2009 NFL Week 8 Picks and Podcast

We’re about halfway through the season and only a handful of teams are showing themselves to be legitimate contenders for the ring. Meanwhile, the dregs of the league are so bad that Vegas took a bath last weekend because they simply can’t put a spread big enough to cover the ineptitude of the Browns, Rams, Chiefs, Raiders, and Bucs. The featured games this week are Denver at Baltimore, NY Giants at Philly, Minnesota at Green (I think a former player is going back to Lambeau this week or something.) and Atlanta at New Orleans.

Locks of the Week

Vegas Vinny: (3-4, Balance =$730) I was reading an article about how Vegas has been losing so much money because the inferior teams aren’t even staying competitive with the top tier teams. They can’t put up lines high enough and they will never take a game off the board like they do with college football.

This week, the closest thing we have to an Ohio State vs New Mexico State game in the NFL is the Chargers vs the the Raiders. The Chargers are going to make this a track meet — with only their players running. Remember, this is a Raiders team that lost to a reeling NY Jets team at home. The only concern I have about this game is the Chargers looking ahead to the New York Giants. But SD always dominates the Raiders and I expect another benching of JaMarcus Leaf this week. I’ll put $55 to win $50 on the Chargers (-17) and get off the schneid.

BostonMac: (6-1, Balance = $1,395) I love the revenge factor in the Packers-Vikings game… but not from Brett Favre’s angle. (Or even from Ryan Longwell’s angle, as Vin pointed out on the podcast.) The last time these two teams played, the Vikes sacked Aaron Rodgers 8 times and forced him to turn the ball over twice, while Favre stayed off his back and held onto the ball. That’s going to change in the cold November night at Lambeau. The Packers new 3-4 defense hasn’t given up a touchdown since Week 4 against these same Vikings. That streak will end this week, but Rodgers will show why he’s the top-rated passer in the NFC with at least a one-touchdown win over Minnesota. I’ll put $55 to win $50 on GREEN BAY (-3.5), and I hope to continue my hot streak after squeaking out a win with the Saints last week.

RJ: (2-5, Balance = $875) Where to begin with the Bears and Browns and their losing by a combined 63 points last week? Here’s a better idea: let’s just leave it at that and never speak of it again. But alas, the Football Gods have smiled upon Lovie, Cutler and the Chicago fans by sending the woeful Browns to town. I’ll go with the Bears performance being somewhat of an abberation, as opposed to Cleveand’s Every Given Sunday approach. As long as a desperate Chicago(-14)team doesn’t fall into the Browns’ quagmire of turnovers, missed tackles and general Mangina-ness, the two touchdowns should be easy to cover. $55/50

I don’t know why, but I’ve never felt more proud of a pick than Rams over Lions. If only it had stayed 3-2.

Oh and Ted Ginn is still useless, two kickoff returns or no kickoff returns. He doesn’t belong on the field otherwise. All he’s done is ruin two covers for me the last two weeks.

Exactly. I didn’t even remotely lament leaving Ginn on the fantasy bench. The thought of playing him makes my head hurt. I don’t even know why I haven’t cut him yet. I think I’m doing the rest of the league a favor by not having them decide whether to sign him or not.

I’m so sick of these idiots on TV climbing up his jock all day today saying how he has redeemed himself, he was worth the pick, and my favorite “all he does is win.” Or is that Vince Young? Or Brett Favre? I got my most annoying NFL players mixed up today.

And Ryan, sorry for your rough week ATS. Vin, double check and make sure you didn’t mix up mine and Ryans picks

Worst ATS week showing ever in the history of this podcast.

I’m still on the schneid for my locks though.
