Phil Jackson Says He’ll Coach Knicks if They Fill Team with Superstars First

[Ed: Another great article from The Sports Pickle. Check out more stories like this at Sportspickle.com.]

Former Lakers and Bulls coach Phil Jackson said on Monday that he would consider taking the Knicks’ head coaching position if team president Isiah Thomas offers it to him. But Jackson said he would have one demand of the organization.

NFL Conference Championship Game Picks

Last week was either a great week for the Sportscolumn crew or an easy week to pick. All favorites won. A couple of us (Milehigh, Vegas) picked the Colts in the upset and were summarily beat down. This week, we all agree on the winners, with the exception of Guru Ganu, who has had his brain turned to mush by either the cold weather in Boston or too much Sportscenter.

Dr. TO or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Eagles

“We are going to the Super Bowl, so don’t even doubt it,” injured Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens said yesterday. “I’ve never felt so confident in my entire career than how I felt this past Sunday. When I walked into that locker room and saw those guys – saw that as happy as they were that they knew they still had business to take care of – that let me know right there we’ll be in Jacksonville come Feb. 6. There is no doubt in my mind.

NFL Divisional Round Playoff Picks

Last week, the Sportscolumn crew went 7-9, dragged down by Mile High’s 0-4, who did just about as good as the Broncos last weekend so he’ll be looking to make a comeback. There were 3 upsets in the first round but nobody got all three upsets right. This week, the Sportscolumn panel is agreeing on the first three games – take the Falcons, Steelers and Eagles. It’s fitting that the only game in dispute looks like it’s going to be the closest game all weekend.

Important Notice: NFL Announces Rule Change on Field Goals

Unbeknownst to me, the NFL competition committee has apparently changed the rules on field goals. In order to take the pressure off kickers and head coaches, the NFL has agreed that if a kicker misses the kick on third down, he is able to retry it on fourth down.

Week 17 NFL Picks

Well folks, after a long season, it all comes down to week 17. Milehigh and I are battling it out for the top picks champion. A late season surge by Milehigh (and collapse by yours truly) has Milehigh in the lead by 4 games. But there are plenty of games in contention this week. On the flip side, Guru Ganu and Mr. X (retiring after this season) are battling to get out of the cellar. We’ll be picking the playoffs as well but for now, let’s get the regular season sorted out.

Here we go with the Week 17 Picks. If you want to see how well the experts here at SC stack up against the competition, check out this excel file.

Boycott Madden 2006 Petition

Forget the war in Iraq. Forget global warming. I finally found something worth creating a petition for. On Monday December 13th, EA Sports announced that they signed an exclusive 5 year licensing agreement with the NFL and the Players Union. Essentially, what this does is prevent anyone else from creating any football games except for EA. Say good bye to competition.

Portrait of an Artest as a Hood

By now, you’ve read all about the basketball game that broke out during a brawl at the Palace in Detroit. It’s the number one topic at every water cooler this morning and the leading story on the evening news, not just the sports segment. If peace in the middle east was achieved over the weekend, no one would know about it as we’re all too busy offering opinions on what happened Friday night.

But, as the saying goes, there’s three sides to every story: yours, mine, and what’s caught on videotape. So, let’s go to the tape.

Week 10 NFL Picks

Last week was a tough week for us here at SC. We hovered right at .500 for the first time all season. Bills over Jets? Bears over Giants? Who knew. We promise to do better this week… unless of course, we don’t.

Here we go with the Week 10 Picks. If you want to see how well the experts here at SC stack up against the competition, check out this excel file.

Week 9 NFL Power Rankings

What a week in the NFL. Things are so tightly bunched up in the upper third of the rankings that we don’t know what to make of it. Just when you think a team is approaching elite, they pitch some stinkers. And we don’t know whether San Diego and Seattle are for real. The bottom of the rankings aren’t much easier. Think about it, is Oakland better than New Orleans? Who knows? Who cares?
