Here are the power rankings for another week in the MLB, as always any problems or comments you might have are welcome.

24-8 | It’s nice to see Podsednik on a team that can get him home, plus he’s on pace for over 80 steals. |
| 2(2) | ![]() |
21-10 | Everyone’s talking about the White Sox pitching, and for good reason, but Baltimore’s has been surprisingly good as well. Daniel Cabrera has improved steadily all year long. |
| 3(3) | ![]() |
20-11 | The closer by committee approach is obviously not as effective in terms of finishing games (they gave up five runs in the last two innings against the Padres), but it’s also hurting their middle relief (they did the same thing in the sixth and seventh innings the next day). |
| 4(5) | ![]() |
20-12 | The Braves are finally getting what they paid for out of Mike Hampton, but Smoltz and Hudson have been pretty mediocre. |
| 5(11) | ![]() |
20-13 | They still lead the league in runs, but the pitching is nowhere near last year’s. |
| 6(9) | ![]() |
19-12 | Two teams from the AL Central in the playoffs sure would be a nice change. |
| 7(6) | ![]() |
18-12 | It’s strange to think of someone who’s only 22 as finally having a breakout year, but it feels like forever since we were introduced to Miguel Cabrera in the 2003 playoffs. |
| 8(4) | ![]() |
19-12 | Scott Erickson and his 5.59 ERA has been maddening this year for Dodgers fans. |
| 9(7) | ![]() |
18-14 | It’s tough to win when three of your starters have ERA’s over 4, but the Angels have managed quite nicely to this point. |
| 10(10) | ![]() |
18-15 | Luis Gonzalez was always one of the guys brought up when people talked about steroids, but he’s performing better this year, when everyone’s supposed to be off the juice, than he did last year. |
| 11(8) | ![]() |
18-14 | It’s a shame the Nationals aren’t in an easier division. If they made the playoffs it would do wonders for baseball in D.C. |
| 12(15) | ![]() |
18-16 | It’s pretty amazing this team is above .500, only getting one run against the Reds bullpen in six innings is laughable. |
| 13(12) | ![]() |
18-16 | Toronto’s finally settling into mediocrity after two weeks of maddening inconsistency (5-5 in their last 10). |
| 14(20) | ![]() |
18-15 | It’s been a while since Cliff Floyd hit above .300, but he’s having a nice career resurgence this year. |
| 15(14) | ![]() |
17-16 | They’re second in the league in run production, but they can only get Kenny Rogers and his 1.79 ERA to 3-2. |
| 16(13) | ![]() |
16-15 | Tuesday’s game against the Pirates was a pitchers duel featuring Mark Redman and Brett Tomko. So yeah, their offense isn’t that great. |
| 17(16) | ![]() |
15-16 | It’s been a real long time since Ugeth Urbina’s Montrael days, something that’s painfully obvious every time he steps on the mound. |
| 18(17) | ![]() |
15-16 | Lyle Overbay is having a career year, and the Brewers are second in the NL Central despite being under .500. |
| 19(21) | ![]() |
15-18 | Ryan Howard is struggling greatly so far, hitting only .059 since getting called up. |
| 20(23) | ![]() |
14-19 | Cano has struggled, but they’re on a little winning streak of late to stay ahead of the Devil Rays. |
| 21(19) | ![]() |
14-19 | Huston Street is nasty, they should hurry up and trade Dotel. Of course, Dotel isn’t really helping his stock giving up walk-off homeruns to Kevin Millar. |
| 22(25) | ![]() |
13-18 | After a breakout year last season, Victor Martinez is really struggling. |
| 23(27) | ![]() |
13-18 | The Pirates were feeling saucy last week and decided to win a couple games, but unfortunately they probably used up all the runs they’re allowed to score for the next week too. |
| 24(18) | ![]() |
13-18 | Carlos Zambrano, meet Jason Schmidt. He’s you in a couple years if Dusty keeps letting you throw ridiculous amounts of pitches. |
| 25(22) | ![]() |
12-20 | I really doubt Roger Clemens is going to be traded to a contender later on this year; he has to be the only reason to go to an Astros game right now. |
| 26(24) | ![]() |
13-19 | The Mariners have won just two in their last ten games, dropping into the AL West cellar. |
| 27(26) | ![]() |
12-20 | I alluded to it before, but it bears repeating that the Reds bullpen has been disastrous so far. |
| 28(28) | ![]() |
12-21 | The D-Rays disappoint yet again, they just needed a couple more wins to at least pull even with the Yankees and cause them endless shame. |
| 29(30) | ![]() |
8-21 | ESPN had a headline the other day that described the Rockies bullpen’s ability to hold a lead as “shocking”. Yeah, that means they’re not good. |
| 30(29) | ![]() |
8-25 | Yikes, they’re already a quarter of the way to 100 losses. |

Rankings — I’ve reviewed quite a few of these power rankings but this particular rating system leaves me a little baffled. If a team is ranked by number of wins, then why have a rating system at all – one could just open the newspaper and check the standings. Under this system, one could assume that a major league team would much rather face the Mets or the Jays over the lowly Yanks. But when it all shakes out over the course of the year, who’s gonna be in contention at the end?
huh.. outside of Florida it seems you’re right.
