The Tempest

Of course it matters. This is Hank Aaron we’re talking about here, enduring proof that greatness can be discovered within consistency, Hank Aaron, class act, a hero in this and future generations, transcendent of the vicious scorn that compromised his time. This is Hank Aaron, baseball’s all-time home run king, a living legend.

This is his mark, what he earned. That is the symbol of a bygone era, what could have existed that never came to pass, what should have been but never was.

It’s an idea, a fantasy, for those who wouldn’t quit dreaming.

MLB Power Rankings for July 15- 2007

Just out of the gate from the All-Star break, the Cubs have been hot, jumping up two spots by winning their last three games and seven out of their last ten, while in the American League the Athletics have pretty much done the opposite, losing seven in a row and dropping four spots.

The playoff races are starting to shape up and has the makings of a very exciting summer, with 14 teams within five games of the division lead or the wild card.

MLB Power Rankings for July 11- 2007

The American League has continued its dominance in the All-Star Game, going 10-0 with one tie over the last 11 contests, and they continue to dominate the Power Rankings as well, with the top four teams all coming from the junior circuit.

In other news, it appears Mark Buerhle will officially not be leaving Chicago, and All-Star MVP Ichiro Suzuki could be on the verge of signing a monster contract worth about $100 million, that would make him one of the ten highest paid players per season, in the game.

Two Sides to an Even Coin

On Sunday, while at work, I was frantically looking for news on where impending NHL free agents had signed and was hoping to hear something like “the Oilers have signed Chris Drury” or something resembling that.I didn’t, but I heard Oilers news of a different kind. “The Edmonton Oilers have traded Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul to the Philedalphia Flyers for defenseman Joni Pittkanen and forward Goeff Sanderson, plus a 2009 3rd round draft choice,” was what the announcer on TSN was reporting. At first I was angry about my team trading away its captain and perhaps the toughest guy in the league for an unproven defender, who was -22 last season. But after composing my thoughts, and my tears, it wasn’t that bad. Kevin Lowe and Paul Holmgren have pulled off, in my mind, one of the most even trades in modern NHL history.

Mr. 10-000

The All Star break is here, and a much needed rest is given to the hard working ball players in the MLB, but for the Philadelphia Phillies, it is only delaying the inevitable. With their next loss, the Phillies will have 10,000 in their history.

In fact, no team in any sport across the world has every sucked more than the good old fightin’ Phills. During its 125 years of existence, the club has one world series title, that in 1980.

Matt Who?

Matt Holliday, the man nobody knows about, had his coming out party yesterday in the home run derby. Although he did not win the derby, Holliday certainly made a name for himself. He was also one of two Rockies to be selected to compete in this evening’s All Star Game, where the best in the business lace `em up for one big showdown. But why has this man’s achievements gone unnoticed?

The Open Market

Boy, the NBA doesn’t rest, does it? First the NBA Finals, then the Draft, and now free agency is well under way. Not too far after we’ll actually be seeing the younger guys in action in summer leagues, and then only a few months before it all starts over again. But hold your horses. We’re still in the free agency phase, and there’s still a lot of work to do. So here is who’s left, and where I think they’ll be going:

It’s July, everybody. So, that means fireworks, jubilation, and well, that it’s almost August. Which means the NFL season is inching that much closer, and your preparation for your fantasy football draft probably has you pulling hair out or paying that much more attention to ESPN News.
