NFL Week 8 Picks October 30 2005

Beating the ESPN experts is becoming pretty commonplace around here. Even though we were dragged down by Trevor’s 8-6 record, we managed to beat ESPN with a total of .696 vs their .640. Also, Boston Mac was able to get higher than anyone else with a 12-2 record. This week, it’s either Teri or Vegas Vinny’s turn.

Locks of the Week

Vegas Vinny: When up against a good team last week, the Bengals froze up. Lucky for them, Green Bay is not a good team. They will rebound this week to put a hurting on the Packers to soothe their bruised egos courtesy of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Green Bay has lost their offensive line, top 2 running backs, and most of their wide recieving corps. Meanwhile, their defense has been nothing to write home about either, giving up over 200 yards a game passing against very mediocre teams. Carson and Chad will run it up this Sunday. Expect a huge blowout and take the Bengals (-9).

Teri Berg: On paper, the Chargers are looking roughed up while KC’s a game and a half up on SD in the NFC West. But San Diego has the No. 1 toughest schedule in the league, while the Chiefs haven’t done much more than lounge around this season — losing to 2 quality teams (Denver & Philly) and only beating one decent team (Washington). Trent Green is having his worst season since his first in Kansas City in 2001, completing just 58 percent of his passes (down 8 percent from last season) and sitting on an 81.6 passer rating, the third lowest of his 12-year career. What’s worse, considering KC’s limited WR corps, is that Tony Gonzalez is having the worst year of his 9-year career. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson are pretty much it for Dick Vermeil. The Chargers, though, are the whole package (well, except for their coach): A decent year for Brees, an improved receiver corps, and LT pretty much on a tear. These guys are better than their 3-4 record, and should put pressure on KC in that division. Chargers (-6)

BostonMac: The Giants impressed me last week, showing a lot of poise in coming back in the final minutes against the Broncos. Their defense still is suspect, and the Skins offense should put up some points, especially considering Clinton Portis ran roughshod over the Jints in ’04. This year, though, the Giants have one of the best offenses in football, one that will overtake the Redskins somewhat fraudulent defense. I think Eli Manning is a Pro Bowl quarterback this year, especially with the shoddy QB play throughout most of the NFC. Last week, the Giants showed they were for real with a tough win over a good Denver team, and this week they will keep the wins going. NEW YORK GIANTS (-2.5) over Washington.

Trevor F: The New York Giants cover that 2 1/2 against the Washington Redskins in
honor their owner Wellington Mara who passed away this week. Mara, an
alumnus of the greatest University on the planet, was a true gentleman and
is somebody whom the players loved. Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey even
visited with him this Monday before he passed. Look for the New York
Football Giants to come out and win this game 27-17.

G-men I agree. The Giants offense is explosive downfield with Shockey and Burress as great weapons downfield. An added aspect of Burress and Shockey drawing the LBs out of the box gives a very nice option of Barber up the middle or to the left, which is the common place that Burress lines up at. I have them coming up with a big W in the Meadowlands on Sunday.

Wash-ing the Giants It’s true that in adding Burress to the mix, the Giants’ offense is more varied and explosive. AND given that teams are still thinking Manning’s too young/inexperienced to be good, the Giants get that extra element where everyone is still underestimating them.

But the ‘Skins’ defense is pretty fearsome, especially since Taylor’s on a tear and Arrington’s back and gunning to prove himself to DC Gregg Williams. For my pick’s sake, I’m hoping Williams takes a lesson from the Broncos of last week, and doesn’t go blitz-wacky — which only plays into what’s proven already to be Manning’s talent for on-the-fly big plays.
