From One Fan to Another

I am out of the country, but I have been reading about how at New York Met games fans are chanting, “Yankees Suck” during late innings of Met victories. First let me say that I am a proud Mets fan, but this needs to stop.

The Mets are off to an 8-1 start. Eight and one people! Their best start since the 1985 season when Dwight Gooden won the Cy Young Award. Why not celebrate that? Why do Mets fans even care about the Yankees?  To me it slightly taints the victory because we are not celebrating the players on the field

Reggie Bush the Next Antonio Gates

By David J. Cohen

The entire football world knows Reggie Bush. He is the most elusive player in the draft. He is the most promising player to come into the draft since the turn of the millennium. He is constantly compared to Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders for his effortless change of direction and vision of the football field. All of this stems from his ability as a runner. It all comes from the fact that you hold your breath every time Reggie Bush touches the ball, because you know he can score at any time.

The University of Michigan: Choke U.

Has any university’s basketball and football teams choked more often in the past few years than the University of Michigan’s?

Fed up with stats

I used to be a Bill James guy. Not anymore.

Working in the front office for my beloved Red Sox, James, who is obsessed with signing guys with high on-base percentages, is a contributing factor to why, on April 10, the Red Sox led baseball in walks.

But James’s most famous contribution to baseball is his “sabermetrical” analysis, which has popularized the use of new statistics like such as OPS(on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) to determine player value.

One Step Closer

By Billy Fellin

This title of a popular Linkin Park song is exactly where baseball and Barry Bonds are. A few years ago, all anyone could talk about is how the games would go down between the Yankees and Red Sox. Now steroids rule the cooler talk of the sports channels of the world, and I believe that it is ruining the sport. In case anyone has been missing that.

A Travesty of New Proportions

Well how about that? Time-stamped photographs and DNA evidence have apparently gotten the Duke Lacrosse players off the hook.

Adding it Up

How shortsighted is the NCAA with their Academic Percentage rate?  Almost as much as Sports Illustrated’s Frank Deford.

2006 NFL Draft Top 10: what the Insiders are missing

I need more NFL Draft analysis like Mel Kiper, Jr. needs another can of Suave Super Hold Shaping Spray.

ESPN, SI, TSN.

Cold Pizza, Rick Reilly and all “the insiders.”

Wonderlics, trendy picks and free-agent quarterbacks re-writing the April 29-30 NFL Draft in the time it takes Manny Ramirez to tie his shoes; they’re velcro.

The Wright Stuff

We often hear about players having “it.” Derek Jeter has “it”, Tom Brady has “it”, and Michael Jordan had “it.” No it’s not their athletic ability, but their unbelievable ability to lift their teams. It is unfortunate that there are so few of these players in sports, but it makes this writer thankful and more appreciative of the few that are there. Even if I am a die hard Jets and Mets fans and the sheer praising of Brady and Jeter is taking everything I can do not to throw up on my computer. I guess you have to give credit where credit is due.

The Mets have been looking for someone from their farm system to come up and lead this organization to a new level. The fans’ and the organization’s hearts have been broken by the likes of Bill Pulsipher, Greg Jeffries, Jason Isringhausen, and many others who were supposed to be “the guy,” but never panned out. Thankfully for the Mets, “the guy” has come in the form of David Wright.
