Artest- Francis One of the Same

Put yourself in this position, and compare it to your current position in life, if you will: you’re making millions of dollars per year and you’re doing something you love.  Sounds like a dream right?

But, what happens when you’re not mature enough to handle the situation you’re given?  You’re given gobs of money to do what you love and make others happy in the process, but you act like you’re 5 years old?  Welcome to the worlds of Ron Artest and Steve Francis.  Perhaps they would like some cheese with that whine?

19 Years and Nothing To Show For It

I think the proper way to get this blog started off is to explain my name: WaitingForAChampionship. Therefore, because I cannot think of anything else to write, this first entry will be devoted to describing the misery I have endured for 19 years.

It’s not easy living being a Philadelphia sports fan. Sure, there have been glory years in the past, but unfortunately for me, they occurred before December 17th, 1986-a date which according to me, is probably the most important day in the last century, beating out D-Day by an impressive margin. My father raised me as an all Philadelphia sports fan- that meant rooting for the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers. God forbid I was a Celtics or Braves fan.  My mother’s contribution to my love of sports? The Kansas Jayhawks, the only team that has provided me with a championship (more on that later). As my father always says, I’m doomed to be disappointed.

No Pass for the Seahawks- Seattle’s The Team to Beat

Examining the AFC playoff picture it becomes apparent that cases can be made for each of the four remaining teams to represent the conference in the Super Bowl.  However, when looking at the NFC side there is no reason to look beyond the obvious choice.  The top-seeded Seattle Seahawks have all the necessary ingredients to reach Detroit.  If they fail to do so their season should be looked at as a disappointment.

Coach Brown Wins His 1-000th As The Streaking Knicks Win 6th Straight

2006 has been very good to the Knick so far. With a 105-94 win against the Atlanta Hawks the New York Knicks extended their winning streak to 6 games, remained undefeated in 2006 and brought Coach Brown his 1,000th career victory. Larry Brown is now 1,000-762 in 23 seasons as an NBA coach joining the likes of Lenny Wilkens, Don Nelson and Pat Riley as the only coaches to post 1,000 victory resumes. Notice a trend amongst the four? Each was the Coach of the Knicks at one point or another in their glorious careers. Brown was happy with his accomplishment, “It’s a great feeling, when you look at this league, to be in it this long, you feel lucky.” This was the Knicks first 6 game winning streak since a span ranging from 2000-2001.

Don’t Look Now- But Blue Jays Hope to Fly North In Standings

The Toronto Blue Jays are 12+ years removed from a trip to the World Series (1993).  Their heroes are long gone.  The names of Joe Carter, Pat Hentgen, and Juan Guzman are long gone.  Even Carlos Delgado left Toronto for the Florida Marlins after the 2003 season.  That marriage would last just one year.

Blue Jay fans have had to endure a long streak of subpar, losing seasons.  However, 2006 is looking brighter for the team north of the border.  2006 might just be the year that the Toronto Blue Jays fly their way back to respectability.

BCS Bowl Games Glorified College Football

After watching the four BCS bowl games this past week, I was left speechless. I was left speechless at how unbelievably nerve-wracking, exciting, entertaining, and deeply emotional these games were. Each game was close up until the very end with the exception of the ND- Ohio State game that could have easily gone the other way with one call (Ohio State fumble). I was very proud to be a college football fan.

The Letdown of Motown

They’re beyond reach now. The Detroit Pistons are off to the fastest start in team history and hold the best record in the league at 28-5. Outside of temporary lapses in defense and rebounding, Detroit is performing flawlessly and they show no signs of slowing down. With this success, many games have developed into bench showcases. The habitually censured bench has evolved and at times impressed, however, one setback remains the topic of controversy. With the second overall pick in the 2003 draft, the Pistons selected Darko Milicic, the 18-year-old Serbian phenom. His career has been anything but phenomenal. The excuses are plentiful, but their legitimacy is laughable.

Is Manning The Key To The Colts Offense?

Peyton Manning has quarterbacked the NFL’s best offense for the past seven seasons. With a football culture that extremely overvalues quarterbacks, it has been Peyton Manning who has received the abundance of credit for the Indianapolis Colts offensive success. Manning’s ability to read defenses, call audibles at the line of scrimmage, and make big plays with his arm is not in dispute.

However, Manning seems to do it with an ease not seen before in the professional game. Is Manning that much smarter than every other quarterback in NFL history? Or, is there a key, external, variable that allows Manning’s star to shine above the rest?

Why the NFL Draft Shouldn’t Be As Easy As 1-2-3

With the conclusion of the Rose Bowl and the crowning of a national champion for college football, the top selections for the upcoming NFL draft look to be getting clearer.  Players from USC and Texas (to mention the two top teams) have declared themselves eligible.  The Houston Texans have the #1 pick, with the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans follow up at #2 and #3.  But, will this order be the same?  Who will be chosen?  Why do I think that Reggie Bush will NOT be a Texan?
