Defending Ricky Williams

So Run Ricky Run… straight into retirement after 5 years. He says he just wants to be free and happy. A lot of people are muttering “jackasss!”, but in my humble opinion, he is making a great decision. There are only two types of people who can be mad at Ricky Williams for deciding to retire a week before training camp, the Miami Dolphins organization, including their fans, and any Fantasy Football owners who have already completed their draft. The rest are just jealous. I know playing professional football is the dream of millions. Hell, once in a while, I still daydream about being the fastest cornerback in league, nevermind that I’m slower than a Merchant Ivory film festival. But imagine you’re Ricky Williams and you love the ganj. This isn’t the NBA, the NFL will actually make you stop smoking it. So what do you do if you’re 27 and you have millions of dollars? You travel the world and smoke weed. I know a lot of people with a lot less money doing the same thing.

Pete Prisco wrote an article basically calling Ricky a fool. Pete, let me reiterate something to you, Ricky Williams has millions of dollars! I like Prisco. I don’t think he’s one of those assclown journalists out there, but on this, he’s wrong. Prisco writes, “we’re all told what we can and can’t do. It’s called laws and bosses and wives and parents.” Wait a minute. Pete, the only thing on that list that you have to follow are the laws. Ricky Williams is a grown man, he doesn’t have to listen to his parents anymore. Also, bosses and wives are easy to get rid of, especially if you have lots of money. Perhaps, Prisco, you’re just jealous because Ricky told his bosses to shove it and you can’t do the same. (Or perhaps that’s me talking… but I digress.) That leaves the problem of the sticky being illegal. That’s what the traveling is for! Ricky can spend months in Amsterdam partaking of his favorite brownies and no one is going to arrest him for it. Plus, who gets arrested for just smoking weed anymore? If they did, Dr. Dre and Cypress Hill would never be able to tour. Hell, on his album liner, Dre is opening up a big bag of chronic. I didn’t see that being submitted as evidence in a drug trial of any sort.

Prisco goes on to talk about how selfish Ricky Williams is for leaving the Dolphins in a lurch. Pete, you’re the one smoking the green now. How quickly would Miami cut his ass if he failed to produce or got hurt towards the end of his contract? There is no loyalty in the NFL because there are no guaranteed contracts. Ricky Williams doesn’t owe the Dolphins a damn thing. What, he should’ve told them a week earlier so they could get Eddie George? Right, Eddie George is going to solve the Dolphins RB problem.

So let’s recap here. Ricky Williams is in the prime of his life. He is retiring at 27 with millions of dollars. And he’s going to travel the world and smoke weed. If he were a musician or a software guru, he’d be widely applauded. But since he’s a football player, he’s a weirdo. Nope, Pete, you got it all wrong. He’s got “F U” money and he’s saying to the NFL, F… U. 99% of the world would love to be him (up from 50% when he was just a football player). Bravo, Ricky, you’re living the dream.

I can’t wait for the spate of articles from Miami fans crying about how much Ricky screwed them. Well, I’m not sure if this makes you feel any better but you guys had no chance this year anyway. You were going to dethrone the Patriots and even beat the improved Jets with Jay Fiedler at QB? Please.

Ricky I couldn’t care less what he does or why. I think he’s scum for the dope, and a pathetic dumbass for so desperately needing to get stoned that he can’t put it aside till his career is over. He’s also a jerk for waiting so long into the offseason to make this choice and screwing the team as far as free agency and the draft go.

Like you said, he’s already sick rich. So why should how many MORE millions he can make even factor into this?

I’ve never thought of him as an elite back and his loss is pretty minor. It isn’t even especially important to the Dolphins, since I already expected them to finish with something around the 20th worst record in the league. So now they drop, what, another five spots? So what? Like they’d have made the playoffs anyway.

Ok, he’s gone. Big deal.

Ricky……. As a lifelong Dolphin fan I hate to admit it but I think your right…..Rickys just doing what we all say we would..play for a few years, make a few million, and retire before the body goes to pieces.. although it would have been nice to know before the draft……..
                    Bye Ricky we`ll miss you
                     and smoke one for me…

I forgot about the wear and tear factor That’s one point I forgot to address.  Maybe he just sees the old guys limping around with knees that have no cartilage left.  Bone on bone is no fun.  So instead of making 10 more million (netting only 3 or 4 after taxes, fees, agents, etc), he’s happy with the money he has and future health.

Ricky’s world I have to agree with you on the Ricky situation.  No way would I leave the NFL and millions of green (dollars that is) behind me.  But I’m not Ricky and apparently his heart was not in it.  If an NFL player is not %100 dedicated to the game and his team, the only choice he has is to step aside.  Ricky knew this was the case and just walked away.   Members of the Dolphins organization and Fins fans have every right to be angry with Ricky, but the rest of us should just respect his decision whether we agree or not.  It is his life and not ours.
