Locks of the Week

Vegas Vinny: (1-0, Balance =$1,050)Looking over this week’s schedule, nothing jumps out at me as a sure win. So I’ll keeping riding the Vikings train until it derails — in case you’re wondering, about December along with Brett Favre’s arm, but that’s a different topic. The 10 point spread is a little daunting, especially since Detroit kept it close in 2 losses to the Vikings last year.

But this is a better Vikings team with a better Adrian Peterson and less one Tavaris Jackson. If the Saints can get 157 yards passing against the Lions defense, imagine what Peterson is going to do. Add in Brett Favre’s passing ability and the growing pains of rookie QB Stafford, this has blowout written all over it. It’s hard to imagine a defense as bad in all facets of the game as the Lions’. Unless Favre has one of his 4 INT meltdown days, expect the Vikings to beat the Lions by at least 14 points and to march on towards the division title.

I’ll put $55 to win $50 on the Vikings (-10).

BostonMac: (1-0, Balance = $1,050) Some people pick locks of the week by going WITH a certain team. I like to go AGAINST certain teams, though, and right now that team is the confidence-ravaged Carolina Panthers. As I mentioned on the show, Jake Delhomme has thrown 9 INT’s and lost 2 fumbles in his last few meaningful games, and last week the Falcons looked like a legit top-of-the-league team. A lot of pundits saw this as the year that Matt Ryan has a sophomore slump, but if it happens, it’s not going to happen this week against the Panthers. I’ll put $110 to win $100 on ATLANTA (-6) to cover the spread at home.

RJ: (0-1, Balance = $945) Can’t say Denver and the Orton Express were very impressive in their win on the road against Cincinnati, but Cleveland, led by the–Quinn Cargo Shuttle(?), was downright gross-looking against in their season opener. The Browns have scored exactly one (meaningless) offensive touchdown in their last seven regular season games. The Broncos, on the other hand, have won 12 out of 13 at home in September. Another 12-7 game would be fine with me–as long as it’s not on TV. Look for Denver (-3.5) to win fairly easily; half-point be damned. 55/50.
