QUICK TAKES – August 26- 2004

Casual thoughts I was contemplating while noticing how the letters of Doug Mientkiewicz’s last name wrap almost 180 degrees around his number, and wondering what would happen if an athlete had such a long last name that it made a full circle around his back…

At Random: A slanted view on the week in Sports.

It’s time once again to look back on the week in sports through the eyes of Daniel Collins, host of “Sports Propaganda” on NBC Radio. This week, the Olympic games, the Texas Rangers, Willis McGahee and Kellen Winslow: Version Two are all subjects for debate.

Jennie Finch vs Maria Sharapova

As the Olympic Games begin, there are two events we are focused on. #1 is the Men’s basketball team and whether they’ll be able to bring home the gold. #2 is, simply, Jennie Finch. Not USA Womens Softball. Just Jennie Finch.

Call me shallow but when it comes to womens sports, the first thing I want to know is, “is she hot?”… quickly followed by “is she hotter than the last flavor of the month”. (Terrell Owens has never said “If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat” about me.)

The last hot athlete we had on SC was Maria Sharapova. So the obvious question is this: Jennie Or Maria?

Florida was good to me

In my first months writing for this website I was praying for a good story. I’d wake up, turn on sportscenter, check the local paper, check magazines and find that nothing was going on in the sports world. Oh sure, there was little things. I wrote on The Bobcats first draft (wow, that was memorable), on Steve Nash to Phoenix, On Denver attracting superstar talent, and Coach K dissing the Lakers. BUT WHERE WAS THE BIG STORY?!?!?!? It seemed the sports world had gone on vacation. So i joined it.

MINI-TAKES – August 9- 2004

By Ryan McGowan

Quite a few topics that merit mentioning have arisen in the past week, but I don’t think any of them are worthy of an entire column, so I have decided to sell out and write a condensed "short takes" column.  If I like it, maybe I’ll turn this into a weekly or semi-weekly feature here on SportsColumn, the Revolution in Sports Journalism.  Hey, if it works for Bill Simmons and Bill Reynolds of the Providence Journal, then why can’t it work for me, right?

The Problem of THAT DAD

By Ryan McGowan

Every kid who grew up playing sports knew at least one of them, if not more.  They are all over youth sports, as much a part of the landscape as concession stands and old men with fungo bats wearing tight sweatpants.  They might be a bigger threat to amateur sports than drugs, steroids, participation fees, and youth soccer combined.  One of them who achieved prominence this week turned out to be a rather famous athlete in his own right.  When I was growing up in North Attleboro, if you were one of these people, you were known simply as "THAT DAD."
