The Heisman Trophy may be the most prestigious award in all of sports. It is given to the top college football player in the country, and it is an honor that will last a lifetime. There are many guys this year that have a shot at winning it, but there are a few that should be considered favorites. Here are my top 10 candidates to take the hardware home.
Stay Home Kenny
Kenny Rogers created a media fire storm once he Hulk Hogan-ed little Larry Rodriguez. Only a week after this incident Rogers was selected by AL Manager Terry Francona to represent the American League in the All-Star Game. A lot has happen in the last week or so, and now lets take some time to figure out whether Rogers really should be playing in Detroit on July 12th.
50 Of the Biggest Late-Round Steals Since 1970
By Adam Nelson
There are tons of great NFL players that are not chosen in the draft’s first few picks- especially when it comes to wide receivers, kickers and kick returners. In fact, a majority of them were chosen during or after the fifth round. Going from latest to earliest draft position, here are 50 of the biggest draft-day steals since 1970, all taken during or after the fifth round:
MLB Power Rankings July 13 2005
Here are the power rankings after five of the top six teams in the league lost at least their last two games heading into the All-Star break. Comments and criticisms are appreciated.
It use to be that the All-Star break was a time to get your friends together and watch the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game. Today the All-Star break is about what players decided not to show up, who was snubbed, and how baseball can make more money. I miss the good old days and the ratings agree.
The A’s Roll Into the All-Star Break
by Trevor Freeman
I read the e-mails at the beginning of the year.
I listened as the talking heads disparaged them.
I shook my head when they stood at 17-32, because I knew this was a playoff caliber ballclub.
I stood up for them and kept reminding people that this team has a history of slow starts.
Last year it could have been anyone’s trophy, well except for one. And ironically the one player who had no shot of winning it was that of this year’s no. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, or otherwise known as Alex Smith. As for the others the race could have come to a coin toss it was thought to have been so close. To start off, the winner of the previous Heisman Trophy was back in contention along with his young superstar teammate. And on the other side were also two teammates in the running for the most coveted award in all of college football as far as player recognition goes. The two teams represented by the four players, respectively, were Oklahoma and Southern California. Oh yeah, and the University of Utah was also there too. But in the end USC’s quarterback Matt Leinart was the player left standing. And for the naysayers who believed that there should have been another winner Leinart proved them all wrong by having the “game of his life” in the 2005 Orange Bowl which gave his team, USC Trojans, the national championship.
ACC Preview 2005
Last year Virginia Tech made a stunning run to win the ACC championship. This year the ACC should have some more competition with the newcomers settling in and the prestigious schools getting back to their normal ways. The battle for the ACC should be really exciting this year and it looks like the teams are ready and raring to go.
MLB mid-season report
It’s been a wonderful first half of the 2005 MLB Season, and unless you’re in the NL Central, or watch baseball in Tampa Bay, Kansas City or Denver, you’ve got something to look forward to this year.
Check out what we thought of each team:
LAS VEGAS- When the Celtics’ summer league squad wiped the floor with their counterparts from Phoenix on Monday by a score of 82 to 53, it was difficult to tell whether or not it had anything to do with the superiority of the Celtic team or the vengeance of the refs. A mind-boggling 41 personal fouls were called…in the first half. For the game, there were 79 called and people all the way back at the MGM Grand could have permanent hearing damage from the constant scream of the whistles.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers, on his best behavior, said of the young, aspiring officials, “they’re still working on their game and I think it’s great. One guy, Matt [Boland], he worked last year in our league and now he’s reffing this and I think that’s great. He’s like Perk and Al.”
