Week 15 NFL Picks

Well, after touting my personal picks last week, I did the worst out of the group goign 11-5. Good thing the others were there to pick up the slack. Overall, the Sportscolumn experts went 3 out of 4 on picks and on the locks. Still doing pretty well on the season.

Here we go with the Week 15 Picks. If you want to see how well the experts here at SC stack up against the competition, check out this excel file.

John Doe

They are anonymous.  Their faces are unfamiliar.  Their teams are not national powerhouses.  No major bowl games, no major fan fare.  Their names might as well be John Doe.  One of them is Mean and Green.  Another is a Blazer, and the third is simply a Falcon.  Regrettably, Jamario Thomas, Roddy White, and Omar Jacobs are the three best college football players you have never seen play.

Bears have A Reason to Play

After their loss to the Jaguars, all playoff hopes can be put to rest. But, I believe there’s something to play for and the Bears and Lovie Smith should focus on these three things: (a) finishing the season with some momentum for next year, (b) taking a look at all players in game situations, and (c) putting the whole playbook in to see which plays their players can execute and which plays require different players.

Boycott Madden 2006 Petition

Forget the war in Iraq. Forget global warming. I finally found something worth creating a petition for. On Monday December 13th, EA Sports announced that they signed an exclusive 5 year licensing agreement with the NFL and the Players Union. Essentially, what this does is prevent anyone else from creating any football games except for EA. Say good bye to competition.

Week 14 NFL Power Rankings

It’s getting harder and harder to do the Power Rankings every week for the bottom of the barrel. Everyone is just interested in the Top 10 and who will make the playoffs. I considered limiting the list but I get too much joy out of ripping on the crappy teams of the league. Not much change at the top this week but nice movement in the middle as mediocre teams jostle for playoff positioning.

Trojan Wars: The Best Player Won’t Win the Heisman

By Sean Quinn

“Citizen Kane” was snubbed an Oscar back in 1941.  It lost to “How Green Was My Valley.”  Marshall Faulk was snubbed the Heisman Trophy in 1992.  He lost to Gino Toretta.  Orson Welles’ classic film went on to be called the greatest film of all time by the American Film Institute.  Marshall Faulk will probably be in the Hall of Fame someday.  I was snubbed, regrettably yet again, by the folks at People Magazine and their list of the “50 Most Beautiful People.”  All I’m shooting for is to be remembered for something, but that is neither here nor there.  Reggie Bush will probably be snubbed the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, perhaps to his teammate Matt Leinart.  Leinart will no doubt have a better career than Toretta did in the NFL.  Heck, Ryan Leaf had a more productive stint in the NFL than did Toretta.  And by no means is anyone sculpting a bronze bust in Canton for the sophomore USC running back just yet, but if the Heisman Trophy is designated for the best player in college football, Leinart’s backfield buddy should be holding some type of bronze hardware Saturday night.

Charlie Weis: Finally- Something to Write About

By Ryan McGowan

God bless Notre Dame.

You’d think with my last name that I’d be a bigger Fighting Irish fan, but I’m not.  I’m not a Notre Dame hater, just more of a Notre Dame agnostic; I am basically indifferent to the institution.  (As opposed to a Notre Dame atheist, who believes that Notre Dame doesn’t exist.)  But God bless them today.  I love Notre Dame.

Future Tar Heel excited about opportunity

Future Heel excited about opportunity

By JOHN HOLT

CHAPEL HILL — This summer was an adventure for Marcus Ginyard. Ginyard, a senior at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va., had a jam-packed schedule. All the better to prepare him for his promise to be a basketball player at the University of North Carolina.
