The New Quarterback Rating System

If there is any fan out there who understands the NFL’s quarterback efficiency rating they should probably make them Commissioner. The complex, arcane, over-computerized method used to rate quarterbacks is so flawed and confusing that it makes the BCS look like kindergarten arithmetic. I’m just a fan, I shouldn’t need a PhD in mathematics to determine if my favorite quarterback is statistically efficient.

There needs to be an easily calculable, fair, yet comprehensive system for fans, and announcers, to be able to gauge the effectiveness of quarterbacks. The QB rating system could be as fun and understandable as calculating your favorite baseball player’s batting average, or on base percentage. But until now, it hasn’t been.

Right Time vs. Rice Time

Another piece of my childhood left the game of football this week- Jerry Rice. In his own time and on his terms, Rice decided that it was time to call it a career…at least for now. If you’re like me, just the name Jerry Rice brings back a flood of memories. I’m not just talking about memories of touchdown passes and crisp route running, I’m talking about memories of an era. For twenty to thirty-something’s, the career of Jerry Rice has last throughout our childhood, teen years, and into adulthood.

The Genius

He has been to 2 Super Bowls. He is hailed as an offensive genius. His team is a perennial playoff contender. He is also one of the worst coaches in the NFL. A contradiction? Not when its Mike Martz.

Now Ask Yourself A Question

If you’re a football fan right about now, you’ve probably grown so delirious waiting for the NFL to come back you’ve convinced yourself that your team has a shot.  Never mind all those faults you couldn’t help but notice as last season wore on; those have slowly been pushed out the back of your head, replaced with reasons why your team has “it” this year.  Well, chances are, your team doesn’t have “it”.  In fact, your team has only a 1-in-32 shot of having “it”, and that’s if you give the Niners the same odds as the Patriots.

Taking the reigns

“All great things come to an end,” however clichéd and unoriginal it may sound, it’s true. Even in baseball: players age, teams rebuild–it’s an inevitable cycle.

While high-market clubs like the Yankees and Red Sox may have more flare and sizzle than lowlier, modest clubs like the A’s, it’s teams like the A’s who avoid lengthy, piteous rebuilding stages because they consistently maintain a nucleus of young talent and don’t spend frivolous dollars on over-the-hill, washed up veterans.

It comes down to promoting from within–maintaining a zealous, fervent farm system of young guys who are committed to winning. The teams that do that will never be out of contention.

The following clubs will be talked about long after the Yankees and Red Sox recede into mediocrity.
