These Cleats Are Made For Runnin’

And that’s just what they’ll do. One of these days these cleats are gonna run all over you. That’s going to be the motto of some of the fast college football players this season. Some of the best playmakers are the ones that can make plays with their feet. There are some guys that really stick out to me and to other college football fans.Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio State University, WR/KR

Ted Ginn is one of the most well known quicksters. Ginn didn’t get to many touches last year but when he did, he made it count. Ohio State used Ginn horizontally and vertically which kept opposing teams on their toes. If he is given room, he will make you sorry you did. He will be given more touches this year and is specifically mentioned in a lot of Big Ten game plans. He got better and better last year and is expected to be big for Ohio State this season. He is definitely one of the fastest players in college football and arguably, the fastest.

Devin Hester, Miami (FL), CB/WR/KR

Hester is not only one of the fastest players; he is one of the best athletes in college football. Larry Coker plays him everywhere. Wide Receiver, Cornerback, Punt Returner, Kick Returner, he does it all. He is no doubt one of the playmakers on Miami. And the best part is how quick he can get to top speed. You give him 5 steps and he’ll burn you. Hester has been working hard on being the best two-way player in college football. He could log more snaps then any `cane ever and that could be what Miami’s opponents are most afraid of.

Reggie Bush, USC, RB/KR

Almost everybody knows Reggie Bush by now. He helped lead USC to a National Championship last year and put himself into Heisman candidacy. Almost every opponent of Southern California has him in their game plan and for a good reason; His ability to break a game wide open. He is fast, elusive, versatile. Every time he touches the ball there is a risk of him scoring a touchdown. He is played running back but is used as a receiver and returns kicks and punts which makes him so useful to USC. Bush’s speed and athletic ability makes him a very dangerous college football player.

Vince Young, Texas, QB

Vince Young had a stunning performance in the Rose Bowl last season. His ability run out of the pocket when the play broke down didn’t go unnoticed. Vince put the team on his shoulders and won the Rose Bowl for Texas.  Vince is big (6’5”, 233) and fast (4.5) which makes a lethal combination. He’s able to run through guys and make them look silly. Vince has worked on his passing skills which will make him a dual threat this season. If Vince can excel at both running and passing, Texas can contend for a National Championship.
Steve Breaston, Michigan, WR/KR

Oh Stevie Breaston, the poor man’s Ginn. Breaston is a lot like Ginn, a tad bit slower but Breaston is great receiver. Breaston was set back last year because of a broken finger but this year he’s healthy and ready to run. Breaston has great vision and can catch the football. Because of his speed, Breaston is a major threat down the field and can return kicks very well. He is going to be taking over Braylon Edwards’ spot and it is going to be interesting how Breaston will react. With his eyes and his legs, look for Steve Breaston to really show of his talent.

Marcus Vick, Virginia Tech, QB

Marcus Vick has been quite a story. Him having legal problems, getting suspended from school, having the famous surname and all that jazz. This year Marcus Vick is going to be starter which is really exciting for all those Virginia Tech fans out there. Marcus Vick is a lot like his brother Michael. He’s got the speed to blow people away and is elusive enough to get away from tacklers. He is also a good passer which makes him just as dangerous of a player. He’s around the same size as Mike so we are going to see some similarities between them; including their playmaking skills. With a surname like Vick, he has to be good.

You are going to see a lot of these players making big plays over the course of the season. Most of them making plays with their feet. It is going to be interesting how each player helps his team. But you can be sure most of it should be in a positive way.

Who was the first to sing that song? Without cheating, can you name the daughter of a very, very famous singer who released this song to #1 in 1966 (I cheated to look up when the song was written, but that does not count)?

I’ll give you a hint:

Jessica Simpson was not even the fifth person to do it (actually, somewhere around #10!).

Another hint:

Her father once called Rock and Roll “The most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear.”

Good luck!!!

tell him nice job I new that because I remember the Billy Ray Cyrus version and I looked it up a long time ago to find out who originally sang it (since it said copyright 1966 on the lyrics).

Good job.

pub please i know i go to a small conferenced school, but i have a beef.  the beef is not with you, just with everyone.  i go to north texas, we have the last two ncaa div. 1 rushing champions on the same team this year.  no one mentions them on any watch lists, pre-season all america, nothing.  its quite sad.  we had a write up in usa today last week, but thats the ONLY pub these two have gotten.  Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas will both be great, and their careers do not stop at the college level.  expect a column soon.

sorry I’ve noticed them although I haven’t said anything about them. That’s a great tandem and your lucky to have them.

Jamario Thomas I have him ranked as the third best RB in college football. A tremendous back. I still think the team is lousy though and I have them pegged to go 7-4 (7-0), before winning against Tulane in the New Orleans bowl (5 in a row….). Patrick Cobbs is pretty darn good too.

my list of RBs

  1. Reggie Bush – University of Southern California
  2. Mike Hart – University of Michigan-Ann Arbour
  3. Jamario Thomas – University of North Texas
  4. Adrian Peterson – Oklahoma University
  5. Gerald Riggs, Jr. – University of Tennessee

Bush is clearly the best. Mike Hart was a better back last year as a frosh than Adrian Peterson and while Peterson was getting the hype, Hart was quietly leading the ground game for Michigan.

Now, the main argument for Peterson over Hart is that Hart had the best wideout in college football (Braylon Edwards) to help open up the running game, which is true. But Hart still had to perform, and he did, leading Big Blue to the Rose Bowl.

Riggs is a little overrated, but I think that he still is in the top 5.

Jamario Thomas single handedly won the Sun Belt for UNT last year despite how pathetic the defense was (I was shocked at how terrible UNT’s defense was when I watched the UL-M game and they surrendered like 31 points). If I remember right, only once did they NOT surrender 20 points, that coming in the final regular season game. I could be wrong as I only saw 3 games all year (2 on game plan or regional FSN and the New Orleans bowl).

Anyway, that is my list.

thanks thanks for the respect of our highly underrated players.  we will be on espn2 against Troy in October, be sure to check it out.  Our defense is worse this year probably, but Patrick and Jamario should be extremely fun to watch.
