And the Saints Come Marching Home

Let me tell you a little something about myself that you hopefully already know from my previous articles: I’m a sports fanatic, but I’m mainly a baseball guy. I know my fair share about other sports and watch more than my share of them.

This is just a warning, because I’ve never tried to put my predictions into writing about any sport other than baseball. But, with the NFL playoffs being so intriguing this year, I decided to try my hand at predicting the winners, losers and award-winners.

So here it goes, JDWC’s first attempt at picking who will stay, who will go, and who will bathe in champagne in Miami. Read at your own risk.

NHL Power Rankings for Week 1 of 2007

The Sabers take the first number one in 2007, with the Ducks hot on their heels. On the other side of the countdown, the bottom five hasn’t changed one bit. Where did your team end up?

The Missing Link In Division 1A College Football

Yes. This is another article related to a playoff in division 1A college football. Division 1A college football is lacking a playoff, and that is a fact. I am not going to pitch my ideas about an 8 or 16 team playoff/tournament. I am not going to degrade the BCS.  Well, I might do this a little. I want to have a discussion about the word “playoff” and/or “tournament” and the idea of either term not being part of college football vocabulary.

Final thoughts on 2006: Story of the year

As I await the New Year from the seclusion of the Colorado Rockies, without television or radio, although with wireless internet and my laptop, I figure that I might as well look for the story of the year.

I’ve heard George Mason’s run to the final four mentioned, I’ve heard Tiger’s resurgence, I’ve heard steroids in baseball, no steroids in baseball, and steroids in the Tour de France. But none of those are the story.

Dissecting the Kansas City Chiefs Part I

 By: Jarred Peine

It’s the end of the season as we know it. Heading into Week 17 the Kansas City Chiefs(8-7) square off against the Jacksonville Jaguars(8-7) at Arrowhead Stadium. Both teams playoffs hopes remain alive, but the NFL gods will have to shine on them if there season is going to continue past this week. The Chiefs will need to win, and then start scoreboard watching in hopes the Denver Broncos(9-6), Cincinnati Bengals(8-7), and Tennessee Titans(8-7) all lose there respective games. In all reality, the true Kansas City fans know that if their team receives a wild card birth they will lose on the road in the playoffs. Theirs loses on the road at Cleveland and Miami proved they are not a Super Bowl contender. The ability to close games on the road have plagued the Chiefs all season and will not change in the postseason. So let’s take a look of off season moves the chiefs must make to be a contender.

Taylor- Not Merriman- Is Sending The Wrong Message

I’ve heard a lot of things recently about the NFL defensive MVP.

What kind of message are you sending to kids by giving a steroid user the MVP?

Ahh yes.. but you aren’t sending the wrong message when a guy like Shawne Merriman wins the award. You might even be sending the right one.

I know I’ve been gone for a while and I haven’t updated this series of articles as I originally intended to, but that’s what happens when you become a staff writer for a major newspaper.  But I haven’t forgotten my roots, so I’m back and ready to roll for the good people of SportsColumn.com.

AN NFL TV GUIDE

TV and pro football aren’t always the perfect mix they appear to be.

In its more than 65 years of marriage to television, the backlash of the NFL’s decision to move the Green Bay – Chicago game on New Year’s Eve from day to night is yet another in a long line of slipups and mistakes.  Errors in judgement appear to be inevitable at least every few years in this relationship.  That it’s happened once again is, if nothing else, a sign of normality given the times.

Hope Springs Eternal In The Bay

by Trevor Freeman

On December 25th I was talking with my grandpa at the Freeman Family Christmas party.  In his late 80s, he is suffering from lung cancer (despite the fact he never smoked) and does not resemble the lean, former collegiate track star I had always been used to.  A lifelong San Francisco Giants fan he yearns for the World Series title that has eluded the cursed franchise since they left New York.  The subject of Barry Zito came up and his exact words were, “If we could get him, then we’d have a real shot.”

Just Call Me Captain Optimistic

I’m trying to be optimistic. It’s my New Year’s Resolution. I look around at the disaster zone that is Philadelphia sports and I say to myself, there HAS to be something positive that I can take from this mess. I MUST find something to put my energy into. So I’ve made a list of some of the things I’m thankful for in the sporting world of Philadelphia.
