2005 NFL MOCK DRAFT

Football fans everywhere are ready to celebrate Christmas in April. That’s right the 2005 NFL Draft is just 2 weeks away. This exciting weekend is one of the greatest of the year and one of the most exciting days in sports. Here is my initial 1st round mock.

1.San Francisco – Aaron Rodgers QB Cal. New 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan begins the rebuilding process and brings in local boy Aaron Rodgers to be the teams franchise QB. The 49ers have some young WR’s in Brandon Lloyd and last years 1st rounder Rashaun Woods. Rodgers will build some chemistry between the three.

2. Miami – Ronnie Brown RB Auburn. After Ricky Williams retired the Dolphins were left with virtually nothing on offense, he was what the offense was built around, so bringing in another talented RB who can run, catch, and block is a good way to start rebuilding that struggling offense.

3. Cleveland – Antrel Rolle CB Miami. Now this might seem a bit high for Rolle and Cleveland may even be able to trade down to get him, but since there have been no official trades yet I’ll put him here. The Browns went out and addressed their struggling offense by bringing in 2 veteran Guards, a veteran QB (Dilfer), and a RB who went for over 1,200 yards last season in Reuben Droughns. With Kellen Winslow coming off of injury the Browns are okay on offense for now, they need to improve a struggling defense and Rolle, being the best defensive prospect in the draft, is a good place to start. They will have two very good young corners and new HC Romeo Crennel can build his defense around them.

4. Chicago – Cedric Benson RB Texas. With recent signing Muhsin Muhammad from free-agency and the comeback of Rex Grossman this year the Bears passing game should improve heavily. What they still lack however is a running game. And with those windy days come wintertime in Chicago they are not going to want to be passing the ball, so an effective RB is needed. Benson can come in right away and carry the load for this struggling offense.

5. Tampa Bay – Cadillac Williams RB Auburn. Jon Gruden needs more young offensive playmakers on this team and by adding WR Michael Clayton last year he’s starting to do that. WR’s Galloway and Clayton are good for now, they also lack a true RB and Gruden is supposed to be in love with Williams having coached him in the senior bowl.

6. Tennessee – Mike Williams WR USC. New Titan OC Norm Chow from USC gets his old playmaker back in Williams. Tennessee who recently had to cut WR Derrick Mason now adds another WR to improve the offense. Andre Dyson, CB, who most thought would sign elsewhere now looks to be re-signing with the Titans, which could heavily effect who they take here.

7. Minnesota – Braylon Edwards WR Michigan. After adding many key defensive players through Free Agency, Minnesota may just be one player away from having a complete team and Edwards is a true no. 1 WR. After losing Moss they gain a young playmaker in Edwards.

8. Arizona – Alex Smith QB Utah. Many people think this may be too low for him but if you ask many experts if Smith or Rodgers isn’t picked in the top three picks then they will slide down quite a bit and I don’t think they get past here. Arizona is close to completing a trade for RB Travis Henry so their RB need isn’t as great anymore. Kurt Warner and Josh McCown aren’t the long-term answers so bringing in Smith to progress under Warner would be a great idea.

9. Washington – Pac-Man Jones CB West VA. After losing Fred Smoot in FA the Redskins bring in speedy Jones who will add to one of the leagues top Defenses.

10. Detroit – Derrick Johnson LB Texas. Detroit prances on Johnson; they feel blessed to have him fall on them. Adding Johnson would give Detroit one of the best and young LB corps in the NFL. With Lehman, Bailey, and Johnson these LB’s should be impressive for years to come.

11. Dallas – Shawne Merriman DE/LB Maryland. Dallas who would like to trade down, but I’ll keep them here for now, and they take this “tweener” from Maryland. Dallas is rumored to be switching to the 3-4 defense needs a big 270 guy like Merriman to be in the OLB pass rusher type for them. Perfect fit.

12. San Diego – Troy Williamson WR South Carolina. San Diego, just 1 piece missing from their high-powered offense and that is a WR. Williamson is a speed demon and considered the best deep threat in this draft. Will team up with LT, Gates, and Brees to form one of the most dynamic and youngest offenses in the league.

13. Houston – Alex Barron OT Florida St. No brainer here, David Carr can’t take many more hits, Barron comes in to protect him. Carr has taken more sacks the past couple years than anyone else in the league.

14. Carolina – Jammal Brown OT Oklahoma. Panthers bring in Brown to bolster up that OL and make it look pretty impressive with Gross and Wahle being added from FA.

15. Kansas City – David Pollack DE/LB The Chiefs have been pathetic the past couple years on defense but bringing in guys like Kendrell Bell and rumored to be close to trading for CB Patrick Surtain should help. Pollack never quits and should give them another young player to help out.

16. New Orleans – Thomas Davis OLB/S The Saints, who had DJ Williams sitting in their laps last year were ready to pick him, just to see Denver trade up right before them and steal him. They grab LB here instead in Davis.

17. Cincinnati – Travis Johnson DT Florida St The Bengals have been one of the leagues worst teams defending the run. Johnson will be a force inside for them for years to come.

18. Minnesota – Marcus Spears DE LSU Surprised to see him fall this far but the Vikings take him and don’t look back. He will team up with last year’s 1st rounder Kenechi Udeze as started DE’s. They also join all pro DT’s Kevin and Pat Williams.

19. St. Louis – Carlos Rogers CB Auburn. Rogers’s strengthens up a pathetic Rams defense who have already brought in solid LB’s in Chris Claiborne and Dexter Coakley.

20. Dallas – Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma. The Boys bring in a stud WR because virtually they have none. Keyshawn is holding out, Quincy Morgan is unreliable. Clayton adds with youngster Julius Jones to hopefully give their offense some spark.

21. Jacksonville – Khalif Barnes OT Washington. Jags get a great OT to protect Leftwich for years to come. The Jags addressed their biggest need at DE by bringing in Reggie Hayward from Denver.

22. Baltimore – Roddy White WR UAB. The Ravens WR’s were horrible last year however they brought in Derrick Mason via FA which will vastly improve them but they still need young talent and White is a speedster that can help them.

23. Seattle – Dan Cody DE/LB Oklahoma. Seattle lost starters Simmons and Huff this off-season and Cody is a bigger guy who played DE in college but can make the switch to LB, either way he helps improve this Seahawks Defense.

24. Green Bay – Charlie Frye QB Akron. Brett Favre considered retirement this off-season so you know he’s going to be gone sometime soon. The Packers have no one to replace him if he does go or gets hurt this year they will need to find a replacement and Frye will be a perfect prospect to come in and learn under the great one.

25. Denver – Brodney Pool S Oklahoma. The Broncos lost Kennoy Kennedy and Kelly Herndon both starters in their secondary so bringing another young guy to team up with John Lynch and Champ Bailey. This will help thier defense that struggled late last year and especially in their playoff loss to the Colts.

26. New York Jets – Heath Miller TE Virginia. Chad Pennington has been preaching to the Jets he wants a TE. And with TE’s becoming much more important in teams offenses he’s right. Miller, the best TE in the draft will improve the Jets passing game immediately and also is a great blocker for Curtin Martin.

27. Atlanta – Justin Miller CB Clemson. Miller will team up with last year’s first rounder DeAngelo Hall to give Atlanta two very good young CB’s. Jason Webster, Atlanta current #2 CB is very injury prone and missed a lot of games last year. Atlanta signed LB’s Ed Hartwell and Ike Reese in the off-season to improve their Linebacking core. Now they bring in a young CB to add to that much improved defense.

28. San Diego – DeMarcus Ware DE/OLB Troy St. Another “tweener” and believed to be one of the top pass rushers in the draft. With San Diego running the 3-4 defense Ware is a perfect fit for the OLB pass-rushing type.

29. Indianapolis – Fabian Washington CB Nebraska. The Colts defense is what’s been holding this team back from making it to the Super Bowl. The secondary is the worst out of all their defensive units, they have young safeties so bringing in Washington will give them a solid foundation of young DB’s to help Dungy with his struggling D. Washington ran his 40 in under 4.3 at the combine so he will be able to keep up with anyone in the league.

30. Pittsburgh – Matt Jones WR Arkansas. Jones will be able to replace Plaxico Burress who Roethlisburger loved throwing jump balls up to. Jones is 6’6 and will be able to out jump most DB’s in this league.

31. Philadelphia – Shaun Cody DT USC. With Corey Simon possibly to be traded, the Eagles need to gain some depth on the DL. They already lost starter DE Burgess to the Raiders and Simon may be gone by next year. Bringing Cody will be a plus due to his ability to play both DT and DE.

32. New England – Channing Crowder LB Florida . One of the top ILB’s in the draft, Crowder will join a nasty group of LB’s in New England. With Tedy Bruschi possibly sitting out next year the Patriots need to get some depth and youth at the LB position. Ted Johnson is old and guys like Larry Izzo are best suited for special teams. Crowder is young and talented but very raw. However with great coaches in New England he’ll be able to succeed.

Great Job I liked all you picks, they were all logical and all made sense for each team. This was one of the better drafts ive seen lately. but you did have a “v” infront of the paragraph about your #2 pic, but that really didnt matter

I like it Two things I disagree with though.  Chicago doesn’t need a RB, Thomas Jones was one of the few bright spots for them before he got hurt.  Also, Minnesota needs a LB badly, and doesn’t really need a D-lineman at all.  I can’t see them passing up Crowder if he’s there.

I love your pick for the Steelers though.  Jones is exactly what we need, and with Hines and Randle El there to tutor him I see no reason why he can’t be successful.

IanB…. Your right the Vikings may be looking at LB with that 2nd pick but I dont think any of the LB’s besides Johnson, Merriman, and Ware would warrant that pick , Crowder has a lot of durability and character questions while the DL in that part of the draft are very good value.

The Bears do need a running back… last season RB Thomas Jones didn’t do much for us but, if Ronnie Brown is not availible at number 4 then they will take a WR not Cedric Benson. In Chicago it is a good plan to have 2 great running backs because of the very low climate in the wintertime, like how they did in the 80’s and early 90’s
