Derrick Thomas a Hall of Famer for his work off the field, too

Let me level with you: I don’t know how to start this article. I don’t. I’ve thought about it all week, and you know, I just could not figure it out. Maybe I’m just not good enough at what I do, or maybe I’m just not good enough yet, either way, I couldn’t figure it out.

How do you capsule in 1,000 words a life that has reached out beyond words and touched lives totaling 1,000 times that many words? How do you do that without risking understating his impact or, even worse, offending? It’s not something we as journalists want to do, but have to do. But enough about me. Onto you.

Take a Seat on the Bus

True story: Early fall of 1990, I was anxiously awaiting for my very first day of Kindergarten. My mom had picked out my clothes the night before; nothing too catchy, just a conservative yellow polo complemented by plaid shorts that barely reached my mid thigh. My blue and white Velcro shoes were strapped up tight and I was ready to go. I have had all summer to practice the ABC’s, touch up on my artwork, and re-read the ever so challenging rules of kickball. My dad took dozens of pictures of me and I stood there smiling, completely oblivious, not knowing that these photos would come back to haunt me at numerous family reunions and neighborhood get-togethers. My book bag was zipped up and I skipped outside and waited for the big yellow bus to come pick me up and take me to school. And I waited. And I waited some more. Nothing.  I sat down to wait a little longer. Still nothing. It was my first day of school, and my bus had forgotten to pick me up.

By now, most of you are wondering why I am telling this story. For one, it’s damn sad and may increase my chances of getting sympathy from numerous amounts of females. But this is not my main objective. My goal is to explain the similarity between my first day of school, with the first few weeks of the regular season for teams like the Rams, Bengals, Browns, Chiefs and Lions.

The Risk of Green

I just don’t understand it. What is this absurd fascination with Trent Green? Why would any team want a 37 year old quarterback who just came off an injury plagued season, and is clearly on the downside of his career? Not just that, but Miami has a very capable Daunte Culpepper shaking his head in confusion, unable to understand why this is happening. There is no real reason to shake the confidence of Culpepper just to MAYBE get one more solid year out of Green. I mean, when was the last time Green led a team to a Super Bowl, anyway? And all of a sudden he’s the savior. If anything, Kansas City cannot wait for this trade to happen. They probably could care less what they get, as well. They’re just trying to hide their giddiness for their quarterback of the future; Brodie Croyle.

The Real State of the NHL

Gary Bettman has given his 2007 edition of the state of the National Hockey League. In it, were some very interesting statements, and like any other good Public Relations person, he tried to put the best face forward of the NHL. While he didn’t out rightly lie, he did mislead people just slightly.

The Road to Super Bowl XLI: In-Depth Analysis

By David J. Cohen

The playoffs have a different feel this year than in recent years. In those years there were clearly defined contenders and pretenders for the championship. However, this year the playoffs seem truly wide open. This year the playoffs are centered on three inexperienced quarterbacks: Tony Romo of the Cowboys, Rex Grossman of the Bears, and Philip Rivers of the Chargers. If they can rise to the occasion their teams will make the runs expected of them. If they falter, proven veterans will seize the day.

The NFC is the perfect example of what parity has done to the league. It has made teams competitive which have been awful the year before. With parity, you can go through Hurricane Katrina one year and earn a bye the next. Parity has also made mediocrity a premium. The 8-8 Giants are in the playoffs, and teams like Green Bay were still in it going into the last week of the regular season. The playoff picture in the NFC is murky, with no clear cut choice. With that said, here is how it should play out.

 By: Jarred Peine

Both teams playoffs hopes remain alive, but the NFL gods will have to shine on them if there season is going to continue past this week. The Chiefs will need to win, and then start scoreboard watching in hopes the Denver Broncos(9-6), Cincinnati Bengals(8-7), and Tennessee Titans(8-7) all lose there respective games. In all reality, the true Kansas City fans know that if their team receives a wild card birth they will lose on the road in the playoffs. Theirs loses on the road at Cleveland and Miami proved they are not a Super Bowl contender. The ability to close games on the road have plagued the Chiefs all season and will not change in the postseason. So let’s take a look of off season moves the chiefs must make to be a contender.

In the NFL- Clark Kent is every team’s Superman!

By all sports standards they are underpaid, undervalued, underappreciated, and totally unprepared.  The average man called upon at a moments notice to do the heroic feats of a superhero. Completely anonymous to many fans and media, yet expected to perform as a superstar.  No other position in sports demands more for less.  These masked men are football’s backup quarterbacks.

It was a strange way to end a strange week. In a set of NFL games that saw three teams get their first win this season, it appeared that one of two unbeatens was about to taste defeat.
