NHL Power Rankings for the All-Star Break

As we take a break for the All-Star game, the Predators find themselves on top of the NHL world, while the Sabres and Sharks also stay ahead of the Ducks. In the middle of the pack, the Senators are proving to everyone that a slow start can be overcome. At the bottom, the season is in the mail for the Kings and Flyers. Where did your team finish up the pre-All-Star break?

1 (2) 34-12-3
Top ten offense, top ten defense plus a red hot David Legwand means this team is going to be here for a while.
2 (1) 33-12-4
This team is going to have to deal with the deadline distractions, especially from the Flyers, who are interested in Chris Drury. Look for him to be traded as a sign that a deal wasn’t going to get done.
3 (4) 32-16-0 They are a top ten defense with a majority of their defenders out. Just wait until McLauren gets back.
4 (3) 30-12-8 Sure, they lead the Sharks by four in their division, but they have not weathered Chris Pronger being out as good as they had hoped. Good news might be on the way, Pronger’s expected to be back by mid-February.
5 (5) 30-14-5 Pavel Datsyuk is proving to be an off-ice distraction with his contract demands, the only question now is, how far behind Nashville will they be come playoff time.
6 (6) 29-14-5
Patrik Elias has found his game, which gives Marty some help on the other end of the ice.
7 (7) 29-18-1
Marty Turco is looking solid in the pipes after a slow start to 2007.
8 (9) 27-15-8 Marian Hossa is arguably the best forward in the east.
9 (8) 27-17-5 A name you will be hearing as a Calder finalist, Guillaume Latendresse, twenty-three points in his last thirty-five games. Not bad for a rookie.
10 (10) 28-20-2 The Sens will be the team to watch in the second half, thanks in part to Jason Spezza’s return next week.
11 (11) 27-19-2 One has to wonder how much longer Roberto Luongo can hold this team up.
12 (12) 26-17-4 Daymond Langkow has held the fort down while Jarome Iginla recovers from a sprained MCL.
13 (13) 25-19-6 Eric Staal and company are just cruising along.
14 (16) 26-22-2 Johan Holmqvist has stolen the number one job away from Marc Denis, maybe they will make the playoffs after all.
15 (14) 25-20-4 Niklas Backstrom gets the nod after Manny Fernandez sprained his knee.
16 (17) 24-20-3
Peter Budaj has taken over the number one spot, giving the Avs five million bucks on the bench.
17 (15) 23-21-4
Darius Kasparaitis was placed on waivers this week, something the Rangers should have done the second he signed three years ago.
18 (20) 21-19-4
If they were in the East, they would be tied for the last playoff spot. The problem is, they’re in the Northwest division, and find themselves in dead last. Now with Steve Staios out for a while, things are not looking so good for the Oil.
19 (19) 22-20-4 Phil Kessel should serve as an inspiration to us all. The kid has my full respect.
20 (22) 21-17-8 There has to be something said about the Pens’ heart. Their future is in doubt, but they are still contending for a playoff bid.
21 (21) 22-21-6 Kyle Wellwood goes down just as soon as everyone comes back. The Leafs are snake bit at this point.
22 (18) 19-17-7 Rick DiPietro is the only person worth talking about, and that isn’t much.
23 (23) 22-24-2 Mikael Tellqvist is now the number one in the desert. What does that mean for CuJo?
24 (24) 20-21-7 Jakub Klepis was recalled to the Caps. What does this mean? Nothing, I just wanted to use Jakub Klepis in a sentence.
25 (27) 19-21-8
Three wins this week for the Blues, two of them over the Sharks and Ducks.
26 (25) 18-22-10
Todd Bertuzzi may not return this season.
27 (29) 18-25-5 Nikolai Zherdev and Ken Hitchcock seem to be butting heads these days. Could he be on the block?
28 (26) 17-24-7
Martin Havlat now with thirty points this season.
29 (28) 16-28-6 Sign one that the stamp has been licked, Sean Burke is your new starting goalie.
30 (30) 11-31-5 The stamp is licked, and the season is in the mail.

Well… I’ve stood by and watched you rank the Bruins above the Pens all year. I know they’ve owned the Penguins the past 77,000 games it seems, but Pittsburgh is a better team than Boston and will make the playoffs way before Boston does. The  Penguins are currently in the 8th playoff slot in the East, so that makes them top 16 in my book. 20 is bottom third and they’re better than bottom third, despite how young they are. Sorry, but I’m overly sensitive about teams I spend a lot of money on.

The Formula/ Leafs Suggests that the Bruins are worse then the Pens…it’s a long formula, but I take into account points earned, points possible, goals for and against per game as well as goal differential. That’s what’s killing the B’s.

As far as the Leafs go, I call them snake bit beacuse it seems that they get a player back, then lose another one to injury. They haven’t been at 100% since October.

As far as the Pens go… What’s killing them is the fact they could have a lot more points then the Bruins right now. The GD is hugely on the Pens side (-34 for Boston +3 for Pittsburgh), but the OTL column has killed them in the rankings. I don’t belive they are that low, but that’s what the formula says.

They won’t stay behind the B’s…belive me, just give it a little time, it all works out in the end.
