Be a Fan

This is an introductory column about myself, about being a fan and about the passion of sports:     Everyone is looking for an identity.  Life can be spent trying to find it.  After thinking of what to write about I thought, “I can’t write if the readers don’t know anything about me.” So I thought I’d take some time to introduce myself and what you can expect from me.  To put it simply … I’m a fan.
I’m a fan of sports.  You’d think that’s obvious, but it goes deeper than you’d think.  I’ll watch anything that ESPN broadcasts, whether it is four hours of football or four hours of a pool tricks tournament.
I’m a fan of New England sports.  Let’s get it out from the start.  Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins.  I follow them all.  People who know me think I do it a little too much, but I call it borderline obsessed.  That’s for another day though.
I’m a fan of movies.  Mostly sports ones.  I’ll make references too them constantly, and if you don’t get the reference, go out and watch the movie…cause it’s a good one.
I’m a fan of going to games.  There is nothing better than being in the crowd of your favorite team.  Nothing.  End of story.  Well, there will be a story, but again, another day.
I’m a fan of reading.  Sports columns that is (do we see a running theme yet?) …Bill Simmons, Peter King, Dan Shaughnessy, and Rick Riley.  These guys I read and learn from.
I’m a fan of poker.  Isn’t everybody these days? I usually play online, but I’ll emerge and play a few hands one night…and usually lose, but hey, doesn’t everybody?
I’m a fan of Football Sunday.  Which consists of going to my house in Culpeper, getting in front of the TV equipped with DirecTV NFL Ticket, and let the full day of football watching commence.
I’m a fan of March Madness.  Best championship in all of sports.  There is no other sporting event more exciting than college basketball.
I’m a fan of following baseball.  It’s probably the sport I follow the most.  With games every day and so much action.  If you think it’s boring on TV, go to a game and then tell me it’s boring.
I’m a fan of rivalries.  For all you Yankee fans out there … There are five year olds that are walking around never witnessed a New York Yankees championship.  How sad.
I’m a fan of all types of music.  It helps when your roommate last year listens to different stuff from your roommate this year.  That means I’ll listen to anything from Ben Folds to Beenie Man.
I’m a fan of playing sports…just about any sport, any day, any time.  Just play for fun and for the love of the game.  Except curling.
I’m a fan of readers.  This job just wouldn’t be as fun without you.  It wouldn’t be anything without you.  Not even a job.  It just wouldn’t be.
I’m a fan of emails.  I want your feedback.  Email me about anything, things going on in sports, things about what I write, ideas, or just everyday random things, you might not get a response.
I’m a fan of writing.  This is what I do and want to do for the rest of my life.  I have a lot of fun with it.
I’m a fan, and I hope you will be one too.

Nice to read you. A word of advice: Watch out for CleBrowns79. All he does is try to put down other writers. Don’t take him seriously. On another note, do you keep up with college football? You mentioned you read Bill Simmons. I believe he wrote, ” I refuse to watch a sport that considers Pete Carroll a genius”. Do you agree?

Ha Ha Dont listen to him, he thinks im an idiot becuase im a passionate browns and ohio state buckeys fan. But if you want to listen to him go ahead, i dont need friends on this site. good introduction tho

One question… why the hell did you write this? Why are you telling people about yourself? We don’t need to know about you, you should be writing about sports. “I’m a fan, and I hope you will be one too.” no we are all here becuase we really aren’t fans and aren’t passionate about sports. I hate to be this harsh on you on your first article but there are other ways to gain respect around here than writing about yourself.

feedback Couple notes:

This was, published in a newspaper, some school papers, some actual papers, this one happens to be in my school’s.  I wrote it because I believe you can’t just go rattling off opinionated without readers knowing who you are, you get no bond that way, so I wrote it for the newspaper audience as an introductory thing, and I just felt like putting all my stuff on here…

I follow college football but I agree and disagree with Simmons (my favorite writer by the way) Pete Carrol was just not an NFL Coach and he was horrible with the Patriots, but has proven himself as a college coach obviously, but I dont consider him a genius by any means…some coaches can’t coach at the pro level but are great at the college like Carrol and Rick Pitino….thanks for the feedback so quickly.

Article I see where you were going with it and I agreed with it.

I concur about March Madness.  To me that is my favorite sporting event and favorite month out of the year.

comment Hey, I really liked how he introduced himself…it doesn’t necessarily (and probably shouldn’t be) on the front page, but it’s a nice way to get to know the guy. I’m excited about reading your articles, you sound like you eat, sleep, and breathe sports. Good luck on this site, great intro, welcome aboard.

P.S. March Madness is the most exciting sports event ever created. (this from someone who isn’t even that big of a basketball fan)
