NFL Week 1 Power Rankings September 13 2005

Week 1 of the NFL season is the toughest to do the Power Rankings. Do the Saints belong above the Eagles? Or even Minnesota? Are Power Rankings how well a team has done in the past week(s) or how well they’ll do in the future? I subscribe to a mix of the two.

The overriding theme for this week is: it’s a long season. We’ll reward teams for winning on opening weekend, but that doesn’t mean they’re in the top of the class. On the flip side, one loss doesn’t mean you’re out of playoff contention either. Unless you lose to the Niners, in which case you deserve to be ranked last.

Rank (Pv) Team Record Comment
1 (-) 1-0 All the ridiculous commercials aside, the Champs are the best team in the land until someone proves otherwise.
2 (-) 1-0 Good pitching stops good hitting right? Not if your clutch hitters are Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison
3 (-) 1-0 Did someone (me) say Sophmore slump? I guess the perfect passer rating is the anti-slump. We’ll see how Ben does against Houston… especially with New England looming on the horizon.
4 (-) 1-0 You guys might think I’m crazy for ranking them this high but I love that defense and JP Losman is no Kyle Orton.
5 (-) 1-0 Boy that Ron Mexico sure is a fantastic halfback. Don’t let Madden’s usual hyperbole about Vick fool you, they won because of defense and Warrick Dunn.
6 (-) 1-0 They kept a pretty good Jets team scoreless for 57 minutes. I’d say that D proved what it set out to prove in their first game.
7 (-) 1-0 Everyone is expecting Carson Palmer to have a break out year. I realize it was the Browns but 26/34 for 280 yards, 2 TDs and an INT is a pretty good start.
8 (-) 1-0 All of the sudden, Brian Griese doesn’t look like the chump he was in Denver. And maybe San Francisco got the wrong Alex Smith.
9 (-) 1-0 Nice start to the Parcells-Bledsoe II era. Who would’ve thunk that Drew “The Statue” Bledsoe would have a better game than Julius Jones.
10 (-) 1-0 Looks like the kid from Goodburger slimmed down and learned how to run an offense. Good showing by Leftwich and Julio Franco Jimmy Smith
11 (-) 1-0 It’s almost unfair to line up Mike Williams, Roy Williams, and Charles Rogers against any secondary. Joey Harrington better step it up this year. Those three WRs could make Kyle Boller look good. Well, maybe that was going too far.
12 (-) 0-1 Yes, I know they looked terrible on MNF but would you pick against them? Trotter for MVP.
13 (-) 0-1 I didn’t realize the SI jinx worked this early. If Philly is at 12, then logically, Carolina should be right behind them cause they came into the season 1 and 2 in the NFC.
14 (-) 0-1 As always, their defense gets them the respect. Kyle Boller or Anthony Wright? Does it matter? It’s all about Chris McAllister and Ed Reed. (And not the most overhyped defensive player in the game.)
15 (-) 0-1 I know the Randy Ratio didn’t work but at .000 it really doesn’t work. Culpepper, you better start start proving yourself or the whispering will start.
16 (-) 1-0 Coughlin is right, there was no way that team was going to lose on that date. Unfortunately, there are plenty of more dates coming up and the Giants can’t play with that emotion and, more importantly, against Arizona, every week.
17 (-) 0-1 I know this is way too early but if the Chargers miss the playoffs by 1 game, who is to blame? Antonio Gates or the Front Office? Cause with Gates in the red zone, they win that game.
18 (-) 1-0 Outside of Carolina fans, was anyone rooting against the Saints this weekend? Win was pure emotion but that tank runs dry pretty damn quickly.
19 (-) 0-1 There’s no shame in losing to the Patriots on season opening night. There is however shame in that excuse they call pass defense.
20 (-) 1-0 I certainly don’t expect them to stay even this high in the rankings but if you can win with Gus Frerotte… man, Saban is really good.
21 (-) 0-1 At some point, shouldn’t the Walrus take a page from Mooch’s playbook and ask for a decent WR?
22 (-) 0-1 They ran into one of the best defenses in the league. I expect Carr and Davis to pick it up…ahhh crap, Pittsburgh is next up. I guess we’ll have to wait till after the bye week.
23 (-) 0-1 You play the game to win! You do not play the game to get blown out at Arrowhead stadium! 20 rushes for 57 yards? Why is Eddie George masquerading as Curtis Martin?
24 (-) 0-1 You know the problem with Teflon? After a while, it starts to flake off and you realize that a good old fashioned cast iron skillet does the job better.
25 (-) 1-0 Before you Skins fans start crying about being ranked this low, think about who you beat – a team that recently had Chad Hutchinson as their starting QB.
26 (-) 1-0 It’s a whole new attitude in San Francisco this year! They could double their win total. To 4.
27 (-) 0-1 Hey Suzy Kolber, how’s that fantasy football pick working out for you? Well, as long as he’s having fun out there.
28 (-) 0-1 I usually ignore it when a commentator slobbers all over a player but that Dansby kid is really damn good. Same cannot be said about Kurt Warner.
29 (-) 0-1 The only reason why they are ranked ahead of Cleveland is McNair vs Dilfer. But really, at the bottom of the barrell, who cares what garbage smells worse.
30 (-) 0-1 You know, if they had Kellen Winslow, they win that game. I’m just kidding. I just wanted to bring up the Shrubbery Killer.
31 (-) 0-1 I say something about how bad they are but really, what’s the point. It’d just be cruel.
32 (-) 0-1 If you lose to the Niners, you deserve to be dead last in the rankings. FireMikeMartz.com going once, going twice…

hmm Explain to me why the Vikings are at number 15?
These are power rankings correct? Maybe if these where rankings on where they should be if they played to their potential 15th would be an appropriate spot, but they dont belong above teams that played far better than they did.

The Saints belong in the top ten… Once again these are power rankings and the Saints beat the Panthers (who were picked by SI to win the superbowl!). They belong much higher than 18th

“All of the sudden, Brian Griese doesn’t look like the chump he was in Denver. And maybe San Francisco got the wrong Alex Smith.” Well Griese didnt look that great either, I understand where they are in the power rankings, but griese is still a chump. Two interceptions and 78 QB rating doesn’t make you “all of the sudden not a chump”.

Lastly you have Jets ranked 23rd, They should be in the last 5, Chad Pennington fumbled the ball like 6 times!

Another thing is you have some teams ranked higher than the teams they got beat by, once again this is a power ranking.

you think higher or lower? i didn’t want to be too much of a homer. I think the Eagles will go right back into Top 5 with a serious ass whooping of the Niners.

Griese well, the stats from the Minny game doesn’t make him a superstar but the way that Griese got ran out of town in Denver would make you think he was Quincy Carter.

Do you honestly think any of the teams below them would beat the Eagles next week?

Funny enough, ESPN had Eagles at #5.
