MLB Power Rankings Wrapup and Playoff Preview

Well, folks, it’s finally here. The baseball season has ended, award votes have been cast, and the playoffs are about to begin. The Astros and Phillies both made last-second runs at the postseason, but came up just short. The Dodgers put the pressure on the Padres to win their last game of the season, and San Diego responded by winning the game, and tying for the lead in the West. The Padres get the pennant on the basis of the tie-breaker, defeating the Dodgers in 13 of 18 meetings, a stat that might be worth remembering if they both win their opening round matches. Also, the last team to take the Wild Card on the basis of a tie in standings, but a loss of the tie-breaker, was the ’04 Red Sox who beat the Yankees in seven, and swept the Cardinals in the Series.

On the American League side, the Twins captured the AL Central pennant on the last day of the season, and will face the playoff-pitiful Oakland A’s. Detroit, by reason of losing the Central pennant will have to face the mighty Yankees. One way or another, it should be an interesting couple of weeks. I, personally, have a busy schedule planned for the next three weeks- three games on Tuesday, three more games on Wednesday, two on Thursday… I might have to buy new couch cushions by the end of October.

On a different note, this is the last MLB Power Rankings article of the season, and I’d like to thank everybody who’s read the articles, and the people who have made comments. Enjoy the rankings, and a first round playoff preview, and as always, questions, comments, and complaints, are welcomed.

Daunte’s Inferno

by Matt Wells

The Indianapolis Colts.  The Cincinnati Bengals.  The Pittsburgh Steelers.  These were just some of the teams picked to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year.  All three picks make sense; every one of those teams went to the playoffs last year, with the Steelers winning it all.

Another team added in the mix of Super Bowl contenders prior to this season were the Miami Dolphins.  This was the trendy pick.  Many people chose the Dolphins to go all the way and Daunte Culpepper’s name was thrown out there as a potential MVP candidate.  The pieces were in place: Culpepper was the new QB, Ronnie Brown was still carrying the load out of the backfield, and Chris Chambers was still the top receiver on the team.  Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor still anchor the defense.

Northeast Division Preview

The NHL season is just three days away. With that being said, the NHL previews continue with the Northeast division. Boston made some major news in the off-season, signing superstar Zedno Chara to a five year 37.5 million dollar contract. The main questions for this division lie in Toronto, Ottawa, and in Buffalo. Let’s take a look at how the new look Northeast will shake down.

THIS IS WHY WE WATCH BASEBALL

The past two weeks in baseball will be two weeks that I could hardly forget.  I mean sure the American League playoff teams are set with the Yankees, Twins, Tigers, and A’s making the post-season this year.  But now it is the National League’s turn as only one of the four playoffs spots have been secured.  So as I speak six teams are fighting for three more spots in this years playoffs.  And you better believe all six teams have as realistic a chance as the Mets to play baseball in October.  So let’s see the teams involved.

It’s time to lay off of Jake Plummer

3-0 That’s Jake Plummer’s record against the 3 time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. He’s taken the Broncos to the playoffs 3 times in 3 years. Including last years AFC Championship game.

Under Gary Kubiak, Jake Plummer has had the best 3 years of his career.  Yes, he’s had a lot of interceptions in his first 2 years, but last years performance should be an indicator of Jake becoming more mature as a football player.

So how come 4 years ago Denver Bronco fans were cheering, `We Want Jake!!’ And now, they want him gone. Would it still be that way if he did take the Broncos to the Super Bowl?  And what if Jake did help them win the big one?

Atlantic Division Preview

The NHL’s Atlantic Division seems to be one of the weaker divisions this coming season. With aging superstars, bloated budgets and insane contracts, the Atlantic division is going to be a struggle to stomach this year. However, there are some bright spots to this division. Young stars like Sidney Crosby, Henrik Lundqvist, and R.J. Umberger, look to be key players for their respective teams this season. Let’s see how the teams will stack up.

The American Project

In 1985, The Citadel linebacker Marc Buoniconti, son of now-hall-of-famer Nick Buoniconti, almost died trying to make a tackle. Luckily, he was only paralyzed.

Now, almost a full 21 years and more than half of his life later, Buoniconti, 40, will return to The Citadel to have his number retired.

The End of a Record Service

There are two ways I could start this article that would mislead you to think I was talking about someone else.

I could say, “The last man to beat Pete Sampras on the ATP Tour may have just played his last match.” Or, I could say, “The U.S. Open could have been the last tournament for another record-setting legend.” But I won’t.

2006 NFL Week 4 Picks

Last week we went a combined 33-23, a win percentage of .589. While this a big dropoff since the previous week, it was a tough week all around for pigskin prognosticators — the ESPN “experts” only went .541. The top scorer for the third straight week was Vegas Vinny going 10-4. We’re also going to let the weekly winner of the Sportscolumn pickem contest pick the games as well. Week 3’s winner was Jackson with 12 correct and his picks for this week are included below.

The featured games this week are Minnesota @ Buffalo, San Diego @ Baltimore, New England @ Cincinnati, and Seattle @ Chicago. You can download the podcast directly (running time 35 mins) or subscribe to the feed.
