Locks of the Week

[Editor’s Note: This year, we’re making the Locks of the Week a little more interesting as we have a side bet amongst the four experts. The person with the most money at the end of the year in Locks betting takes home all the money. Disclaimer: The amounts discussed are for illustrative and entertainment purposes only. Vegas Vinny: Hell, I might as well use my homer card in week 1 and take the Eagles at Lambeau Field. The Packers are starting Brandon Jackson, a rookie, at RB, which allows the Eagles to key on the pass and stop Brett Favre, who really doesn’t need that much attention to be stopped anyway. Brandon Jackson will also have a tough time picking up the crazy blitzes that Jim Johnson will throw the Packers way.

On the other side of the ball, McNabb has something to prove and he always plays well with something to prove. Unless he gets injured in this game, expect the Eagles to throw all over the field with a healthy dose of Brian Westbrook on screen passes early in the game which will force the Packers to move up a safety, then it’s bomb time to Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis. I’m as confident as I can be on this game but since it’s week 1, I’ll take it easy and put $55 on the Eagles (-3) to win $50. (Balance = $1000)

BostonMac: Seattle (-6) over Tampa Bay. I think the cross-country flight from Florida to the Great Northwest is a bigger factor than a lot of people like to think. Add that to the fact that Tampa Bay is a god-awful team with a young, porous, and chemistry-less offensive line blocking for Cadillac Williams, coming off a big sophomore slump. Seattle is a team in decline, but with Shaun Alexander still pumping along and Matt Hasselbeck leading an above-average passing attack, the Hawks should have enough in the tank to easily dump the Bucs. Jon Gruden, what have you done for me lately? It’s amazing how a “genius” coach can appear to look very average when he has little talent to work with. (See: Belichick, Bill, Cleveland Browns mid-1990’s). I’m going to put $55 to win $50 on the Seahawks. (Balance = $1000)

Trevor F: The Titans are getting 6.5 against the David Garrard led Jaguars which means for an unprecendented 9th straight week over two seasons it looks like I will be taking the Titans again this week. My goodness. I think
Vegas is trying to finance my alcohol habit. In case everybody missed the gravy train last year, the Titans covered every game but the last one against New England down the stretch of the season. (Balance = $1000)

RJ Warner: The Bills have a chance to be this year’s Jets. It’s not entirely imposssible to think Buffalo can finish second behind New England and maybe earn a wild card. They lost a few key players (Willis McGahee, London Fletcher), but were they really key to a team that averaged only six wins the last two years? Instead, they got younger and faster at those positions. Of course, it’s a little silly to call the very first game of the year a must-win, but considering how brutal their first-half schedule is, it would behoove the Bills to win this game to help them stay afloat until the easier second half. Denver is certainly beatable, with Jay Cutler still feeling his way through the NFL. Although it’s only September, Buffalo still isn’t the easiest place to win. Plus, you gotta love the Bills as a home dog (-3.5) (Balance = $1000)
