flying overhead dismissing Elvis.”

Rafter is not alone in Patriots Nation in his nostalgia for the original red-dominant uniforms.  Despite the franchise’s extended run of success since that ’93 season (which, not coincidentally, was the beginning of the Bill Parcells/Drew Bledsoe era), many fans clamor for a full-time return to the iconic jerseys of the team’s past.

Since the chance of jinxing the team’s success by switching uniforms at this point is pretty much moot, it needs to be said: the Patriots need to bring back the red jerseys and the Pat Patriot logo.

Italy-Serbia Fiasco: UEFA punishes Slovenia, Estonia, N. Ireland, Faroe Islands

UEFA’s decision to award Italy with a 3-0 win is not fair no matter how you look at it, and I don’t care what Serbia think.

Serbian fans crossed the line; their actions were against the better interest of sport, and the punishment that Serbia received is just. Serbia deserves to forfeit the match and to have to play its next two home fixtures behind closed doors.

The actions of the supporters were disgusting.

Italy did not come away unscathed, as they were fined 100,000 euros for their security failing to contain the rowdy Serbian supporters.

But no matter what Serbia did, Italy does not deserve a 3-0 win, not so long as this competition is supposed to be fair for Slovenia, Estonia, Northern Ireland, and the Faroe Islands, the other four national teams in Group C.

Life After Bobby

September 10, 2000 – The gloomy weather in Bloomington, Ind. on that fall day could have been considered a bad omen. Every Hoosier’s worst nightmare was occurring in the swampy marsh of Dunn Meadow. Robert Montgomery Knight, the General, was giving his farewell speech to a group of angst-ridden and drenched student protesters. He did it in classic Bobby Knight fashion, but the day was far too sad to ponder such a triviality. What was to become of Indiana University basketball?

This was our nightmare.

College Football Week 6: HALF-Time!!!

First off, I’m sorry to the futile few who missed last week’s article which I obviously did not produce. I was extremely swamped with work and had zero time to compose a piece; hopefully this article will make up for that absence. On to more important things now! We are halfway through the regular season of CFB which is sad but it is what it is. Some transparent occurrences happened and some others that were less veiled. Bottom line: We can now predict this season about as accurately as we can predict Charlie Sheen’s drug and domestic abuse problems…..which is not saying much at all. There are still a ton of games that have influential value on this season’s BCS champion and we’ll get to the games that have the gavel effect later. In the meantime, let’s recap the weekend Minions!
