2006 NFL Mock Draft (Philaphans.com)

From our partner website Philaphans.com and their board members:#1 HOU
#Pick: Reggie Bush, RB, USC
Comment: “Next Gale Sayers”

#2 NO
#Pick: D’Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
Comment: Ferguson joins Jamaal Brown on the O-line and give solid protection for Drew Brees

#3 TEN
#Pick: Matt Leinart, QB, USC
Comment: Norm Chow will get his man. Book it. McNair’s days are numbered and Leinart will be playing by mid year over Billy Volek.

#4 NYJ
#Pick: Mario Williams, DE, NC State
Comment: The Jets really liked Ferguson and Leinart, but with both of them taken they opted for the best defensive player in this year’s draft, Mario Williams. They hope he can fill the vacancy at DE left by the departure of John Abraham.

#5 GB
#Pick: Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon
Comment: In a real suprise the Packers select the best interior defensive linemen in the draft to anchor their line.

#6 SF
#Pick: Vernon Davis, TE/WR, Maryland
Comment: Hybrid beast will help Alex Smith grow properly.

#7 OAK
#Pick: Vince Young, QB, Texas
Comment: Here’s how it plays out. All the football people want Hawk, they think he is a stud. They beg and beg and beg, but Al Davis, being Al Davis, steps in overrides all his advice, and takes a QB despite already having two guys challenging for the starters job and one guy who they took in the third round last year.

#8 BUF
#Pick: Broderick Bunkley, DT, Florida State
Comment: The Bills are looking hard at DT, and possibly OT as well. The Bills liked Bunkley more than Ngata, so their top DT was on the board. They also liked Winston Justice, so it came down to these two. In the end, DT is the bigger need, so with all things being equal, Buffalo takes Bunkley and is very happy with their pick.

#9 DET
#Pick: Michael Huff, DB, Texas
Comment: “A safety that can hit like a linebacker and cover like a corner. We believe that Huff is the next Brian Dawkins!”

#10 ARI
#Pick: Winston Justice, OT, USC
Comment: Denny wants offense, and he has a lot of toys to play with, the only think that’s lacking is better offensive line play.

#11 STL
#Pick: A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State
Comment: Hawk will be the first step in rebuilding the 28th ranked defense in the NFL

#12 CLE
#Pick: Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt
Comment: Although Tye Hill and Kamerion Wimbley are tempting and Romeo is foaming at the mouth for defensive help – the Browns don’t see Charlie Frye as their franchise QB and they can’t pass up the opportunity to draft Cutler.

#13 BAL
#Pick: Ernie Sims, OLB, Florida State
Comment: This ended up being a tough spot for the Ravens. They really wanted to land one of Ngata, Bunkley, or Justice, and thought they would be able to. The question became whether or not to reach for an OT or DT, or go with the BPA.

#14 PHI
#Pick: Jimmy Williams, S/CB, Virginia Tech
Comment: In an absolute shocker – the Eagles pick the star defensive back from Va Tech. Originally projected as a top 10 pick this young corner will play as a nickel/dime corner as a rookie and be groomed to replace Dawkins once the Hall of Famer calls it a career. The Eagles could also move Sheldon Brown to safety and keep Williams at corner. Nice problem to have and reinforces the premium the Birds put on the defensive backfield.

#15 DEN
#Pick: Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State
Comment: Denver needs to replace Rod Smith and the current options aren’t to Shannahan’s liking. Holmes can hopefully shine in contrast to the underwhelming Ashlie Lelie.

#16 MIA
#Pick: Chad Jackson, WR, Florida
Comment: Wimbley and Whinter were very attractive to help replace Seau and a secendary in need of players, but with Culpepper coming in miami they want him to have weapons to throw to.

#17 MIN
#Pick: DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis
Comment: Williams and Chester Taylor, just signed as a FA this off-season, will combine to re-vamp the Vikes ruinning attack which has largely been poo since Robert Smith retired suddenly….Moore is running out of time to make a difference and Fason is a good 3rd option….

#18 DAL
#Pick: Chad Greenway, LB, Iowa
Comment: The Cowboys cannot pass up Chad Greenway to step in and be a vital part of the revamped LB corps.

#19 SD
#Pick: Jonathan Joseph, CB, South Carolina
Comment: San Diego needs help in the defensive backfield, particularly at CB. They were hoping for Jimmy Williams, and were surprised that the Eagles grabbed him. So they’ll take the next best CB on their board, Jonathan Joseph from South Carolina

#20 KC
#Pick: Tye Hill, CB, Clemson
Comment: The Chiefs couldn’t have gotten to the podium any quicker. There was a definite need at CB and in their opinion Hill was the best one avaliable even with Joseph on the board. This is also a very good value pick.

#21 NE
#Pick: Abdul Hodge, LB, Iowa
Comment: In a reach of epic proportions, not seen since Jon Harris was drafted by the Eagles out of Virginia – the Patriots look to sure up LB with an aging corps needing some youth.

#22 DEN
#Pick: Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn
Comment: Broncos put a major emphasis on protecting the QB and running the ball. McNeill is a great prospect at either RT or LT.

#23 TB
#Pick: Antonio Cromartie, CB, Florida State
Comment: Bucs look to continue defensive dominance under Kiffin and Gruden and add a nice homegrown corner to the mix.

#24 CIN
#Pick: Kamerion Wimbley, DE, Florida State
Comment: The Bengals will be thrilled to get Kamerion Wimbley from FLORIDA ST. at the #24 pick to upgrade the defense.

#25 NYG
#Pick: Bobby Carpenter, LB, Ohio State
Comment: With their problems at LB last year and Arrington’s status unknown, the Giants select Carpenter. Carpenter has seen his stock rise in recent weeks and is a very active OLB type. He was a key player in Ohio State’s tremendous defense in 2005.

#26 CHI
#Pick: Jason Allen, CB, Tenn.
Comment: Da Bears thought long & hard about taking the big TE out of Georgia,Leonard Pope but Lovie Smith knows the D secondary needs help. They take CBS Jason Allen from U.of Tennessee.

#27 CAR
#Pick: DeMeco Ryans, LB, Alabama
Comment: Losing Witherspoon and Short has opened some holes and they are hoping Ryans can step in immediately and perform especially with the unknown status of Dan Morgan’s injury too. They looked long and hard at Sinorice Moss WR since they do need a #2 WR and would like to find also a real pass catching TE for offensive balance, but they figure they can find them later on. After the pick, John Fox is overheard complaining that the refs shafted his team again by allowing the Giants to select Carpenter at #25. Jake Delhomme is quoted as saying “oh shucks” when told of the Panther’s selection.

#28 JAC
#Pick: Thomas Howard, LB, UTEP
Comment: With the loss of Adoleye to Dallas, the Jaguars are thin at OLB. Howard may be a reach at this spot given his production, but his raw skills might be as good as any LB’s in the draft, including Hawk and Greenway. They could have also gone with Leonard Pope here as they need a pass catching TE, but a guy like that might be found in later rounds, such as Fasano in the 2nd.Jax wanted DeMeco Ryans but some yahoo from Philly convinced the Panthers to take him at 27.

#29 NYJ
#Pick: Lendale White, RB, USC
Comment: Curtis Martin’s career is winding down and the Jets need a workhorse for the future. White will infuse the JETS sputtering offense with a new dimension but it will still lack that QB they wanted.

#30 IND
#Pick: Joseph Addai, RB, LSU
Comment: Indy targeted Addai from the start of the draft and would have picked him over Lendale White at this point even if the Jets had passed.

#31 SEA
#Pick: AShton Youboty, CB, OSU
Comment: Seattle has a true playmaker at one CB in Trufant but have a need for someone who can handle the opposite side of the field. Youboty, while not as polished as some of the other CBs in the upper rounds, is very athletic. Plus Seattle needs another CB because they are afraid of the triumvirate of Gaffney, Brown and Pinkston.

#32 PIT
#Pick: Laurence Maroney, TB, Minnesota
Comment: Pitt would love to have another WR but after Jackson and Holmes, there are few first round values left at wideout in this draft. Their other need at RB where future Hall of Famer, Jerome Bettis has retired. Maroney could be a steal at 32.

What the hell do we need with another S/CB? BP, I haven’t been following the draft discussions on philaphans.. who made this pick and what was their justification?

Jimmy Williams We put the EAGLES pick up to a poll with available talent at that spot.

It went down to the wire between Chad Greenway and Jimmy Williams.

I was pretty astonished that people loved Williams that much – it appears people think he’s a top 10 talent that must be selected if he drops that far – no matter what our need is.

Over 50+ votes in the poll…the reasoning is that Dawkins is moving on in age and we need to plan accordingly. Rod Hood could be gone too. This gives us tremendous flexibility.

But man…it doesn’t address our need for a stud LB, DT or OL.
