1(2) 41-12
The Suns keep scoring and keep winning. Adding Walter McCarty should improve their bench allowing more starters to rest. The Suns will be a serious threat if they have fresh legs come playoff time.
2(3) 35-14
After getting worked over by the Spurs 2 weeks ago, the Sonics started February with 5 straight wins. That includes 2 wins vs. the Kings and 1 win over the Suns. Seattle’s streak ended with a loss to Dallas over the weekend, but looking at their next 5 games, I expect them to start another one real soon. 4 of the 5 teams they’ll play are below .500.
3(4) 39-14
Miami showed a lot of people what they can do against the best of the Western Conference. They got a big win over the Spurs on Sunday, and as usual Dwayne Wade showed why he is the MVP of that team.
4(1) 40-12
An injury to Tim Duncan caused a small drop in the rankings this week. It also caused an increase in scoring from Tony Parker. Parker hit for at least 20 points in the Spurs last five games.
5(6) 33-16
The Mavs started their 5 game road trip with wins in Sacramento and Seattle. Next they’ve got a warm-up game against the Warriors before heading to Phoenix. Hell, if they can beat the Warriors, then the road trip is already successful.
6(8) 31-21
The Rockets are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season. It’s at 7 games but it’s a little misleading. The best team, record wise, during this streak is the 24-23 Chicago Bulls. With their next 3 games being Washington, Seattle, and San Antonio, I expect the streak to end.
7(5) 33-18
All the little nagging injuries caught up to the Kings as they had their 1st 4 game losing streak of the season. They are going to need everybody healthy and fast, because they’ll play their next 8 of 9 on the road.
8(7) 30-22
Without a healthy Pau Gasol, the Grizzlies are a lowly 7th seed in the conference. A healthy Gasol, gives Memphis a chance to catch Dallas and be a 4th seed.
9(10) 31-19
By handing out 3 beat downs by an average of 22 points, the Pistons look to be rounding into shape, again. I wanna question their 12-12 road record. It was only last week when they went into New Jersey and got run out. If they could put up a strong showing in Philly this week, then I might be a little more convinced.
10(9) 29-20
I know I’ve been a big Lebron supporter, but the play of Ilgauskas will determine how well the Cavs do. He has to be top 3 in centers in the Eastern conference.
11(11) 30-12
Wizards showed why they have that bad road record(10-14). They’ve lost 4 straight road games and have given up an average of 104 ppg. That’s unacceptable if they wanna do any damage in the playoffs.
12(12) 24-23
Even after that big winning streak the Bulls haven’t let down yet and remaining around .500. Chicago fans gotta be proud of that.
13(13) 27-24
Looks like Magic are coming back down to earth. 5-5 their last 10 and they only have 2 wins in their last 6. Those wins were against the Hawks and the Hornets. Magic might be slipping.
14(16) 26-26
With the trading deadline approaching, I would expect the Celtics to make a deal. The right move could push this team above the rest of the Atlantic bums.
15(18) 26-26
AI is happy in Philly, no matter what Stephen A dreams
up in his little delusional world to sell newspapers and get more
airtime on ESPN. He just needs some help to win – he can’t drop 60 every night.
16(17) 22-29
I really like the hustle and great play from Vince Carter. They might actually give it a run. By picking up Clifford Robinson, they definitely wanna try. But, I don’t think Robinson will help much.
17(14) 23-28
The Nuggets were turning a corner and ran into a brick wall. Injuries to front court players, Marcus Camby and Nene, will place the load on K-Mart. He isn’t talented enough to hold the fort down by himself for very long.
18(15) 25-24
With the top 7 spots looking locked up, the Lakers are going to be in a 2nd half brawl for the 8 seed with Minnesota and Denver. They have to start now. Their next 3 games are against teams .500 and below.
19(21) 24-26
Its too bad Reggie won’t get another chance at a ring. His farewell campaign will always be remembered as the “year that could’ve been”. Without Ron Artest they have no chance.
20(24) 20-29
Milwaukee’s been playing .500 ball lately, but it wont be enough this year. They’ll have to play a lot better than that because they are in the toughest division in the East.
21(19) 25-27
The T’Wolves needed to take advantage of the Kobe-less Lakers and move back into the playoff race. But all they did was lose as many games as anybody else in the league over their last 10. Flip was the scapegoat, so he was fired, but if Sprewell and Cassell didn’t have guaranteed contracts, they’d be fired too.
22(23) 21-31
The Raptors love Toronto. It may sound crazy but they are only 5 games back from the division lead. If their road winning percentage was just a lowly 40% they’d be in the lead. Too bad its 16% at 4-21. Seems young teams don’t do the job on the road.
23(20) 23-28
The road trip has been murderous. At least we’ve been softened up by many years of failing. We are all numb to the pain of the Clips losing streaks. I guarantee any other team in the middle of a playoff race that suffers a 5 games skid, would be looking to fire their coach. Ie, Minnesota Timberwolves.
24(22) 21-29
To the Blazers: You serve as a tribute to all the kids out there who are playing on below average youth and high school teams across the country. Those same teams are finishing the season knowing that they won’t earn anything but a certificate of participation. Hold your head high Portland. You’re a role model.
25(25) 20-32
Statistically speaking, Stephon Marbury is having a great year. 21 points and 8 assists per game. But it’s not translating into wins at all. I mean seriously, how many times have you seen Steph in the playoffs? You can count them on one hand. The Knicks won’t be anything better than bad as long as he is running the show.
26(26) 17-34
Remember when Utah was 6-1 and looking like a possible playoff team? Kirilenko is back and averaging nearly 20 per game for this month. But they are just too far back to think about a run. Bright side? Next season doesn’t look this bad.
27(27) 14-37
I really like the Clifford Robinson deal. They dumped a player who is a not a factor in their future, and picked up 2nd rounders to add to their young team.
28(30) 11-41
With Baron Davis returning, the Hornets shouldn’t drop any lower than this spot right here. Notice the key word, shouldn’t. Why did Byron take this job again?
29(29) 10-39
Let’s hope rookie Josh Smith’s ankle holds up. This is a guy I am really looking forward to seeing in Rookie game.
30(28) 10-39
They might on a losing streak, but these guys continue to fight. Here’s proof for you gamblers out there. In every game this month they have been underdogs, but only the Spurs have covered the spread. Sounds like easy money to me.
