MLB Power Rankings April 26 2005

Here are the power rankings for a fairly uneventful third week in the MLB. Any thoughts are always welcome.

1(2) 16-4
The A’s offense hasn’t been special, but a 4-hit shutout by John “Judy” Garland is still pretty impressive. They haven’t lost a game since last week, but they’re going to need to pick up the pace offensively to continue winning a lot of games.
2(6) 12-5
I’m glad Mark Mulder got credit for the win after pitching 10 shutout innings. I honestly don’t understand how this lineup can be in the bottom third of the league in terms of run production, but they’re winning.
3(1) 13-6
Losing to the Rockies isn’t what the Dodgers should be doing right now. Dodgers fans have to be hoping Derek Lowe recovers from a mediocre last start.
4(4) 13-7
If I were Canada, I wouldn’t let Sidney Ponson in either. I heard David Wells ate five or six small, winter-weakened Canadians when the Red Sox went up there.
5(3) 11-8
I read an article at the beginning of the season that said Oliver Perez is the next great lefty pitcher. Whoever wrote that should reconsider, Dontrelle Willis has been much better so far this year.
6(8) 11-9
Bartolo Colon dropped out of school in 6th grade to throw rocks at coconuts to strengthen his arm. After giving up five earned runs (10 real runs) to the Yankees, he needs some rocks and coconuts as soon as possible.
7(11) 11-8
Joe Nathan has given up no runs and just four hits in eight appearances. Kyle Lohse, on the other hand, picked up right where he left off last year.
8(7) 12-9
They need a competent closer, as Kolb has been pretty pathetic so far. The Braves’ starters have been very good to this point, though, as expected.
9(9) 11-9
The David Wells injury hurts them not because he had been pitching so well, but because John Halama pitches so poorly.
10(13) 11-10
The Nationals managed to stay out of the cellar long enough to get their GM resigned for a short period of time, which is pretty nice of them.
11(15) 11-10
As long as Pedro can get through the first inning, he’s been okay so far. Despite hitting .250, Kaz Matsui is a virtual lock to get into the All-Star game now that fan voting has began.
12(10) 10-9
Another team lacking a closer, except their starting pitching has been nowhere near Atlanta’s so far. I really hope Prior doesn’t get injured again, its fun to watch him pitch.
13(26) 12-8
How this team is 12-8 is beyond me, along with how Troy Glaus has managed to stay healthy thus far.
14(14) 10-10
I’m afraid they won’t be able to compete for a while after the suspension of superstar Jamal Strong for steroids. I hope they scratch his two AB’s from the record books too. Seriously though, Jamie Moyer is pitching surprisingly well at age 42.
15(12) 9-12
What’s with Jim Thome? He should really try to hit more HR’s than Kenny Lofton (they’re tied with one).
16 (21) 9-11
The Yankees offense has been extremely inconsistent to this point. At least they’re still under .500, its hilarious to hear bandwagon Yankees fans panic.
17(5) 10-11
They’ve lost eight of their last 10 games, and proved even more reactive than Steinbrenner by firing their hitting coach Monday.
18(18) 10-11
Kenny Rogers has the best ERA out of their starters, but he’s winless. Ryan Drese is 2-1 with the worst. That’s what we call inconsistent offense.
19(19) 9-10
Ken Griffey Jr. hasn’t gotten hurt yet, but he’s not playing all that well either. Eric “Moonshot” Milton hasn’t helped either.
20(23) 9-11
Geoff Blum is averaging nearly a hit per game since he became a starter! Sadly, that may actually be exciting for the Padres at this point.
21(20) 8-11
The Astros have been extremely streaky so far. They’ve lost their last four, before that they won three straight and before that they lost three straight.
22(16) 8-11
Kirk Reuter is just not a good baseball player. Do the Giants really not have any prospects they can replace his ERA of over seven with?
23(17) 9-11
So let me get this straight. The A’s can afford Jason Kendall at $10.5 million, but not Tejada at $10.7? If I were an A’s fan, I’d feel extremely ripped off right about now. (As I typed this, Tejada homered to give the Orioles the lead in the eigth against the Red Sox.)
24(22) 9-11
I don’t understand how Cleveland’s offense can be so terrible. They don’t really have all that bad of a lineup, certainly not one that should be hitting at the same rate as the Pirates and A’s.
25(24) 8-10
Who had April 26th in the Magglio Ordonez injury pool? Also, Detroit may be the only place where games get snowed out in late April.
26(27) 8-12
I think the Devil Rays are on a mission to piss off every team in the AL East. First they bean a ton of Red Sox, and then they hit three Blue Jays with pitches. I am anxiously anticipating a Blue Jays – Devil Rays fight in the future, hopefully featuring Gustavo Chacin and Jorge “Handsome” Cantu.
27(25) 7-11
This team is in trouble with Ben Sheets out for the next month. Not that they already weren’t, but now they have to use a pitching machine or something as a fifth starter.
28(30) 6-12
Where did this Clint Barmes character come from? He’s hitting .438 and leading the MLB in batting average!
29(28) 5-12
At least Jose Lima is an awesome person, because he hasn’t been a great pitcher so far. Allowing just one run to the Twins is a start, even though he didn’t get the win.
30(29) 7-12
There was a paid attendance of 8,413 at the last Pirates game. I watched the game, and I would wager that only about 5,000 actually showed up. Just for that, they get to be last this week.
